el flaco comments on Monteria hotels

Lots of cheap hotels near the linear park with iguanas and monkeysthat goes along the river, don't miss the park like I did first time. Hotel Alcázar - Cra. 2 No. 32-17, 30,000 for room with fan. Lots of other cheap options, try Hotel Americano - Calle 32 No. 1-65, or Hotel Central - Calle 34 No. 3-44. Also last year there was a brand new terminal de transportes outside the town, before that they were all over the place in the town.

el flaco comments on help moving boat from usa to colombia

Bill: but cheaper to hire someone to sail it to Havana rather than Cartagena and the boyfriend gets the chance of a long cruise.

el flaco comments on Any interest in Opening a Hostel in Bogota

A place in Villavicencio with a hot shower, now we're talking.

el flaco comments on help moving boat from usa to colombia

Sail it to Cuba and pick up your boyfriend there. It's easy for Colombians to visit Cuba. As everyone knows Cuba is very close to Florida.

el flaco comments on BRINGING LADIES TO UK TOURIST - UK EMBASSY

They work in pairs, a bi-lingual local and the English boss. The interview is in Spanish with the local, the boss and local confer in English. I suspect that the boss knows English as it's a requirement for the job but he doesn't use it. I was present a an English friend to "vouch" for her and was totally ignored. It was for a transit visa so there was no letter of invitation from me. You pay up-front for the visa and may not be granted it, they are not cheap. My educated guess is that her visa would be refused. Best of luck. Best of luck

el flaco comments on Como puedo borrarme de PBH?

Aren't those Colombians polite, a much higher standard of posting than us gringos. Does anybody know what borrar means?

el flaco comments on freight cargo carrier to Europe UK

www.trexco.net www.bstransport.co.uk from adverts in Express News a free Latin American paper in London.

el flaco comments on Hostel and "Motel" or just Motel?

Use a residencia, I wouldn't want to stay the night in one but they are so cheap I use them for a siesta.

el flaco comments on Undercover police scam

This applies to all countries, ask to see their gun. If they have no gun they're not policemen.

el flaco comments on Guesthouse in Salento?

I've been there, strong recommend. They give free information on the trips.

el flaco comments on Guia de Rutas por Colombia now internationally available.

However it is not that accurate, some of the dates for festivals were wrong by months not days.

el flaco comments on San Gil or Barichara

Barichara is very expensive to stay at, if I were to do it again I'd bus in from San Gil.

el flaco comments on Where to stay for 24 houras in LAX arriving from Colombia

It sounds like you have a long time in Miami, there are lots of hotels nearby but the area is boring (that's why it's close to the airport). Better to head to the beach area with the restored art deco hotels. You can have fun just walking about or if you have time do a tour. Loads of Colombians there. I recommend the Clay Hotel located in south beach on 1438 Washington Ave between 14-15 streets. It’s close to all the South Beach action and 5 minutes from the beach.. You can catch the Metro Bus (Miami public transportation) from the Airport for under $2. www.clayhotel.com To get to the buses at the airport go outside and cross the roads in front of you the buses are hidden away 100 yards. Or get a taxi, not that expensive. If you want to go the hotel shuttle route, don't go for a specific hotel as the shuttles only run every half hour, instead get on the first one that comes.

el flaco comments on Ciudad Perdida 6 day Trek- Are Malaria pills really necessary?

It takes one female mosquito that has bitten a malaria carrying person to then bite you. The trek avoids all populated areas, your fellow travelers don't have malaria so the risk is minimal.

el flaco comments on Few Pointers

The voltage is 120 volts so not much will work in Colombia, you can easily buy plugs in Colombia and I'm sure that the shop would fit them as well.

el flaco comments on Brighton - Its just like Cartagena

I think you are all missing the point. The charm of Colombians is that they always want to flatter you. The girl compared the town with Colombia's best town just to be friendly not to make a point. Similarly they all praise my Spanish, bless them, even if it's stretching the truth, who cares?

el flaco comments on Ciudad Perdida 6 day Trek- Are Malaria pills really necessary?

There are mosquitos everywhere on the trip including the Ciudad Perdida. You should dress appropriately and or use repellent. However risk from any disease is minimal. Mosquito nets are provided and needed on the trip. Having said that there aren't swarms of them only a few.

el flaco comments on Los Faroles Azules love hotel

I stayed at one once overnight as there was nothing else available, I was embarassed being on my own - they still supplied me with a condom as well as a bar of soap.

el flaco comments on Casa Onkara - San Gil

Come on, give us an address.

el flaco comments on

I met a Colombian in Bogota, his grandparents were from the Lebanon but emigrated to Colombia. They learned the language and changed their religion to Catholic.

el flaco comments on Hardest to understand??? Costeños vs. Cubans

Cuban and Costeño Spanish are very similar, however costeños must be the fastest talkers in the world which makes them very hard to understand even if you are used to the accent.

el flaco comments on weeklong trip - pereira - medellin - bogota advice

I'm not sure where your coffee farm tour is but there is an excellent one organised by the Plantation House, you walk there and back on a circular route (not too far) which is fantastic in itself. The tour is only in Spanish however. You need a whole day for the valle de cocora because the jeeps only operate in the morning and late afternoon, so no half days. Plantation house will lend you a map, the walk is well worth it. I got absolutely filthy with the dust riding on the jeep, be prepared and hide away your hat.

el flaco comments on El Choco Gold Fotos

Keep them coming. When's the best month to visit the place? Worse month?

el flaco comments on I want to visit friends in Columbia

excavator59: are there passenger boats on the river Magdalena? I have never heard of any.

el flaco comments on Cartagena mini report

And Manizales?

el flaco comments on Street Scenes from Quibdo, El Choco

I do envy you, I'd love to go. Last February I planned to go and take the boat down the river however my nerve failed me. A bus went over the cliff on the way to Quibdo killing everyone on board, there was extensive flooding and a strike that I didn't understand. Thanks for posting.

el flaco comments on

It doesn't matter, they'll understand you if you get it wrong.

el flaco comments on Colombia hosts the International Cattle Queen 2009 contest

It's worth reading the wikipedia entry on Colombian beauty queens. Another world.

el flaco comments on Pacific Coast

I've never understood this 50% off for kids, in my world it would be 50% extra. Who wants them at such a place.

el flaco comments on

Moneygram in the UK also spells it as Columbia on their leaflets, would you trust your money with them?

el flaco comments on HOW EASY IS IT TO BUY TICKETS AT BOGOTA AIRPORT???

I did just that as I was frightened of miising my flight should there be any delays. I went to the Avianca office at the airport and bought a ticket for the next plane to Santa Marta which was going in one hour. I paid by Visa and paid the normal fare, obviously there were no special offers. However my flight was from Havana so I arrived fresh and at midday. You would arrive at eleven at night absolutely exhausted. You would be better flying via Miami spending a night in that wonderful city or via New York with American Airlines.

el flaco comments on Pacific Coast

The price is in dollars. The property is on the Caribbean not the Pacific.

el flaco comments on Hotel Santa Marta for my moto and me

Hostel Casa Familiar, you can wheel your motorbike into the building. See the PBH travel section.

el flaco comments on Sincelejo experts?

I've been there for a day and only met happy helpfull people. I didn't stay there, it is a big place and is bound to have a hotel to your standard.

el flaco comments on Colombian honeymoon in Aruba

I know a Colombian couple who went to Aruba without any trouble at all. It used to be Dutch but is now an independent country. I don't know if you'll need a visa but you'll need a passport.

el flaco comments on Sailing

A good website but please spell Colombia correctly. There is an established unofficial service of private boats sailing to and from Panama and Colombia and documented in the travel section. Yacht owners advertise using hostels, they pay a fee to the hostal for providing pasengers. passengers get an all inclusive deal with no work expected from them (eg cooking, watch keeping). The boats are usually 12 metre sailing boats but they are undercutting you on price.

el flaco comments on Best place to stay in Santa Marta or Rodadero?

So you want to stay in the best place in town but don't want to spend any money.

el flaco comments on Reality Check - 04/27/2009

Keep posting please.

el flaco comments on Going to a Wedding in Colombia

I went to a wedding in Barranquilla, everyone hired formal suits and wore ties. Because of the heat, jackets were soon taken off but you are expected to arrive wearing one. You may not be able to hire a suit in your size!

el flaco comments on Two young aussies coming to Colombia for a month+ to learn spanish and getting to Cuba

Colombia is surprisingly expensiveand isn't really geared up to teaching Spanish. I would recommend Ecuador for learning the language, they have one to one tuition and homestays. It is easy to get to Cuba from Colombia, just go to any travel agent. There are flights from other countries as well, I wouldn't bother going to Cancun if it's just to get to Cuba. I'm sure that you could go from Mexico city direct. Latin America is different to the rest of the world, no one seems to know any English, so yes get stuck into Spanish. Enjoy.

I've never heard of Southgate even though I've lived in London all my life, is this lodon Ontario? Can you supply an address?

el flaco comments on Do you Know anything about the beautiful pink house near Tequendama Falls (Bogota, Colombia)?

Billy: tell us more about your river trip up the Magdalena, when was it? I thought they'd stopped years ago.

el flaco comments on

I thought you'd retired to Barranquilla, what are you doing back in New York? Was it you who gave me a lift to Santa Marta from the hotel Versailes in Barranquila a couple of years ago?

el flaco comments on My Spanish Classes in Bogota

I had private lessons as well, the only way to go. I decided on the fast route, I didn't bother with ser and estar or por and para neither do I use the subjunctive. I was able to speak holiday Spanish very quickly which is what I wanted, however although people understand me I have picked up some bad habits and if I had my time over again I would go the slow route. You're in charge do what you want but no I don't think she's milking you as you never stop learning. I also reccomend reading Spanish as you will be able to spot the grammar rules and reinforce them. Suerte

el flaco comments on offtopic...about hotels

hotel españa, via españa, calle Martin Sosa is central and good value, I stayed there.

el flaco comments on Puerto Gaitan, Los Llanos and Wildlife Watching

I was told by Colombians to stay away from the Llanos as it is still guerilla country. Villavicencio was bombed this month and was the airport where they flew in the released hostages by helicopter so it must be close to guerilla country. Having said that I had a wonderful time in that town and I also went by bus to San Juan de Arama safely with the usual army presence and requisas. So the usual conflicting information about Colombia, is it safe or was I lucky? As a general comment I felt safer in Colombia than in Europe but then I didn't go out at night anywhere.
