dwr comments on Should I keep Working After I Retire?

No Job Dude. You're retired. And don't retire in Bogota please. Bogota = hustle and bustle. Coast. Maybe Santa Marta or somewhere in between Cartagena and Baranquilla. Maybe a place in the mountains away from it all. You have the opportunity to live the dream. Don't entertain the vague job.

dwr comments on Lasik in Cartagena or thereabouts?

How much does it cost? Any idea>?

dwr comments on Peru compared to Bolivia: how expensive?

This is a really lively board.

dwr comments on Camote in Colombia?

Those are what I brought home today Kat1. Have you ever been to Codabas on the septima con 170? Great market

dwr comments on Camote in Colombia?

My original questions remains unanswered though. In Peru they eat Camote. It is delicious with their ceviche. What are camote in Colombia? Do they exist. Is it this ñame? The batatas did not look anything like camote Peruano.

dwr comments on Camote in Colombia?

Now I feel like an idiot. The guy was saying ñame and I understood Yame for Yams. hehe

dwr comments on Camote in Colombia?

I just got back from the open market Codabas. They had what they called batata but they were very small. As big as a large finger. That photo above are Yams. They had them at the market and called them yames.

dwr comments on Poll...Colombian products in the USA or Europe?

I have a friend who exports dried Uchuvas. Like raisins only Uchuvas. Very good

dwr comments on Walking from Panama to Colombia

That Goliath Expedition guy is really out there. I think I will read his whole journey over the next few days. Even more out there is the story of Theodore Roosevelt's journey down the River of Doubt in Brazil. An amazing boook: The River of Doubt. Check it out.

My mother still insists on sending Easter, Thanksgiving, Xmas and Birthday cards to me in Colombia. They take anywhere between 6 weeks and 3 months to arrive. Try and get a P.O. box in Miami that delivers to Colombia. There are several and I'm sure a search here will produce them.

dwr comments on Poverty in PBH

You really should always file your tax returns. Takes 5 minutes if you are poor (make under 84,000 dollars a year), and believe me, will save you a huge headache down the road.

dwr comments on Increased Legal Protection For Women

Man I must live in another world here in Colombia. It just seems to me that the women surrounding me at work and at home are not only respected but in some ways the ones that run the show.

dwr comments on Increased Legal Protection For Women

Yeah. I just can't picture that here in Colombia. Even with the macho attitudes and all. That is bizarre.

dwr comments on Increased Legal Protection For Women

I find that story hard to believe.

dwr comments on IRS economic stimulous sent to Colombia

You think calling the IRS and trying to get an account in their hands would work or too much beaurocracy?

dwr comments on I'm gonna try one last time.

Robi, I used to travel to Bolivia a lot. La Paz, Trinidad, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz and once stranded in the Amazon Benni region. I always enjoyed Santa Cruz. It didn't feel like Bolivia. La Paz was not a favorite. Altitude hurt. People look at you like you are from another planet. Terrible food. Santa Cruz had a good nightlife, nice people and ok food. Santa Cruz felt like another country from the rest of Bolivia. I don't think I could live there.

dwr comments on Camote in Colombia?

Cool. Thanks! Batata

So your trip was good Elmodefoque?

dwr comments on Peru compared to Bolivia: how expensive?

I remember the xmas lights of the Chongo from the highway!

dwr comments on Who is or are your favorite posters that you have had over the years here on PBH ?

I enjoyed the down and dirty street scene direct from GIB.

dwr comments on Peru compared to Bolivia: how expensive?

I lived in Trujillo many years ago and been to both Chimbote and Chicalyo. Chiclayo is very nice. Chimbote was more industrial but had one of the best cheviches there. Northern coast of Peru rules!

dwr comments on Use of American Dollars in Colombia? Quick!

You didn't hear? The Colombian peso was replaced by the US Dollar. Come on down and spend freely!

dwr comments on

And those who can't teach, moderate! Just joking!

dwr comments on

What is the expat population of Colombia anyway?

dwr comments on

I guess that is what I mean. The current strategy is targeted at this one group. What about the business of drugs? How is it going to manifest itself in the new Colombia? Why would it be any less violent? And concerning the strength of the peso, I'm not sure 80% of the population will be in favor of the economic strategies of the current administration if unemployment goes through the roof.

dwr comments on Chavez urges Colombian rebels to free all hostages

I think Chavez is making a play to be the next drug kingpin!

dwr comments on

You cannot forget one basic fact. The demise of the FARC does not solve the problem in Colombia which is cocaine. As long as you have easy billions to be made from cocaine, you are going to have roaming bands of traffickers producing the illicit material and defending it with their lives. Remember the late 80's and 90's in Colombia. The FARC were not the main problem. It was a guy named Pablo. He died. FARC took over. Who will be the next to carry on the violent tradition in Colombia? Chavez? Is he bumping his competition out of the way? Concerning the strong peso, who is going to employ the hundreds of thousands that live off of coffee, flowers and other exports? The oil people? I don't think so.

dwr comments on Colombia Vonage & VOIP in Colombia

Why don't you just download the softphone version of Vonage? 15 dollars a month. Very good quality.

dwr comments on Can a foreigner cash out a Colombian Pension Early?

I guess I need to rephrase my question. Is there anyway to withdraw a Colombian pension if you are a foreigner who has not reached the age of 65?

dwr comments on Can a foreigner cash out a Colombian Pension Early?

My understanding is that it has to do with age. Bill, how did you get your pension out after 7 years? I have more than 10 years work history.

dwr comments on Financial Move Opinions?

Monthly payment is around 560,000 pesos for the 10 year loan of 30,000,000. a 17,000 dollar loan at 5% for 5 years would produce a monthly payment of 320 dollar a month.

dwr comments on Financial Move Opinions?

That's kind of what I'm thinking Rubito. A 15,000 dollar loan could turn into a 25,000 loan easy. Colombian mortgage is similar to loan sharking.

dwr comments on Financial Move Opinions?

Credit Card rates in Colombia are more like 28%. Mortgage rates are 18-20%
