Hi Desi, have put you on as a friend as you are often the first to respond to my posts. Cheers!!!

Hi Desi, it's been awhile since I've been on this site, I know. But I thought I would check in and see how you were doing. Good to see you're still around PBH. Take care now.

Hello Desi,

When are you planning on returning to Colombia? Susan and I are due back in mid November.

Woodyyyyy good to see you. You lucky guys, I'm stuck here can't retire yet and have no money for an extensive stay. It won't be before next summer at the earliest. I've rented out my house to a nursery home and still need to change the piping and the floors, but it'll have to wait.
Cheers,
Desi

fricken technology.......(*&*&^%^&%$%#@) i have a $3,000.00 lap top from hp and i'm having problems with it.....pain in the arse.

sorry i havent been communicative lately....just that these internal plumbing problems (age) and i'm sore, drugged up and basically bummed out. i'm anything but a dooms day soothsayer. it's just that all these medical issues, in and out of the hospital, etc just really bring me down.

we had hoped of moving back and living full time in our own home (envigado) but our youngest daughter just won a scholarship to the most exclusive private catholic high school in the u.s and that means.....four more years here. argh! she also wants to enter the diplomatic corps and that means the univ.of georgetown in washington d;c. that is if she wants to be a serious contender for advancement in the corps. also, georgetown is a catholic university, so her present position in fr. lopez is a guarantee of acceptance in to the univ's diplomatic program. she's a 98% high achiever and she'll--i'm certain--get into georgetown on scholarship as well.

anyway, after she finishes h.s. mom and i are outta here. she can live with her oldest brother and his family in washington d.c. mom and i are going home. i don't know how much more time our precious COMMON FATHER will allow me on this earth, regardless, i'd just like to drop my physical form in colombia, in my bed, in the finca. like e e cummings said, "i'm an old man, in a dry month, being read to by a boy, waiting for rain."

nuff said.

lots of love to you and all the best. too, thanks for your friendship these last 6-8 years.

Desideria says on Monday September 24th, 2007 12:19:

Douglas, I had no idea that you had been ailing and spent so much time at hospitals. I had a little of that too. last year, problems with the plumbing:) but am fine now. Sounds like your youngest is the apple of her father's eye and you're a pretty proud dad...I've got a bit of cheerful family news too, I'm a proud abuela now, my daughter's got a lovely little boy, now 14 months old.

I've also been retained here and had to shelf my original Desi's B&B plans for the time being, partially because my health but mainly because I want to bond with my grandchild at that age when he clearly enjoys seeing me and recognizes even my voice on the phone. One more reason is my elderly Mum who's got Alzheimers but still remembers me at the age of 88.
Thank YOU, Douglas for your friendship, ours is one of older ones here and dates back to ColombiaExperts and last millenium.
All my best to you and your loved ones,
hugs,
Maarit

I do remember now about the B&B. Too bad that it's on the shelf for now. I really hope your mom does ok. I wish you the best.
Take care,
Dan

Desideria says on Tuesday September 25th, 2007 9:26:

Thanks Dan :)
My niece just came from Finland on her way back to USA and said that my Mum speaks about me all the time. My two sisters take care of her, but I'm the one she thinks about and I just see her perhaps twice or three times a year. The mind and the memory of our elderly loved ones are sometimes very strange.

I see in some of your comments, you know Buenaventura quite well. I would be interested to know your observations there. I lived there for two years so I have an interest in other peoples views on the town and its problems

Desideria says on Saturday September 29th, 2007 13:32:

I can't really say that I KNOW Buenaventura at all. We made day trips from Cali to Buenaventura all the time, went to the beaches of Juanchaco and Ladrilleros, but that was a long time ago. I feel for the the people of the puerto and think that they've got the short end of the deal; it's a shame that a country's main export port and main port on the Pacific does not get more help in sorting out its problems. B/ventura was never pretty but now it's both ugly and lethal. Yes, I speak for Buenaventura and for the whole Pacific region on the region; mostly because it's the home of some of the gentlest and most hospitable people I've ever known in my life. (Besides that, they used to cook the best sancocho de pescado on the second floor of the galeria de Buenaventura...you had to make it first past the vilest smells of the ground level and up the rickety stairs....)

Hyvää Joulua Desi to you and yours! Will be missing a White Christmas this year, it's going to be my first Christmas in Barranquilla in a long, long time and I'm really looking forward to it. Esko is coming from Finland to spend it with Hanna and the grandchildren, I'm glad.

The last time I went to Findland? so long ago, 20 years or so, when we were living in Rome.

I hope you can make it back this summer, and get to see each other. Take care.

Is it fair to say that Sweden y Finnland, were joined at the hip for a while? (in history)

There's no time to panic !!!

Desideria says on Saturday December 29th, 2007 1:47:

Finland was part of the Swedish kingdom from about 1100 until 1809 when Napoleon made a deal wit Alexander I and Finland was included in the package. For two years we tried to stop them at our eastern border but Sweden was weakened finally Finland was ceded over to Russians and became an autonomous grand duchy under the rule of the tsars. Ironically, this was the first time the Finns had any sorts of autonomy and self-government, Alexander I was one of those enlightened rulers and the Finnish nationalism was actually born during those hundred years of Russian rule. It was not until the Bear got meaner (under Nikolaj II) and we got a general governor Bobrikov who wanted to russify Finland and prohibit us using our own language and BS stuff like that so we revolted against the Russians in 1917, at the convenient time of the October Revolution in Russia.
