I dislike how Firefox won’t animate gifs, now that they’re cool again.

errr … works for me (both ff3b4 & ff2 on winxp). maybe check image.animation_mode setting in about:config? more info on http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_:_Tips_:_Animated_Images. Apparently some firewalls can stop animations as well)?
