gabriel comments on Hotels in Cali

Agree that the inter is the best and safest in cali...last year when I stayed with my wife, I saw alot of security in the hotel, in its sorroundings and also in the general area near the river, alot of police or military dress in plane clothes.

Also the Dann is in the same area as the inter, less than a couple of minutes away walking "about a block or two away", they do bomb checks, a ton of security, really can't go wrong with either.

One question that I have is, has anyone stayed at the royal pacific? just wondering how does it compare.

gabriel comments on Is Cali dangerous???

Wife just returned from Cali, got mugged in el centro by two guys (rateros) one bumped her....the other one came from the other side and grab her cell, and purse. I told my wife not to take chances, not to go unacompanied especially to el centro, to many unemployed guys hanging around.

I myself haven't had any problems in colombia, I don't wear my expensive watch, flashy clothes, pull out big bills....only thing that's happened to me in colombia is that un ratero gave me counterfit money for U.S. dollars "black market", made me furious...."mi suegro" took that counterfit money and came back with good money don't know what he did but oh well in colombia you don't ask to many question.

Cali to me is still paradise "adoro a mis caleñas"

gabriel comments on New coca fumigation program drives poor Colombians off lands

My source for the article was the panamanews, I guess is a link to the narconews. Pretty far out stuff in that page, it makes you think about the war on drug in a completely different light.

I wonder how succesful aerial fumigation has been in el departamento de putumayo, and nariño. Have they made any dent on the cultivation and harvesting of coca leafs....Its their any aerial fumigation in neighbouring countries of Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia big coca producer, just wondering?

Embera & Wounaan indians Lionheart,

The boroquera (blowgun) are use in the darien jungles by this indians, they use the poisonous frogs and the bullet ants to coat the darts. This indians are more similar to the amazon indians than the rest of the indians in Panama. A quote from lonely planet, "the Embera and Wounaan are about the toughest people you'll ever meet, yet their smiles could melt silver".

gabriel comments on New coca fumigation program drives poor Colombians off lands

Choco's geographical location is much more important to this corp. than its resources. The department borders Panama, and is being eyed by developers as the site to build a massive new electrical grid that would carry electricity from dams throughout Colombia to central america and eventually the U.S. Also there a plan to build a gas pipeland to Panama.

Hollywood, I read that article in a panamanian newspaper, your right bout the zillions of acres out there, but I think that most of the coca grower are families with small plots all over the choco. Its dificult at times just to target this small grower without causing damage to the other crops and vegetations in the area.

Lionheart When the U.S. miltary was still in Panama "especial forces" us to train with does indian in Darien, best jungle training in the world. If anybody knew how to survive in jungle it was does bastards....the mess up thing is that they trusted the American but never the local panamanians.

gabriel comments on My trip to Cali.

Fzrdan, I'm glad you enjoyed your trip to Cali, the last time I was in Cali my wife and I stayed at this aparthotel call rayda...right across the street from the Inter's casino. We use to go walking in san antonio almost every day, use to attend mass a couple of days a week up at the church.

I've heard the same thing about Yumbo, very polluted the industrial sector of cali. Also I had a chance to travel too my wife's grandparents house in San Antonio de los caballero, small little town near La Florida, the big industry in this area are (los cañaverales) is anybody familiar with this area of el valle, just curious!!

Well Joe T. if you do decide to go into the Darien make shore that you go in the dry season, from january to april, because if you don't your chance of making it are slim.

Another heads up, Its illegal to be in that sector of panama without permission from la guardia nacional. They have thousands of police troop patroling that area, so if they catch you they will arrest you....but thats the least of your worries.

No doubt in can be done, hell I'm quit sure that many people have played russian roulette, swam with white shark etc.... and live to tell about it.

FRLFT I know what you mean, Chavez was democratically elected by the people, enough said. Wether you like what his doing for his country or not really doesn't matter, I remenber how venezuela was before Chavez. A country with so much resources but so little to show for it, but then again isn't how it is all over latin america.

Wondering Just wondering whats the percentage of business owners that pay...I would think that most don't. Never been in that situation myself but I wouln't pay, I would rather shut down and move on than pay, easier said than done I know, but thats my personal opinion.

gabriel comments on Is buenaventura, Colombia a good place to live or visit?

Buenaventura..... Buenaventura seems to be quiet frankly just like a town we have in Panama "Colon", shit load of money goes throught that town "BILLIONS" from the free zone and the megaports but the people nor the city see much of the money, most business owners live in panama city.

Desi, your right about the people the nicest and proudest bunch of people I've met in colombia. The road that you take to go too calima is the same road that takes you into Buenaventura?

gabriel comments on Ex-Miami's Colombian's Story- Criminals turn to Extortion in Bogota(2-6-05)

Good story miami...... Saw this article the other day it really suprised me, don't know how true it is:

Sad thing is that I know several guys in Cali that have been in the same situation. One of my wifes cousin, he was in the transportation business, had 5 buses..... Finally they killed him because he wouln't pay. His brother owns a gas station, right at this moment his having the same problems, people calling him and several guys showing up in his place off business. It pisses me off because he such a nice guy, everytime I'm in cali I get treated like a king at his house.

Multiplaza Yeh I've heard about the new mall in punta pacifica multiplaza, I've never been there. hopefully my next trip to panama, I have been to Multicentro on avenida balboa, big mall has a huge casino inside. How does multiplaza compare to multicentro? just wondering because they seem to cater to the same clientele, pretty much in the same area of the city.

When I finally relocate to panama, I want to purchase a nice boat, hopefully I can find one for a nice price. My only concern is the lack of affordable marinas, I wonder why marinas are so expensive on the pacific side?

gabriel comments on panama

Viewpoint If i'm not mistaken, I think that they are build a johns hopkins hospital in punta pacifica. I don't know what type of insurance you're going to need to go there. one thing that I do know is that insurance in panama compared to the U.S. is dirt cheat even if your hospital is paitilla. Also most doctors in panama get there formal training in the U.S. or in europe.

gabriel comments on panama

maribeth My wife es una caleña and she loves panama, I'm a panamanian and I love colombia go figure. Panama offers many opportunities if you're educated especially in the banking sector and in the bilingual field.

For me the best way to live in panama is, if you can have a source of income from a business or some investments, even better if is income from outside the country because is not taxed. Thats what my wife and I are working on as we speak, relocating to Panama. Wages in panama are not the best like most latin countries, but is not impossible to find a job.

My wife and I just bought some land that we're going to built on next year. Beatiful property about an hour from Panama city, low humidity, low crime, good prices; http://www.escapeartist.com/Altos_Del_Maria/Mountain_Garden.html
My wife absolutly loves it, views of the pacific and the atlantic.

Best thing for me is that panama is only about a 45minute flight from cali, and her family can come and go without much hassle.

What about Bucaramanga, I've been told that is a very beautiful city... alot of natural beauty and the residents are very friendly. Adela, el rey de la puntualidad is the name of one of his songs. Your right the song makes fun of the fact that the man was never on time to his concerts. When I was un pelaito, Lavoe use to come to panama for carnaval.
Que recuerdos, Lavoe use to get on a float and play "la murga", thats when carnaval en panama was great!! now a days its not the same.

gabriel comments on Familia in Colombia always asking for money

Matter of fact my wife just told me that, my suegro was asking for money to pay for my sister-in-law tuition, she's attending la universidad del valle. My suegro has a decent job he's a english professor, sad thing is that he has to wait months sometimes to get his check.
I guess the city or el departamento run out of money and the teachers have no other choice but to wait. I don't know how anybody could live not knowing when you're going to get paid.

gabriel comments on Colombianos in Panama

GRINGA60, you really shouln'd have any problems if you are traveling with her from colombia, just make sure you have the $500 dollars and your american passport.
VIEWPOINT, I think that panama has already change so much, people just don't realize how many colombian live in panama, how much colombian culture has influence panama in the last 5 years since the hand over of the canal. Most people think that the majority of colombians in panama are either prostitutes or drug dealer, thats far from the truth, there so many colombian families that have moved into my old neighbourhood that probably, half of the homes are occupied by colombian families from barranquilla, cali, medellin, santa marta, cartagena and so on.....

gabriel comments on this article was taken from el pais newspaper.. tells how tough it is to live in my neighbourhood. El Retiro

I saw this article in the newspaper, don't really know what to say about it, statistic sometimes are alot different than the reality of day to day living.
El homicidio en Colombia se reduce sustancialmente

gabriel comments on DE VERDAD QUE LAS GRINGAS SON MEJORES

Juanchito Hey guy what about JUANCHITO in cali, has anybody ever been,I've had some of my very best times rumbiando in juanchito. Just wondering because nobody seems to mention this place....and yes I know JUANCHITO is not for the faint of heart, but if you go in a group you should be alright. The last time I was in Cali there was a "ley zanahoria", so after 11 or 12 I think alot caleños went to party in JUANCHITO.

gabriel comments on Treatment of Black tourists from USA or England

much less In my opinion I saw much less racism in colombia than in the U.S. especially in Cali, but a lot more poverty among the black population. Colombian tend to be for the most part very warm and loving people, really never experienced any racism whatsoever and I'm a black panamanian that lived in Colombia for about a year. It was funny because a lot of the Colombian that I met still thought of panama as a department of Colombia.

Oh one more thing that I need to correct is that, colombia's black population is not 5% but 24-26% approx. 11-12 million colombian are of african decent.
