India’s wireless culture

Om Malik on Broadband: India’s wireless culture:
“My recent trip to India opened my eyes to how Indians were using wireless technologies in various different spheres of life. I saw a wireless-enabled ATM machine on a ferry, and wireless-enabled delivery boys with credit card machines.”

On my upcoming trip to India (6 weeks woohoo!) I plan to keep an eye out for interesting uses of technology. Meanwhile, all pointers are welcome.

The trip to India sounds compelling from the several posts you’ve made about your plans. But have you said anything about why you are going? What prompted the trip? Where are you going, etc. Give us the scoop!

Honestly? I love to travel and I’ve deserved it. I decided to take a break and travel at least a little bit before setting up my own business.

This story is in stark contrast with my experiences in India. On my most recent trip, I flew into Bangalore–India’s most progressive city (in terms of technology, at least). Maybe it’s the way I travel (backpacker style, but this time I didn’t rough it nearly as much as I have in the past), but in the area in Bangalore where I stayed, the Internet cafes used dodgy old PCs running Windows 98 on shared dialup connections.

In Delhi I was lucky enough to find a place with a broadband connection, but they were running 30-40 PCs and while the connection was way faster than dialup, it wasn’t lightening fast.

But before anyone thinks I’m complaining, I’m not! It’s wonderful to be able to access the net while travelling in India, but better still, it’s wonderful to be in India.

Peter, I’m green with envy. Do have a wonderful trip.
