BE the sysadmin?
Here’s a question in the ongoing quest of starting my own company. I’m a pretty bad sysadmin, so I’d like to work together with someone good for some projects I have planned.
Have you worked together with a sysadmin on an irregular basis? I don’t imagine paying someone every week - my ideas won’t bring in enough $ for that. Apart from becoming one myself, what are my options? I just need someone to set up a server (nothing too complex, I could do it myself but it would take me two weeks where it would take a pro a few hours, plus I want it done properly.), and to check it now and then (hopefully rarely).
Is hoping for a working arrangement for a situation like this naive? Have others done it? Should I learn ALL skills needed to run the web based services I am working on? Any tips or experiences welcome!

Hi.
My experience is that you find someone to manage your server for you. Find someone with some experience with whatever platform you choose. This has worked pretty well for the sites I have worked on that do not have an in-house staff, or an in-house anything for that matter.
So what you are looking for is a small managed hosting provider. You could probably find someone good in your local area.

“So what you are looking for is a small managed hosting provider.” I thought managed hosting providers don’t do much more than restarting servers? I need someone that I can discuss things with, for example someone who can help me set up a log that measures bandwidth usage of video files. Would a managed hosting provider do that? I already have hosting btw.

I expect any type of service where you _need_ a sysadmin, you are going to end up with at least one, probably more, dedicated servers. At this point, you are going to have to pay somone to do it right. I suppose “managed hosting” might have some meaning with the huge ISP providers. Again, I suggest looking for a small outfit where you are calling the sysadmin directly and working with him. I think searching Google is probably not a good find to find one of those. You probably need a recommendation from someone.

Thanks for the input! So… any recommendations?
