Setting things straight Everybody who has posted has been very one sided about the country. As Colombians we must accept the fact that it is a very violent country. I'm not trying to put down the dramatic improvements in the past couple of years but the fact is that despite these improvements, our country is still on of the most violent in the world. One thing that is not mentioned in the statistics of crime is that a very large number of crimes(including serious crime such as rape and murder) go unreported due to the complication of reporting anything in Colombia. For the most part, the police are indifferent. However, most of these crimes are a result of the enormous drug industry in the country. It would be a complete lie to say that the crime in the country doesn't affect the daily lives of people in Colombia. As for tourists, Colombia is not a country to avoid. Despite all the negative press it receives, if you are smart and stay away from neighborhoods and situations you dont need to be in, then you should be fine. But I am not dissing the country, I love the land of my family. One thing that is neglected in the majority of the posts is the most important thing which goes above the crime is....THE CULTURE. The greatest culture in the world. Colombians are such friendly people that even in the most dangerous neighborhoods, the people throw parties with their neighbors and trust each other. Even if our country is very dangerous, that is nothing because it is the greatest country in the world and we as Colombianos should be proud of it.(P.S. even though i love the country i am interested to see which way the crime rate and guerrilla war go after the second term of Uribe)Paz y amor.
