Colombian Travel Warning

The Colombian Embassy in Washington, D.C. advises all Colombians in the U.S. to keep a low profile and to remain vigilant as a result of many years of American military destructive activity abroad, domestic and international harassment of flight passengers, known violations of the Geneva Convention, among many other treaties, a centuries long history of aggressiveness, known torture gulags, such as Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, to which anyone, including citizens can be sent. Although the Embassy p ...

Fiesta tonight and tomorrow in Cali's Granada barrio

There are free food samples, entertainment for adults and kids, beer and music. I suggest going after sundown, because even though the signs say 11 AM to 11 PM, things were barely coming together today at 1:30 PM. Last year's Granada festival was lots of fun. Bring some money to have dinner at one of the nice restaurants. I suggest Granada Faro on 15th and 9th. There are also some hard to find food items to buy, plus demonstrations of new cooking equipment. ...

Real estate investment to consider

There is an amusement park being built near Buga, an hour north of Cali, along with some houses for people to rent while going to the park. Here is the info.

http://www.clubestancia.com/villas.htm

I'll summarize the fact sheet link. The houses cost USD $90,000. There is an obvious mistake on the page stating that the houses will be rented out when you are not staying there, and pay you USD $5,000 a week. I assume that number should be changed to USD $500 for each we ...

Learning Spanish book

I have read many books on learning Spanish, and taken four months of lessons, but the most useful thing I have done to learn Spanish is to read this book. It's not a school textbook, so it is cheap at $12.95.

This is a good book for those who are just starting to learn Spanish, to get a head start before taking lessons.

Driving strategies for Gringos

Considering renting a car in Cali? Forget about it. Take taxis. You can rent a taxi and driver for less anyway than the cost of renting a car. After I moved to Cali, I took taxis for a year, and after what I saw, had no desire to drive, but my wife insisted that we get a car. Though I had 31 years of driving experience in many US states, it took a full year of driving in Cali to be comfortable at it, and am still amazed at the Colombian driving mind. I would still rather take a taxi than drive, ...

How to rent out your Cali house

Just place an ad in the newspaper stating "House in Santa Monica for rent. 4 bedrooms, pool. 2.5 million" Then, when people call, invite them over.

Don't bother removing the bags of garbage from the floor. Never mind the fact that the toilets leak, the faucets drip, the pool is pea green, the showers have no shower heads, the shelves are missing from the closets and kitchen cabinets and the water heater was disconnected and sold long ago. Also, it's OK that you removed the curtain ...

Is there any cure for those Cali car alarms?

In the downtown of Cali where I live, not 2 mintues go by during the day when there isn't a car alarm sounding somewhere. The WheeWheeWheeWhee sound can be heard from a kilomter away. From my balcony, I can see some of the cars with the alarms on. One had the driver in it. Maybe the alarm is more entertaining than the radio? One was set off by a passing car. One was set off by the lady yelling "Aguacate!". One is in our apartment's underground garage and is set off by my dropping a garbage bag d ...
