Can someone please explain to me about Arepas? While in Colombia I was served these little white rocks that people eat (my friends and I called them white hockey pucks). I don't understand how colombians eat these things, they have absoloutley no taste! Learning spanish in Barranquilla

Hello all, well I was wondering if anyone has info on learning spanish in Barranquilla. I plan on staying in Barranquilla for 2 months. Is there any places that are cheap and safe to stay at? I search hotels online, and find that they are pricey, I know if I was to go down there in person I would find a better deal rather than searching yahoo or google.
