They stop calling themselves Peter, Mike, John and turn into "Pedro","Miguel" and "Juan El Colombiano" ;)

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on Things expats do to drive you crazy!

Weird....the Colombian men I know never talk about"chicas". I thought it was a special word just reserved for gringos looking for women. Like a taxidriver saying with a sleazy smile: "oye Gringo, do you wanna go to the chicas, I know great place"

Be able to say only one word in Spanish: "chicas"

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on 40% Of Caleños Believe In Witchcraft

"El libro supremo de todas las magias"! This is the book that I had (it had belonged to my husband's grandmother, a very eccentric old lady living in an old wooden house a bit up in the mountains above Cali). It's full of all kinds of formulas, recepies and incantations, to work on your friends and enemies, to obtain wealth or bring economic disaster to your enemies. It was very old and full of termite holes already then and I thought it was totally fascinating as it explained the difference of the different color magics: the white, the red, the green and the black magic. The book was, however, lost, either thrown away by my husband or stolen from our house. I remember reading it while being seriously ill in bed in Cali and some very religious people were telling me that my disease was the work of devil and that I should get rid of the book. Now I know how to get it back!

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on Should I give money at traffic lights?

Oh, ok. I just misunderstood you, just woke up from my siesta and the brain is not really geared into thinking yet. I read "tips" as advice (probably Swedish:) and got this funny image in my mind about you telling the beggars how to invest their earnings as your contribution to the betterment of their economy. I give money to older people, children and handicapped people. I know I'm not helping them, just trying to ease up my conscience, make myself feel a tiny bit better ("there but for the grace of gods"). I don't see how giving them a few coins can hurt them either.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on Should I give money at traffic lights?

You give propinas to people who ask for a hand-out?

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on Should I give money at traffic lights?

Yeah, tips about how the money markets are going to behave in the next 24 hrs, if the dollar is going to hit a new high and how to invest, That's much better than giving them a few coins to buy an arepa.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on 40% Of Caleños Believe In Witchcraft

Haiti, Brasil, Colombia...lots of religious syncretism in fusion religions in all those places, with different names like voodoo, candomblé, santería etc. More recently, West African and Yoruba deities have been analogized with Roman Catholic saints. Religious syncretism is a common phenomenon where a foreign religion has been forced on native populations. Our Scandinavian Christmas is another example of religious syncretism´(the Vikings celebrated a very Pagan Yule at this time of the year)

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on 40% Of Caleños Believe In Witchcraft

Gabriela Clavos y Canela? I LOVE Amado. :) Yes, the idiosyncracies of northwestern Brasil and The Valle del Cauca region of Colombia are closely related: a fusion of Catholicism and African belief systems as produced by the same type of hacienda/plantation economy.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on 40% Of Caleños Believe In Witchcraft

Religious syncretism (fusion) has always been strong in the Valle del Cauca. The Valle del Cauca is one of the most fertile places on this planet (sugarcane yields up to five crops per year) and has been intensily worked by black slaves brought from Africa. Slaves were also used in mining. The Catholic priests took the easy way out: not being able to erradicate the native religions of the Indigenous tribes and the African population became only nominally Christian, resulting in a fusion of the belief systems where witchcraft and animism has always been deeply rooted.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on For all you Anti-Uribe Farc loving bloggers!! Here is what your farc boys do for fun.

YAWN NOBODY is suporting FARC here as far as I can see. There was one, I think, a long time ago reporting from the Colombian mountains, called Condor Lisa Arroz or something like that. I think she was a FARC supporter, or perhaps just pretending to be one. Nobody is blaming Uribe for FARC burning buses in southwestern Nariño. It was just the fifth time this year. Shouldn't there be military patrolls on a road like that? Or perhaps they are needed better protecting paraco agroindustrials visiting their fincas safely every weekend in company of their grilla and prepago "girlfriends"?

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on Davalos twins of Medellin...amazing

Their assembly-line?

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on For all you Anti-Uribe Farc loving bloggers!! Here is what your farc boys do for fun.

Mitch, the few years before Uribe were bad, yes, very bad. The rise of the drug culture in the early eighties was perhaps the single main ingredient that damaged Colombia most, that and the extermination of the opposition (legal, democratic opposition) by asassins bullets combined with weak and corrupt administrations. The murder of Galan epitomized the reign of narco-terror in Colombia and the guerrilla grew strong in its jungle strongholds and forgot the reason why they were out there and converted itself to bunch or merciless ruffians and terrorists. Uribe has been given mandate to exterminate them which he hasn't been able to do; a year ago it looked like the end of a period would be near, but the guerrilla is rallying up again and gaining ground. Personally I was hoping to be able to return to live in Colombia at least part-time, Colombia in peace and without the FARC but it isn't happening, looks like not in my lifetime, hopefully in yours. I'm afraid, however, that Colombia will not be guerrilla-free unless something else is going to happen, some structural changes that favor the majority, the unpriviledged people of Colombia. Don't ask me how, I only know why.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on Davalos twins of Medellin...amazing

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on Dar(n) PBH is a Yawn the last few days

There isn't anything anybody can say that isn't already said. Bias? Unless we as a team are all drinking some miracle potion from the same bottle that makes us basically clones of each other, then no, there may be individual bias but not group bias. At least that's what I think. Uneven? Perhaps. Nobody is perfect.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on Another reason, why the people in Colombia don`t like Piedad Cordoba

"él se ha echado el proceso de los que estamos planteando otra propuesta diferente al neoliberalismo”, ??? There are plenty of people in Colombia who don't support neoliberal economical policies either and are not Chavez supporters. I'm pretty sure (without having read a word of what Cordoba says about this incident) the heinous crime committed by terrorists of the FARC in Nariño is not supported by either Chavez or Cordoba.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on Colombians arround the world

There are 8000 Colombia-born persons living legally in Sweden, 7000 of them adopted from Colombia. The Chileans are the largest group of Latinamericans in Sweden. (28000) (the statistic is a bit old, from 2005. but there has not been any sizeable increase in immigration from Colombia in the last few years)

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on For all you Anti-Uribe Farc loving bloggers!! Here is what your farc boys do for fun.

This was the fifth time the Farc criminals burned a bus on this same route to Tumaco, this year. I guess the life is these poor campesinos is less worth than Uribe's paraco cronies who can now safely visit their luxurious fincas and agroindustrial plantations without fear for the greatly increased security implemented by their good friend. Tio Alvaro. Colombia is truly a f...up country.

I'm not offended by a pair of breasts. As far as I know most women have those. Apply your experience on prudishness on people who's idiosyncracy is known to you.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on Time to put Colombia high on the list, Beautiful People

Nah, that's not it, Rubito. Shorter life expectancy and higher fertility rate are the classical makings of a country with Colombia's demography curve.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on Time to put Colombia high on the list, Beautiful People

Colombia is a country of young people. people who grow up fast, reach physiological maturity at a young age and start wilting at an age when women of northern latitudes are starting second families and a new career.. The retirement age is lower than here because the old age and infirmity creep on people of the tropics sooner and the life expectancy is shorter. That's one reason for the excessive popularity of plastic operations; that and the natural vanity of latin people. Of course, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder and Colombian can be very attractive people (both men and women) but when you remove all makeup and hair extensions and implants and high heels and pushups the Colombiana is about average compared internationally. Especially when she reaches the middle age or beyond that.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on How do you call the letter V

Que horas son? is often used when you expect the answer be in plural too. Like "son las tres", "Que hora es?" is correct.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on How do you call the letter V

I was taught it's uv in Cali. I've also heard v pequeño o v corto (or just v de vaca), but I think they teach uv in schools. W is often (?) called doble u in Cali schools. It may well be a mistake or an anglicism.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on 2-way ignore

That thread has been very heavily edited, it's hard to say. It does not look like the thread that got MaBarker in trouble; more like the thread that motivated anti, sapo, johann and huskey's suspensions. Goin_south...it was actually worse than that. But he has apologized like a gentleman. It's water under the bridge.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on 2-way ignore

Raaay...what's the url to that thread?

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on 2-way ignore

No Raaay, Darloup has NEVER stooped that low. But flatline,I forgive you and we'll forget this incident just like we did the other one. You don't know ANYTHING about me except what I have chosen everybody to know; but you obviously have your own issues to battle with. We all have our own burdens to bear. Darloup, Brians, Greg and a lot of people all have one problem in common: I'm sure you all are really great guys but you all focus on the PEOPLE here on PBH, not on the issues. Hey.let's have heated discussions about just about anything, but step back when people are getting personal.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on 2-way ignore

It was even worse than that, kat. He edited it quickly but you can see it in deleted comments.I'm putting it behind me now, but this was not the first time he has offended me in a very ugly way.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on 2-way ignore

CG, "old, bitter, menopausal mods" ; who do you think flatline had in mind? Britney Spears? Clavo et al: Brians wanted to get out. Sometimes I think we should follow the example of other sites that say that anything posted there becomes the property of the site and cannot be removed at will. We don't have a rule that says that only intelligent, articulate people with excellent command of the English language should be allowed to post here. Also, we don't run popularity contests here or let the crowd decide who gets to stay and who gets to go. We try to answer all mails we get and try to be as fair as we possibly can. I've been here for ten years now and seen lots of excellent posters come and go. For a lot of reasons.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on 2-way ignore

That was fast editing, flatline.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on 2-way ignore

I don't really get it. Why would you be mad? It must be a great relief for you not to be able to read Greg's comments, the same for Greg. You guys have been at this on this forum, on Cblog and gods only know where else. There's bad chemistry, bad vibes there and I don't see why you consider yourself as the victim as you seek him out on every forum about Colombia in the internet. Greg, this is my last word to you and if this double block does not work and you continue to attack Brians through proxies I will have to suspend your posting priviledges. I could have done this in private, but I choose to tell you in public so that everybody can read this and this has to stop here NOW.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on 2-way ignore

Stop worrying Brians. You'll still have us mods to deal with. :) We cannot be ignored nor can ignore.

Desideria (Moderator) (Trustee board) comments on entire Colombian football team killed by ELN

ELN is not Hugo´s pet group: methinks that we just don't know enough of this story to be able to guess which murderous thugs did what. The truth may well be surprisingly simple. Either the maniceros were paracos, murdered by ELN or they were elenos murdered by paracos or perhaps just pawns in a deadly dirty war or even the Venezuelan variant of falsos positivos.
