Logging the documentary
I’m happy to report that loggnig the documentary happens pretty much at live speed. I just run the tape and log as it goes. So 20 hours of tape means 20 hours of logging. Not too bad.
I created a table in Word. The first column has the timecode (0:25:41), the second the scene (”plane”), the third details (”old man looking”), the fourth comments (”nice image - bad sound”). I only use the comments for 1 out of every 5 rows, more or less. A 1 hour tape turns into about 2 pages in Word. I just run the video on the TV and type in my Word doc as it goes.

I did that in college, as an intern at a public television station. If I knew what I know now, I’d include some kind of handy navigation in there too, as the editing process involves endless paging through that log. Simply putting tabs on the pages (physical, printed pages) can go a long way.

Good idea - I’ll keep posting how it goes.

There is a software program made to do DV clip logging, that I use called CatDV. It is simple to use and is reasonably priced.

I really want anyone to recommend a great microphone for the money to make a documentary. The hyperlink for this sight no longer works. Shotgun mics range from $60.00 to $800.00. But what works really well for not to much. Allan
