diobahn comments on Apartment rentals for Carnival en Salvador Bahia - 2009 Miguel, I have tried (as you also did) three x's to respond to your PM. I have a friend from Bogotá who is in Salvador right now. I have asked him to share any info about rentals that he may have. (He's staying with friends). I'll share what he passes along. Surely wish this PM feature were a bit more user-friendly! d-

diobahn comments on Learning PORTUGUESE from SPANISH-- anybody done this? Yes, I went thru the exact same thing, 'cept I tried to learn both at the same time. At first, I tried to make portugés follow the same rules as español...........I already had a jumpstart with español---had two semesters under my belt. I had to consciously convince myself that ne'er the twain should meet............then it was a lot easier. I must admit that I asked a lot more questions trying to understand the differences, but it was fun, and I prolly learned more by knowing what questions to ask. You won't lose your Spanish, you will understand and appreciate it all the more. Boa sorte!!

diobahn comments on It's a heck of a lot easier to go to Control Panel, select Languages (in this case Colombian Spanish) You will see an ES down below on the bar. Then simultaneously press CONTRL ALT and your characters will appear. CNTRL = ALT n=ñ By default it returns to EN everytime you sign out. but just click on the ES again, ññ To type an accented vowel, CN TRL ALT ´=éíóú. I found ü by playing around. It's on the y character. ¿? ¡!. Much simpler than hunting for characters. HTH

diobahn comments on Colombian in Thailand Be aware that there is a scam still going on in Bankok. You catch a tuk tuk to go to one of the local attractions, and the driver tells you....sorry, it's closed today. Then he offers to ride you around. He will stop at a place where a well-dressed accomplise is waiting..............to take you to to buy some unbelievable bargains in investment-quality jewels. He will have a very convincing speil...............but they just ain't worth one tenth of what is claimed. The Bankok police are doing all they can to fight this, but the tourist is usually just stuck, as he won't have the time to remain to proscecute. If it sounds to good to be true.................

diobahn comments on What have PBHers experiences been when they reveal their culinary talents/interests to Colombian friends? In my part of south Louisiana it's the time of year for seafood boils, oysters on the half shell, red snapper on the grill, gumbo with potato salad, cochon du lait done in a cajun microwave. Just imagine fixing any of those in Colombia, much less convincing Colombians that it's Good Eats.......................

diobahn comments on homesick....hungry... comfort food!!! Pasta with Fresh Tomato and Herb Sauce 1/4 cup olive oil 2 to 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 medium onion, chopped 2 lbs. ripe tomatoes, chopped 3 tbsp. tomato paste 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley 1 tsp. chopped fresh oregano 1/2 tsp. chopped fresh thyme 1 tbsp sugar salt and freshly ground pepper to taste 1 lb. dried pasta of your choice, cooked according to package directions (do not rinse) Heat the oil in a large skillet over moderate heat and sauté the onion until limp, then add garlic and sauté for 1 minute. Add the tomatoes and cook until the sauce begins to thicken, about 15 minutes. Stir in the herbs, sugar, salt, and pepper and toss with cooked pasta. Top with grated romano cheese. Serves 4 to 6. I realize that baby may not be ready for all this..........but it's really simple. You may find that the tomatoes will spit and sputter, so have a lid handy.

diobahn comments on Does anyone know a good way to kill algae in a fish pond? I live in rural south-east Louisiana (USA) and have an outdoor pond with koi, fed by artesian well water. I now rely on the algae as a food source for the fish, as I no longer supplement their diet. They are quite large by now. The big problem I have is the marauding Blue Herons who like to swoop down for a snack. That problem has been solved by securing a fine-meshed net over the pond......spoils the atmosphere, but saves the fish. d-

Highly improbable...........you need to take the train from Cuzco to Aguas Calientes, pass the night there (or in the expensive hotel at Machu Picchu).....then from Aguas calientes, take the bus up to MP (or hike if you're fit). It's not a one day deal. You'll have to take the train back to Cusco, then fly back to Lima. Since you're gonna be there, why not enjoy it at your leisure?

diobahn comments on i know there's many lovers of 'ron medellin' out there.... If you check your label again, you'll discover that your rum is ' cuban style', made in the Dominican Republic. Ron Matsusalem has been out of production in Cuba for many years. And, considering the absurd continuing embargo, it's extremely unlikely you would find a Cuban product in American stores. And being successful in getting it into the states is a whole 'nuter ball game. Of course, that has nothing to do with your enjoyment of what you have in hand. ¡buen provecho!
