I didn’t know this, the first iteration of Wikipedia was called Newpedia, and was based on a custom CMS with a 7-step review process ;)

    Kind of.

There was NuPedia, which was going to be a peer reviewed encyclopedia of awesomeness. Wikipedia was designed to be a place where anyone could place writeups and, if they were good enough, they would one day be promoted into being a real NuPedia article - Wikipedia was, really, step one of the NuPedia review process.

Turns out nobody cared, and people just used the Wikipedia article anyway, and history was born.
