Wants to travel to: no travel plans...just want to get our youngest through catholic high school and off to university, so mom and i can return to the family in colombia.
Favourite traveling style: the most comfortable possible. after so many years of working in so many poor, depressing countries, flying first class and using nice hotels is my style.

hi DW, thanks for the reply on medaillin and the fashion industry. I currently do all my production in china, i wish it was in colombia :( . Anyway i came across Colombiamoda show in MED on the internet which somewhat relates to my industry and i think i'll go check it during that week. Yeah, i would really appreciate escaping the tourist traps and gettting to know MED/Colombia and all in a different manner. i must admit, although i've done extensive travelling from backpacking to business, some of these crime stories are freaking me out (the one about drugging people), knowing myself as the adventurous type, i feel i could run into trouble. I would appreciate any advice, contact, that you might be able to provide, are you down there now ?

Hi Douglas,

I am very glad to add you as a friend and quite flattered to be part of your friend list as well!

I don't know about spending christmas in Colombia this year :( but I will be there beginning of next year, I *might study there for a few months.. and who knows what else! Life is a river and I am riding the current. Sometimes it's mellow, sometimes it's whitewater and you need the paddles and the helmet lol. There is still a chance I might spend New Years in the caribbean (tobago) if I find decent airfare.

Lucky you spending chrismas in your nice warm florida weather. I spent christmas in Miami a couple of years ago... nice, we sat in the backyard grilling chicharrones and chorizos and drinking guarito. It was fun. One thing I really suck at is surviving winters.

Well, if I am ever in florida I will give you a shout, please do the same if you ever find yourself up here in the artic circle he he he.

hi,

just saw your post about llano grande EAFIT campus. im going back to medellin in september(MY 3RD TIME!), before i used to work for a private institute and my second time i kindda worked for some 'friends' that turned out to screw me over for money. anyways, wanted to ask you for advice. i would like to set up a volunteer(NGO) organization in medellin. im interested in teaching english to poor children in schools where they cant afford an english teacher. i did it before in thailand but most of my life i taught in taiwan where i am at the moment.

i know theres is one org called GLOBATEER but they are charging ridiculous amount of money if you want to volunteer(something like 600USD/week). my idea would be to start teaching english for these kids and also start a project where i could get people from all over the world coming to medellin and volunteering without paying so much. other than that im also interested in volunteering with street dogs. i dont even know if you can help me somehow with this so sorry to bother you with this msg. but if you had any ideas or recommendations please let me know. thanks a lot!

Hola Douglas - Happy Father's Day. Sometimes Dad's get missed on this day and I never know why. Ironically I noticed every year my father is out of the country on this day. I eventually learned it was strategic, as I was the only one of his children to wish him a Happy Father's Day every year....I think it hurt his feelings his other kids don't do the same. So if he is unavailable - then he does not have to think about it (sad huh). So - I don;t care if he is in Spain I am calling him, ja!!

I apologize for dropping three comments on your page here -not quite sure what happened. I used to date a Colombiana who came to the states and we have remained friends. She is a great lady who when we met was suprised at my knowledge of Colombia and also my favorite writer is Gabo. She now has her children here and I am so impressed with how great these kids are. I have met a lot of her family and they are really good people -within 5 minutes of meeting her father, we were sitting down having a beer and playing guitars; you cant beat that. We both live here in Alabama and I am truly amazed at how much she enjoys camping and we plan on getting her kids into it. I have never been to Colombia, but it is on my radar. By the way, when are you going to get back there?

Douglas

I could not find your email address or I would have sent you a private message. But anyway, I wanted to catch you up on my trip to Barranquilla. There are certainly many stories to tell. I had a great time. I stayed in and really liked Barranquilla norte. It reminded me of a little Miami. I met some very nice people there. I will get back for sure. Certainly, there are other parts that are very much poverty stricken. I took a tour one day, and saw Soledad and other parts. I do understand why perhaps there are so many women online looking for marriage and dating services there. There is much growth. Certainly seeing prosperity and feeling like one can not participate must be very hard. There is much opportunity there, to do many things, including hooking up. I purposely did not look for any p4p in Barranquilla, though I did do a drive by the places I read about. Besides I had my hands full with what I was doing. I would imagine that given more time there will be more opportunity to explore, as well as create some new liaisons.

I found all of what I was informed that I would encounter. One who simply wanted to feed, literally, at the trough. Another looking for a a sugar daddy. And another looking for love and the joy of leaving me very tired. I liked Colombia very much, at least the part of the country I visited. I think next time I will head to Bogota and also visit Barranquilla. I wanted to go to Barranquilla first because I thought it would be more diverse than Bogota or Medellin. I liked that part very much. The diversity and the beauty. I could see that Cartegena is really influenced by the African/Caribbean slave trade and culture. I have to tell you being in Central America sometimes makes me feel the embarrassment of riches that exist in America. So, I will continue to make contact, and explore, and get back to Barranquilla in January or February

I was also in Costa Rica. That country still feeds my soul. All in all it was a nourishing trip. I look forward to meeting you one day. Thanks for the education and the advice.

Appreciatively
Wayne

There is a possibility that we will transfer flights in Fort Lauderdale on our way home, I am embarrased to say I dont know how far Ft.L and Daytona Beach are apart. We are a little sad to find that you are not in Colombia

Hola Douglas, I believe that we can help to get rid of poverty one person at a time. I have been very fortunate to not only be born poor but also to acquire financial freedom very early in my life. These two things have molded me into a woman of inner power and financial strength, which I use to not only motivate other poor women in Barranquilla but to assist them financially. Every trip I take to Barranquilla [once a year for 4 months], I identify 2-3 young women who have the potential to be small business owners/leaders and I work with them in developing their business skills and lend them the seed capital they need to start their business venture. I've been doing this for the last 3 years and it's been not only rewarding but the moneys have been paid back and re-invested. I have made it my business not only to live in the same neighborhood with these women, but to get to know them and share with them as friends. I go with them to visit suppliers, manufacturers, attend ferias, show them how to deal with government bureaucrats and the Colombian bureaucracy [no so different than American bureaucrats] and it is paying off, of 10 women I invested in, 7 are going strong. I have worked hard to gain these women’s respect and trust, that I was not just a flight by night and that after the first mishap I was not going to bail out on them. I haven’t. I keep in touch with them through Skype when I’m not in Colombia, to encourage and scold when necessary, as a good mentor I teach by examples and I never look down on them, their homes or neighborhood, neither do I try the’ American’ business style approach. It’s after all ‘Colombian’ business style and they are both very different. I’m just one with them and as Colombian business women we are in this together.

Although I do love art and collect it whenever I can I am not qualified to buy and sell "real" art. I would probably end up keeping whatever I liked. No doubt I would lose money. I agree that if I want to import a mom and pop will not do, but the major producers require minimum purchases that are beyond the scope of this project. Hey Douglas, that guitar is a D'Angelico new yorker double cutaway prototype made in japan by the vespax company. It is the model supposedly that D'Angelico was working on before his death as most his guitars were single cutaway jazz boxes. This one is a semi-hollow, has spruce top (extremely resonant), Ebony fingerboard, and I haven't any idea what the neck is made of -pretty wood though. I snagged it from a collector who had a few hundred thousand dollars of the original D'As. I have played one of the originals and it was a sixty-five thousand dollar guitar -I was soooo nervous playing that, but it had a magic feel to it and tons of character. I was honored the dude would even let me touch that guitar. Douglas, do you play any by chance?

yeah, but i haven't touched my axe in years. now my youngest plays with it. i play classic. in fact, i used to--back in the ice age of my life--play lute. i've also played sitar, sarod, and tamboura. i really like indian music. i always had trouble with steel strings, used to have an old gibson f hole and a.....shit, i forget, a real nice pro studio axe....but them steel strings just really did numbers on my fingers. with a sitar and a sarod, they're not strung as tight and it's a little easier. but when i played all the time it was always nylon or gut strings.

where are you now? we're stuck in lodi...........daytona until the youngest finishes high school and HOPEFULLY she chooses a university close to our oldest son, so he can ride shotgun. mom and i want to go home. i got no more mtns to climb.

FreakyG says on Oct 4, 2009, 11:03:

Hey Douglas, I am in Birmingham, Alabama -been here for a while. I used to play in a small bluegrass band and we did a lot of the standards, our own originals (like those cause nobody can say you are playing it wrong lol), and some newgrass type stuff. I have tried my hand at mando, dobro, violin, bass and I have to say -I am just a guitarist. I love playing with those dudes as they are way better at their craft than I am. Before that, I played a lot of heavy metal and classic rock and now I primary play jazz. Play lots of Miles Davis stuff from when John Mclaughlin played with him -love jazz/fusion. This morning I played a nice one from Emerson, Lake and Palmer on the acoustic -From the Beginning which is such a classic. I hear you on the nylon string vs the steel string. I used to whip out a guild 12 string jumbo at shows that would kill your left hand as that is a butt-load of tension on all the strings. I learned I could tune down a step or two and use a capo which was a relief. You had an old f-hole gibson? -those are nice! I have a few vintage gibsons from the 60s and my fav is a 61 es-330 true hollowbody which were the sleepers on the vintage market -recently the market woke up to these jewels unfortunately and the collectors are grabbing them up. Jerry Douglass is the dobro player in Union Station and he is amazing in concert. Alison Krauss is a very nice lady -my sister was kind of a big-wig in Nashville and I got to meet Alison in 2002 and I was floored at how down to earth the lady is -super humble and beautiful. She is the youngest member to be inducted in the grand ol opry (country music hall of fame) when she was just 12 years old. She can play the fire out of the violin but her additions are so tasteful and well placed -it really completes their sound. I believe Gibson makes a Jerry Douglas signature dobro -he is such a badass.

I cant wait to hear when you get back down to COL man. I know you have been tolerating daytona and I feel for you on that. When do you think you might get down that way?

Thank You Eversomuch, and then some

Hey Douglas,

You pasted some things to my profile that I think were intended for FreakyG. Not into music other than enjoying listening to it.

I am in Raleigh NC these days. You struck my interest because I have seen you had a wood industry connection in the past and you appear to be one of the more stable personalities in this place. I work in the wood business too and I love it, but the last few years it has been like loving an alcoholic woman. The little voice keeps saying "save yourself", jaja. I think I will start listening to it thanks to this latest downturn.

I have been married to my Colombianita for almost 13 years now and have spent many months of my life there, though never lived there full time as of yet. I started going there in 96. Love the place, though it can be pretty messed up as well.

Good to have you as a friend. Keep in touch.
