I see that you preferred an earlier version of the tire swing cartoon. The only earlier version on my site had the same content, but in a form that was harder to read and took longer to load. If you are interested, the source is in “The Oregon Experiment” by Christopher Alexander, et. al., Oxford University Press (and still in print). If you give me a mailing address, I’d be happy to photocopy it and send it to you.
cheers,
Fred

Found this while looking for the cartoon. Thanks for the link and the bib ref here. I haven’t looked at the original text, but I think what the original poster is referring to. I recall seeing this cartoon with at least one additional panel at the very beginning. This panel illustrated “What the user requested” and in it was drawn the tree with a normal wood board swing correctly placed with two straps on one branch. This gave the progression to “what was proposed” more logical, and also made the ending funnier in that while what the first panel was stated was perfectly logical it was also fundamentally incorrect. I only recall it taped on the wall of my college’s it office in the mid 80s.

Are you sure that The Oregon Experiment is the origin of the famous tire swing cartoon? I was sure that it was a book on systems analysis or programming.
