dave_travels comments on dating colombian girl

She could be a good girl or she could be bad. Since you are new to travelling outside of North America, it will be easy for you to fall for this girl. Stay in a hotel until you get your feet wet. If you find yourself buying her girlfriend's dinner also on the first date...be aware!

dave_travels comments on dating colombian girl

Yes. Be very afraid of her getting her hooks into you and you not ever wanting to return home again.

dave_travels comments on What the hell is a Ojo and why cant you get wet after ironing clothes.

"Mal de ojo" is equivalent to "evil eye". The red thread is for protection and it is called "aseguranza" and it is to protect you from "mal de ojo" and other illnesses. Yes, it is a cross between B/S, wife's tales, folklore, and some truth. The problem with Colombians is Envy and their envy is what makes the child sick. Mothers try to protect the child with the folklore.

dave_travels comments on Is there cheap shopping in San Andres?

Yes, what they sell in those duty free stores is cheaper than mainland Colombia. However, their prices are still higher than the very same products sold in Canada at your local Walmart, or London Drugs.

dave_travels comments on She's definitely coming to Canada now...?

Those Language schools usually do not give the tuition back unless you show them the denial letter from the Embassy in Bogota. (move to Colombia for a year with money u will make in the oil sands).

dave_travels comments on hostal in providencia

Hotel Flaming Tree I stayed at hotel Flaming Tree. The owner is very nice. It is a good value and has a great view from the "Cangrejo suite". It is acroos from the hospital and just up from the store where you can rent motorbikes for 50,000 per 24 hours.

dave_travels comments on Divorce or Abandonment?

You have a very valid point Mr. H. There is a temptation to abandon a lying, cheating wife as payback, so she can not get her hooks into another foreigner and marry her way out of the country. But it could come back and bite me in the ass in the long run.

dave_travels comments on Divorce or Abandonment?

She has never been outside Colombia Married in Colombia and she has not been outside of Colombia. She does not have any status in Canada, therefore she can not use Canadian divorce laws. One must be a resident of Canada to initiate the use of Canadian divorce law. I only seek info on the divorce laws of Colombia.

dave_travels comments on Bus robbery story

wife robbed on bus to Barranquilla On her way to the Shakira concert, my wife took the bus from Santa Marta to Barranquilla. The drivers picked up travellers on the hwy. One of then distracted my wife by saying he "dropped his glasses on the floor...look out for them". The other opened her purse and took her wallet.

dave_travels comments on CANADA EMBASSY BOGOTA

it is possible to track, but not useful if they don't do anythin click this link and you can see your status after you enter your case number. However, it will not decrease the frustration one experiences when one is separated from their loved ones.

Bring a windbreaker and long pants. Went up to the hot springs there in September and if it is raining, you will need a sweatshirt, windbreaker and long pants.

dave_travels comments on ATM's in Colombia

I use RBC Centura (Royal Bank of Canada) while in Colombia. RBC Centura bank is based in the Carolinas and is also an internet bank. US or Canadian residents can own account there. Withdrawals are free at ANY bank, inside or outside North America.

dave_travels comments on HAS ANYONE BOUGHT FLIGHT TICKETS ONLINE FOR COLOMBIAN DOMESTIC FLIGHTS?

had to pay for my ticket when I arrived in Colombia I bought tickets online in June using "veri-sign", or what ever it is called, and it worked great. However in September I could not pay with a credit card and had to pay for my ticket when I arrived in Colombia. Yes, they agreed to keep the reservation until I arrived at the airport in Colombia. I called the 800 number in the states and its puts you through to Colombia.

dave_travels comments on Divorce

If you are married abroad, you can still divorce in the USA provided that one of you lived in that state for at least 3 months. Your spouse does not even need to show up provided it is uncontested and she correctly signs all the paperwork.

dave_travels comments on Definitely Moving to Santa Marta!

couple of towers on Rodadero beach There are a couple of new tower at the very west end of Rodadero beach. There are a couple of teacher that already stay there. The teachers told me they pay $450 USD for these high-rise condos on the ocean. Long term renter do get these affordable prices. If you want to stay in SM, it will be much cheaper, but stay in a estrata 4 or better neighbourhood. In Mamatoco (near Buena Vista Mall), a judge's house was shot at a couple of days ago. That Judge is still pretty shook up.

dave_travels comments on Santa Marta safe ????

Also Blonde and 6'3" and had no problems I am also Blonde and 6'3" and had no problems. I have been there three times in the 9 months. Absolutely no problems. However, my bedtime is usually 10:30pm so I do not know what happens after that. I did see something strange from my hotel room in June (in Rodadero)at 4 AM when a group of 20+ people were following and surrounding a foreigner who was with a hooker. So I assume if you are not walking with a hooker you might be ok.

One can take Puerta y Puerta service from Barranquilla or Cartagena to Santa Marta and it is safe. The road between Barranquilla and Santa Marta is safe because it runs along a narrow isthmus. One would have to be amphibious to escape after committing a crime on this road. The puerta y puerta services all have radios and are in contact with each other.

dave_travels comments on Anyone been to Tairona recently?

Was there on June 8th Main entrance still has the Yellow Fever inoculation requirement sign, but they do not enforce it. Restaurant at the main beach and a small makeshift restaurant at the beach near the gazebo. Mules for hire to pack your stuff in near the place where the truck drops you off.

dave_travels comments on three week and counting

Start at Plaza de Bolivar. There is a tourist information office at the south west corner of the plaza. They will give you a good map for free.

The above is the site for the easier way for a Philipina to obtain residency in Canada (other than marriage).

dave_travels comments on Transit Visa via USA, England, France or Spain

I do know it costs $100 to apply.

dave_travels comments on marraige in colombia with only a passport?

fill out the application for marriage before you leave You can easily extend your visa at the DAS for 30 days. Notaries are usually busy and may not be able to marry you that quickly. You can also marry at the municiple court if their strike is over. It is quicker but you will need to furfil the same documentation requirements. If you choose to marry on your next trip, be sure to sign the marriage application before you leave Colombia; it will save you from doing one more notorized translated document.

dave_travels comments on DON'T MEET 125 % OF POVERTY

Consider returning to work. Consider returning to work until she is in the country. If she had income, they can include that in the evaluation (even though it will be little).

Any bank funds or equity in a house will also help. (forget the car and the boat).

dave_travels comments on

Permanent Residents can bring spouses in, just takes longer. Permanent Residents can bring spouses in, it just takes longer. Spouses of Permanent Residents get "Priorty Numbers" while spouses of US citizens jump the "Priorty Number" queue. If you get your citizenship while you are waiting (and you likely won't), they will bump you up to the faster queue.

dave_travels comments on Inflated prices for ST rental in Rodadero

Yes, a bus is 7000 pesos. However, "Puerta y Puerta" service is that they pick you up at your home or hotel and drop you at your home or hotel in your destination city. No need to be a target at the bus station. It is 25000 pesos unless you are able to wave down an empty car at the end of town, thus again exposing you as a target. It is also always interesting to see the luxury homes of those you share the car with.

dave_travels comments on Inflated prices for ST rental in Rodadero

Many other coutries have better beaches If you want good beaches, go to Thailand or Western Australia. If you want to play your guitar on the beach, go to La Barra de Navidad, just north of Manzanillo (you will have competition from the hippies though).

If you want to avoid the whole English speaking world, have a few Aguilas on the beach, and still have a chance at meeting a nice LaSamarian to be your future wife, go to Rodadero. Keep in mind, the FARC, in civilian clothes, do exist in Santa Marta.

It is safe to take "port to port" service (includes about three companies) between the cities of Santa Marta, Barranquilla and Cartagena. It costs 25000 pesos per person, and three hours of your time, to go between Barranquilla and either of the other two cities.

dave_travels comments on GREEN CARD RIGHTS?

positive and negative aspects. Some protection of the law and rights are only afforded to US citizens. Unlike you however, while she is without US citzenship, she is not required to file or pay US income tax on that investment of yours while she is a Non-resident of the USA.

dave_travels comments on Buying Avianca tickets online for travel within Colombia?

It went well for me I purchased a Colombian domestic ticket in Feb. for myself online while still in Canada. I paid in pesos with my credit card. I jumped through the hoops online, and then printed out the boarding pass at an internet cafe in Bogota the night before I left. All the Avianca people looked at my boarding pass with a surprised look, but they all accepted it. I did the same for the return trip too. If you book 7 days in advance, you get a cheaper price. They state all there rules & regs. in the fine print.

I have not attempted to purchase a ticket for another person yet.

dave_travels comments on Question about Colombia?

Naive or pretending to be Naive? Sometimes I do not know if people are joking or if they are really st....

It will take you more than a week to arange to have your vehicle shipped from Panama to Colombia. It will probably take another week to get it on the boat. Then it will take at least week before you can pick it up at the docks in Colombia. I met a couple of backpackers during their negotiations to ship their vehicles out of Colon to Equador and I think they were splitting the cost of a container. It is not cheap unless you are putting motorbikes on a banana boat.

dave_travels comments on Places to marry in Cartagena

Have the wedding on the wall. I was walking around the Centro on a recent Saturday night and noticed that someone was haveing a private party on the wall just east of the south entrance. Perhaps you can have the wedding there. The security is pretty good because thay would only let guests through the gate to go on the wall.

dave_travels comments on warning for Canadians....

Steve,,,,,is that 7 months since you submitted your sponsorship Steve. Is that 7 months since you submitted your sponsorship application in Canada? Did they request for any missing information after that?

I am sort of expecting to wait at least seven months from the sponsorship application.

On my first experience with the process in 89. It took 13 months to get the visa (fortunately spouse was in Canada). Still, I was so frustrated that I ended up shouting and screaming in front of a 100 people in the waiting room of the immigration office in Surry BC. They then processed her visa within an hour. That was my first confirmation that maybe sometimes "the squeeky wheel gets the grease".

dave_travels comments on Difficulty with cell phone calls

I believe it is the long distance service that is the problem I occasionally get that problem (she uses "Hola"), but I believe it is the long distance service that is the problem. Calls to cell phones are more expensive for your long distance carrier than calls made to land-lines.

dave_travels comments on Marrying in Colombia, requirements

I am seeking any Canadians that got married on San Andres Island I am seeking any Canadians that got married in SAI and have started the Immigration process with the Canadian government. I am curious on how the process is going.

The lawyer on the other side of the window at the Canadian Embassy gave me some very serious advise about SAI. Should there be any problem with the marriage certificate, one's spouse may become inadmissable. I wonder if there has been any other Canadians that have broken trails with the immigration process with a "made in SAI" marriage certificate? I am getting cold feet about SAI.

dave_travels comments on Canadian govt's latest travel advisory for Colombia

If you hail a taxi on the street, then... If you decide to hail a taxi on the street in a coastal city, be sure their windows are closed. That way you know the A/C works. If the A/C works, it is a better car and a more reputable driver. A trick I learned from mi Colombiana.

dave_travels comments on new type of visa?

dave_travels comments on Tax questions: American working in Colombia

It depends where your income comes from If you live in a country outside the US, and will be there 365 days or more(there is other criteria also)you are US tax exempt for more than 70K of income earned in that other country. (The amount changes every year.) However if your income is still derived from the USA (even though you live outside the US), then you still have to pay US tax on it. The IRS will send you a large foreign resident package if you ask for it. Your state taxes are generally based on what you declare on your federal return. If you return to live in the USA, you can not elect foreign resident status for tax puposes for another 5 years.

dave_travels comments on Cartagena Hotels

Hotel San Franscico at 55,000. It is easy to find when you return from the suburbs by bus. The buses all go near it. Choose the 8th floor. Suites are a bit better and the view is better too. Good Chinese restaurant right next to it.

It is at the north end of Centro.

dave_travels comments on new yorker in cartagena

Hotel San Fransico or Hotel Viajero Hotel San Fransico is a good value at 50K/70K pesos (one person/two persons).
Hotel Viajero is 30K pesos but is less comfortable. Hostals will be cheaper.

dave_travels comments on What to do now?

Did you know.... Did you know that if you get killed in the line of duty in Iraq or such a hot zone, your wife would automatically become a US citizen?

Your situation is the unfortunate circumstance where the law, of the USA, presumes everyone wants to live in the US.

On the other hand, it is illegal for an official in the Canadian government to "form an opinion" as to whether you are able to support your wife. That is, a Canadian still has to sign the support forms, and show income, but can NEVER be turned down for support reasons when sponsoring his wife (he can be turned down sponsoring other family members though)

You will have to work 40 or more hours a week to get that income up, or start teaching English in Colombia.

dave_travels comments on Support Affidavit ?

Yes you need Tax forms. I do not think you are at the last step. It sounds like she recieved the list of missing documents. You need to prove the ability to support the new immigrant(s)in addition to any others that depend on you. If you have a very large bank account (100K plus), that will work, otherwise you have to prove your income. You need tax forms for the past three years (something official that shows your income for each of the three years). If you did not file, you have to file or you have to explain why you are not required to file (L&I benefits or low income are potential reasons). You need to prove that you are above the income threshold to support the number of dependants that will be relying on you.

If you did not have enough income in the past three years to surpass the threshold, then you will need a co-sponsor and the co-sponsor will need to prove the ability to support the immigrant. They will be on the hook for ten years.

dave_travels comments on Canada - document showing civil marriage status

Statement In-Lieu of Certificate of Non-Impediment to Marriage China required a statement that I was single also. The Canadian Embassy in Beijing gave me a "Statement In-Lieu of Certificate of Non-Impediment to Marriage Abroad" that satisfied the Chinese requirement. That was in 1989. I see that the Departments of Foreign Affairs and International Trade will do the same when in Canada. I suspect that the Canadian Embassy in Bogota can produce the same document.

dave_travels comments on Visas 101

She will not likely get a tourist visa and here is reason. US Law decides if she can get a visa, not the Embassy. The Embassy only decides if the law has been met. She has to prove that she will leave the US. She can try to show this by having a job in Colombia or better yet, her child is still in Colombia. However, at one of her interviews, or in the visa application, she probably let it slip that she has a boyfriend in USA. It will be very difficult to overcome this on any later application to prove she will not marry the boyfriend when she is in the US. Perhaps try a student visa or Fiancee visa. She could get a tourist visa two years later if she travels with another Colombian friend, or only has female friends in the US.

dave_travels comments on FIRST WARNING

You must be on file US Homeland security must have you on file. Your answers to the questions are unbelieveable. I would not let you in, and I am a Canadian too. I also had long lay-overs in Housten with Contenental airlines. But I told the truth; it is the cheapest ticket and I am using airmiles. Back up your answers with documents. The obligation is on YOU to prove that you will not stay in the US and work. Because you do not have a job in Canada, he assumed that you will get off that plane in Housten and work in the US.

I was a smart-ass once in LAX and I paid the price with a strip search with two big Bubbas. Now INS/Homeland Security gets my highest respect and the most sincere answers.
