Peanut butter

Anybody know exactly why peanut butter and other common USA products aren't readily available in Colombia and the rest of S. America? Is it the taxes? You know, once it's imported it's $15/small jar. Or is it that the market is so small? i.e. only handful of people know how good it is, so it's not worth trying to bring here. Surprise

Hope this isn't too banal a question, but planning first trip to Bogota. Going to visit friend, but want it to be a surprise because I'm supposed to be coming a little later than I plan. My question has to do with a safe taxi ride or other transportation to his apartment. I've heard that just hopping into any cab is not a good idea because they may or may not be actual cab drivers. Or is this not true at airports, only on streets? Is there another alternative? How would i go about doing ...
