fill comments on Continental fares sharply higher for 2010.

I just checked Sacramento Bogota, about same dates. Up about $100 dollars from the last time I made that flight. Not too bad, I expect everything to cost more next year.

fill comments on IVA (VAT) refund?

We will be manufacturing industrial fire equipment in Colombia. The IVA of course is applied at 16% to all raw material and parts that go into the product. Most of the products will have between $100USD and $300USD in material, and hundreds of units per month, so you can see that's alot of tax. A friend just called a lawer in Bogota and he says the IVA is refundable some how but doesn't know the proceedures. I looked into free trade zones, but to form one requires 1.4 million USD investment. We are no where that size. Any info is welcome. Thanks

fill comments on IVA (VAT) refund?

is that in all cases? I read that if you were in a free trade zone that was true.

fill comments on Exporting from Colombia

I've checked with ups & fedex, I'm ordering heavy brass castings, need to ship about 1000lbs per month. container shipping cheapest I'm sure, but I don't need anywhere near a container in volume. I'm in Bogota now getting a few samples, I'll take those home with me as bagage. Next month I'll need to start shipping. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Don

I find it interesting to note how much they value manufcturing, mechanical engineer highest pay. In the US we are throwing away are manufacturing. Manufacturing leads to better overall wealth.

well, I love to cook BBQ (not grill) in a big wood fired smoker. To do it right it's a 10 hour process. Anyway My dad worked in Bogota late 60's early 70's I was in High school then. My wife and I are now planning to retire to Colombia in 5 years or so, and I thought why not BBQ I guess even if it didn't make any money it would still be fun.

fill comments on american vs gringo

gringo Word History: In Latin America the word gringo is an offensive term for a foreigner, particularly an American or English person. But the word existed in Spanish before this particular sense came into being. In fact, gringo may be an alteration of the word griego, the Spanish development of Latin Graecus, “Greek.” Griego first meant “Greek, Grecian,” as an adjective and “Greek, Greek language,” as a noun. The saying “It's Greek to me” exists in Spanish, as it does in English, and helps us understand why griego came to mean “unintelligible language” and perhaps, by further extension of this idea, “stranger, that is, one who speaks a foreign language.” The altered form gringo lost touch with Greek but has the senses “unintelligible language,” “foreigner, especially an English person,” and in Latin America, “North American or Britisher.” Its first recorded English use (1849) is in John Woodhouse Audubon's Western Journal: “We were hooted and shouted at as we passed through, and called ‘Gringoes.’”
