Two "incidents" I did have in Cali Two "incidents" I did have during a recent trip in Cali:


1) while having lunch in a restaurant in the centre near Torre de Cali I heard gunshots. Before hiding in the kitchen of the restautant I saw a motor cop shooting at a car speeding away. He was aiming to hit. Strange was that all trafic in the street just drove on. Few minutes after the shooting everything was back to normal.
Also strange that everyone in the restaurant assured me that the quarter was very safe ("este barrio es muy seguro").


2) In one bar also not far from La Sexta there were a bunch of yelling Colombians. Suddenly comes in a guy telling that the police is coming in. In a second everybody disappeared through an alternate exit. Kind of panic. After the police went away the guys who disappeared came back. And they took out the guns they had hidden under the seats of the chairs. I went away. Don't like the combination of guns, liqor, yelling at each other.


I heard that in Cali you certainly should NOT go to the following quarters :
* in centro the San Nicolas, El Clavario and Barrio Obrero. The rest of centro is also not safe at night.
* also don't go to Siloe (south, not far from Calle 5) and Aqua Blanco (also south).


I didn't visit Juanchito, the famous disco area just outside town. I, as a Gringo didn't want to go alone to that area (safety) and couldn't find a reliable Colombian guide.

According to "Foorprint": north of the river and not too far from la Sexta.
And a reasonable price.

I have now idea what happens to a Gringa who goes to live in Colombia. But I can't imagine she will ever be able to turn into a Latina. My theory is once a gringa always a gringa.

Even here in Europ.
Still it is true that in South America there is more dishonesty.
Although it also has its charming aspects.
I can remember in South America I stayed 1 week with a family.
I did ask them what they wanted for me staying and for the food they gave me. They didn't want anything. However on some occasions there came inspectors from the government inspecting the house and asking for money that I had to provide. I am pretty shure it was a theatre to make me pay. It was amusing and very good theatre. But if they had just asked me normally I would have payed more.

For a short holiday 3 to 4 days of dating is a lot of time.
And then, suppose you get lucky after 4 days.
Does the woman expect more of you???

I am not the relation kind of person. I am very afraid of relations.
That is why I prefer to pay. Paying makes things clear.
I don't want to disapoint a woman who, after dating and sex, expects a relation with me.

More thoughts on Cuba Maimimike I agree with you that a lot of US-governments didn't handle Castro that smart. But you must not forget that Cuba is a police state.
No one in Cuba can make an honest live without starving to death.
Everybody has to do illegal things. And the Cuban authorities do exactly know what illegal things everybody is doing to survive. If they feel like it they will use the things they know about you against you. And then they are very hard. For instance taking away houses from people that have rented illegal to foreigners. Or putting women in jail for serveral years that have been seen with foreigners. They have no mercy.
I have to agree with Tomtom that in Havana there is the possibility of being robbed. Not as save as everybody thinks. Although I have walked the city on many occasions in the the darkest hours of the night (3:00 AM). Mostly felt save then.

Chicks more easy in Cuba or Colombia? Yes, Cuba is pretty save, as it is a police-state.
And because the people spy on each other. For this spying they have the CDR's (CDR = Commitee para Defensar la Revolution).

Problem with chicks in Cuba is the police.
Prostitution is forbidden. Chicas who are seen with foreigners are registered. Three registrations and they end up in jail for a few years.
Most prostitutes that still can be found have relations with the police (pay money or pay with services).

I have been in Rio. Nice city, althoug a bit commercial.
I almost never felt in endangered in Rio.
But at night I only walked around in Ipanema (not in Copacaban and not in Centro).
In the evening I mainly took taxi's.
That, although I like very much walking around in a town.

I want to visit Colombia.
Not the costal cities like Cartagena and Baranquilla, but Cali - Bogota - Medelin.
I speak some Spanish (studying hard) and look like a gringo.
Questions:
1) For the ones who visited Rio: do you agree that Cali-Bogota-Medelin are "more save" than Rio (yes/no)?
2) Is it possible to walk around save in Cali-Bogota-Medelin at night in the areas where the night life is?
3) Are taxi's safe in Colombia?

Albatros is right. Especially high-class prostitues have a very high income.
If they don't like their work why aren't they working in a shop or something simular.
Of course there is human tragedy in prostitution.
Old women or women with children who offer their body for practically nothing.
But there are quite a lot of good looking, healhty, young women that work as a prositute. They can have another job. But they like the money and the luxury.
What bothers me most is that especially gringas opposite things like this. Thank God there are still real Latinas in this world. I am happy that a live right. In 20 years also South America will be Americanized and there will not be any real Latinas anymore.
