I just had an insight. Metadata is determined by its usage, not its definition. That is, what people *do* with tags determines what they *are*, not how you define them. Same for lots of types of metadata.

It could be true… but what about faceted classification? I mean the f.c. is an a priori system (first the facets are defined by some information architect or librarian, then they can be used by users) and maybe is not compatible with a folksonomy system… what do you think about it?

I figure we can merge faceted systems and folksonomies. But if I define a facet, and the users use it in a different way, then what des the metadata mean? What I defined, or how the users used it?
