el norteño comments on 23000 for a burger combo at Corral

An acquaintance insisted I try a Corral burger, best you'll ever eat. What a disappointment. Just another fast food burger at three times the cost. Someone mentioned the places along Quince in Bogota. Great deals. Soup, drink , entree, about 5K pesos.

el norteño comments on Botanical Garden in Medellín

I was there a year or so ago. It was a pleasant stroll, but disappointing overall. Doesn't compare to the one in Bogota.

el norteño comments on What should I do for overnight connection through Bogota

Sleep in the airport. I had a similar amount of time once at Miami and the time went fast.

el norteño comments on traveling to colombia.. is it expensive?

It's not as cheap as it used to be, that's for sure.

el norteño comments on Language school in medellin

Avoid EAFIT.

el norteño comments on EAFIT

Waste of time If you don't have previous knowledge of Spanish you will be totally lost. Fortunately, I had several years of self-study, but I don't think I learned anything new.

el norteño comments on How much costs life in Medellin?

EAFIT Eafit has a website, with an English section.
Prices, etc., are clearly detailed.

I did a four week course there last winter.
The level of instruction was disappointing.

Sr. London Typical arrogant limey bassturd.

el norteño comments on taking U.S.A cellphnoes to Colombia

internet cafe The times I've used internet cafes for calls the quality has been awful. 99% of the time I use email. But, it's good to know if I have to speak to someone, I can use my Sprint phone.

el norteño comments on Foiled another scam

You probably should discuss the incident with your accountant.
There's a connection there somehow. Anyway, stay on your guard for awhile.

el norteño comments on taking U.S.A cellphnoes to Colombia

Nextel Panthdave,

Your Sprint phone worked in Colombia?
You didn't need to pay a Colombian provider?
Also, what does GSM mean?
Thanks

el norteño comments on The 15 "Traps" of Poverty in Colombia

Rural development Even with the brief amount of time I've spent in the country, it's clear the transportation infrastructure needs a major overhaul.
One of the most positive initiatives of the Eisenhower administration was the Interstate Highway System. It opened up vast areas of the country to the flow of goods and services from the industrial centers. Economic growth was exponential. An analogy is to consider the highways to be the arteries of the nation. Colombia is in dire need of a similar program.

I think many of the urban poor would rather be back home on the farm.
But, then that gets back to the main problem. These idiots running around the countryside playing Robin Hood for 40 years need to come back to civilized society. If all groups lay down the gun, the economic potential is staggering. Then, you get into a situation where labor becomes scarce and real wages rise.

el norteño comments on LICEO CAMPESTRE DE PEREIRA - sci-fi?

comment I feel bad for the school owner. I can just imagine the expression on her face when she realized she had hired a whacko.

This whole thread illustrates the problem with English instruction in Colombia. Many people study it, and very few speak any of it.

el norteño comments on Where to find NFL, NCAA Football, NBA & NCAA Basketball, MLB in Colombia (and the rest of the world)

Nascar Hi Chris,

With Montoya moving over to Nascar, is it likely the races will be available on Colombian tv?

el norteño comments on Hangovers in Colombia

aguardiente The lesson here is to avoid aguardiente. That stuff is the worst rot gut I've had the misfortune to drink. It's not fit for human consumption.

el norteño comments on Tourists with no Money

backpackers I met quite a few backpackers during my time at a hostel in Medellin.
Most are slovenly , unkempt and unwashed. They come into town for a night or two. Most of their time is spent in the hostel kitchen cooking their paltry meals. Then , it's off on the next bus for another city. Honestly, I don't get it, most of their trip is spent riding buses.

el norteño comments on piedra del penol, who else has been there, and climbed those *&#&! steps?

La Piedra It's definitely an adventure getting up those steps. And I went up to the observation deck on top of the building.
Got vertigo for a few seconds and had to sit down and close my eyes.

el norteño comments on Info on Bogota (nightlife/spanish class) vs Medellin

Curios Joe Have you already paid for the EAFIT class?

I did a month long course there last winter, and I can't recommend it. Very disorganized
system. I talked to students in other classes, so it wasn't just my instructor.

el norteño comments on Sex Mongers in Medellin

Oh My Lord.
Older men paying Oh My Lord.
Older men paying young women for sex in Medellin , Colombia!

I'm outraged! Outraged, I tell you.

el norteño comments on World Cup comments & predictions

Italia France rely greatly on Zidane. At 34 he may be out of gas for the Final. I don't see France scoring. Italy's good for at least a goal, I hope. Plus, if Italy wins the Cup, the US looks a little better in hindsight. We were the only team to get a point off them and score (own goal).

Gringodiego, if you don't like ties and low scoring, do yourself a favor and don't watch soccer.

el norteño comments on why should we change the way we dress?

shorts I think a distinction should be made between wearing shorts and looking like a bum. During the day in Medellin, I've worn khaki shorts and a golf shirt. It just makes sense to me to be so attired in warm temperatures. And no, I'm not trying to assert American imperialism.

el norteño comments on World Cup comments & predictions

Time to chime in Even with all the gaffes. The poor coaching. The underachieving players. The overly defensive strategy. The round of 16 was there for the taking for the US. Ghana showed me nothing. They were nervous and tentative. Gifted two goals, they were able to hold on against a team playing ONE forward. Bruce Arena scuppered our chances with a 4-5-1 formation each game. A formation we haven't fielded until this tournament.

Look, American soccer fans know the FIFA rankings are a joke.
I would have been happy making the round of 16. That would have been a successful tournament for me.

el norteño comments on World Cup comments & predictions

mañana Amazingly, the US still has something to play for tomorrow.
Win or lose, I appreciate they kept me in the tournament for at least three matches. We could still advance. Weirder things have happened.

Kernow, I forgot about Howard. He'll be starting for Everton next season. And Hahnemann is the keeper for newly promoted Reading.

Bad luck with Owen. Still, England should handle Ecuador. After that, I 'm not sure.

el norteño comments on World Cup comments & predictions

Colombia winning the Cup? It could happen. In fact they had a team with enough talent to win it in 94. That was a fantastic team.

el norteño comments on World Cup comments & predictions

Kernow Reyna , when healthy, starts for Man City.
McBride was the leading scorer for Fulham.
Bocanegra also plays for Fulham.
The only American keeper in the Premier league is Friedel, who retired from international soccer.

Get your facts straight.

You remind me of an Englishman I met in Medellin.
He told me if the US ever won the World Cup he'd stop watching soccer. I replied , you better prepare yourself for never watching soccer someday. Eventually, it's going to happen. You just can't stop it. I know that keeps certain people up at night.

el norteño comments on World Cup comments & predictions

Opposite I'm a rarity. I never played it, but I enjoy watching it.

So far, Holland, Spain and Argentina have looked the brightest.
I'd like to see a new champion this time.

Brazil, again, would be boring. Besides, with Ronaldo sleep walking,
they can be beaten.

Embarassment The US coughed up a goal in the 5th minute, and basically that ended the tournament for the US. Germany 06 lasted 5 minutes for US soccer fans.

mañana What? No love for los Estados Unidos?
I think we're going to upset the Czech Republic.

el norteño comments on World Cup comments & predictions

England Very unconvincing display by England.
No wonder Erickson is desperate to get Rooney on the field.

Is David Beckham the most over-hyped player in the world?

el norteño comments on World Cup comments & predictions

Gomezman Brasil won the 1958 Cup in Sweden. But, they had a certain player called Pele. The current selecao looks awesome on paper. Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Robinho, Kaka. But who is going to do the defensive work in midfield? Their defense is suspect, and I'm not convinced Dida is a great keeper. On paper, they are unbeatable. But, I think it will happen.

el norteño comments on World Cup comments & predictions

Ticos Costa Rica were not prepared for this match. They started out very lackadaisical. Several times CR defenders tried to dribble the ball out of danger and were dispossesed by alert German attackers. This isn't the Costa Rican league. But, they did well to score twice.

Germany will probably win the group, but I don't see them as a threat to win the Cup. A good team will punish their defense.

I see one of the European big dogs lifting the Cup this year, Holland, England, Italy.

Oh, by the way, I'm predicting the US to advance to the round of 16. :-)

el norteño comments on Need your help about EAFIT

etc Look, don't let my criticism of EAFIT keep you from coming to Medellin. Maybe take a month long course. See for yourself. One thing someone told me who had taken a course last year was that you had to specifically tell them what you wanted out of the course. And, you get to hang around the campus, which isn't the worst thing in the world.

el norteño comments on Need your help about EAFIT

EAFIT You take a placement test at the beginning to determine which level, 1-9, you will take. At first, I was level 5. After one class I dropped to 4, but the instruction was still entirely in Spanish. I talked to people in level 1, and it was the same thing. Some people feel immersion is the best way, but I have to wonder. I was missing a good deal of what the instructor was saying. After a while, you tend to tune out.

We did cover the two past tenses, preterite and imperfect. Luckily, I had studied these previously. Other people in the class were lost.
Most of the class time was spent in conversation. Or playing board games, or watching a Colombian movie. No vocabulary, no new verbs. I basically just recirculated the 30 or so words I know already. I did learn one new word, porqueria. A Swiss classmate wore a tshirt one day that read, Mi Ex Me Regaló Esta Porqueria, that he had bought in the Centro.

A Norwegian buddy in level 9 thought it was an excellent program. But then he was already pretty fluent. At my level, I need more vocabulary and verbs.

el norteño comments on Student life in Medellin

EAFIT What are you studying, Spanish?
I did a month long course there. I was disappointed in the methodology.

el norteño comments on Bogota to Medellin by Bus

bus travel I stayed for a while in a hostel in Medellin.
Invariably, the backpackers took the night bus between cities. It is the preferred mode of travel. They don't have to pay for a night's accomodation and they arrive at their next destination in the am hours. Never heard of anyone having any trouble. It's been years since a foreigner was nabbed off a night bus. But, then I'd hate to be the one to break that streak, and I can't sleep on a bus anyway.

el norteño comments on Embassy message for American citizens in Colombia

Amerigo Vespuci I see, so since South America also has the word America in it, then we can also call ourselves Americans. Get it?

Actually, I could not care less what you call yourself, Simon.
I'm just curious where the nation of South America is located. I can't find it on the atlas.

el norteño comments on Embassy message for American citizens in Colombia

Taxis Is this primarily a Bogota problem?

I've hailed taxis off the street in Medellin dozens of times without incident.

el norteño comments on Embassy message for American citizens in Colombia

lesson Here we go again.
It's very simple.
The USA is the only country with the word America in it.
Therefore, we call ourselves Americans. Get it?
There is no nation called North America, or United States.

CIB GIB,
Check out Bancolombia's breakout on the NYSE today.

Your financial advice is worth what I paid for it.

el norteño comments on Porque la comida de USA no tiene sabor??

Carbs Colombian cuisine has too many carbodhydrates.
Get a typical bandeja and you get french fries, white rice, patacon, fried egg, cardboard arepa. Oh and don't forget the chincharon.
It's like a competition to see how many carbs you can fit on one plate. Vegetables? Forget it. I saw plenty of them in the produce sections of supermarkets, but restaurants almost never serve them with a meal.

I lost 10 lbs during the course of a month in Medellin.

el norteño comments on Should I be afraid of the police?

Don't go If you are that scared, do yourself a favor and stay home.

el norteño comments on The Americanization of Colombia

Correct You're on to something Elmo.

I did find it annoying to be sitting in a bar in Parque Lleras listening to the Village People or Kiss blasting over the sound system. The weirdest moment was hearing Sinatra's I've got you under my skin playing on the pa at the Parque Berrio Metro Station.

el norteño comments on

transportation Colombia clearly needs a highway development program akin to the Interstate Highway system initiated by Eisenhower in the 50s.
The benefits to the country would be astounding. But then again, you can't do it with these fools terrorizing the countryside.

el norteño comments on

Rural development It's a vicious cycle. How can you invest in the countryside when these Farc bandits are still operating?

el norteño comments on FARC website and its Swiss host!

Violence Platano, you ask what has 50 years of violence achieved for the government? Better yet, ask your Farc buddies what their decades of violence has achieved. Colombia is ready to explode economically. In fact, it already is experiencing strong growth. The Paras are laying down their arms, ELN is talking. All that remains is for Farc to come in from the jungle. Even if they don't , I see a bright future for this country. But, the odds are, this bandit army will continue to exist until it is inevitably crushed. There is no ideology, it is merely a criminal syndicate.

Actually, violence can solve problems. Violence ended slavery in the USA. Violence, and lots of it, stopped Hitler. And , in the end, Farc will die a violent death.

el norteño comments on Recommended Colombian investment fund?

CIB That's the symbol for Bancolombia ADRs available on the NYSE.

Take a look at a 2 year chart.

Colombia been bery, bery good to me.

el norteño comments on Spanish Course - Bogota

learning spanish in colombia "I have a question regarding the cse - when i questioned the staff, they said its more conversational with very little grammer and course structure. Most of it is talking and the teacher does not speak english (to translate). I will be in class with sudents much more advanced than me which they said is normal and better for learning. "

That quote perfectly describes my experience taking a month long course in Spanish at EAFIT in Medellin. No grammar, no vocabulary, no verb drills. But, you get to watch a Colombian movie and play Scrabble in Spanish.

The good thing is it only cost $265 US for the course, and I got to hang out in Medellin for a month.

I have to conclude it is a systemic problem, because none of the Colombians I met studying English could speak a sentence of the language.
There has to be a better way to learn a foreign language.
