creamontop comments on Immigration TO Colombia

It looks quiet easy to apply for a visa in a Colombian consulate (I'm not talking about costs of anything) Just... it is not very clear if it is "necessary" (as stated on the form) to HAVE an address beforehand in Colombia where you will reside. Usually when you would go to Colombia to find a job or to remain permanently you start off at a hotel or something similar. Does anybody thinks it would be appropriate to fill in a hotel address in this form ?

Just type into google : embajada de colombia en Canada and off you go !!

Here is the link : http://www.embajadacolombia.ca/

creamontop comments on Retirement Visa

Is this for USA Citizens only ? I read this quiet special and interesting subject. As I would consider to retire in Colombia some day later in life. 1800 US monthly is this for US citizens only ? I cannot find this information anywhere. I have been looking to websites of embassies in europe and none states the amount one should receive in order to be legally valid to receive a temporary pensionada visa. Only the visa is granted for a period of 1 year at once is information available.

creamontop comments on Air Madrid from bogota

To where are you heading : Bogota to ...? "Hi does anyone know why you can't do online reservations for Air Madrid any more from Bogota??" NOPE I dont know....

"I want to check out some prices but it's not letting me? Are they still running the flights?" Yep I think so.....

standby flights can be OK, but it is playing with fire. You put yourself on a leash, "they" will tell you "when" you can fly. I would not recommend it.

What is your destination ? Bogota to ..... ? Maybe I can give you an alternative for Air Madrid.

creamontop comments on Colombian Culture - Women

there is not much to add to what is written by dwmte I think you stated what it is all about dwmte.

"i feel like since i didn't discover the colombian woman in bars and clubs," + "of colombians not had by the usual visitor to this wonderful country."

Too many people only meet such woman inside cities, clubs and bars. That is maybe only 5 % of the woman of the complete population in Colombia. Another "chunk" meet normal woman but treat or see them like the woman in bars and clubs.

It is everywhere the same in the world. People living in cities are different from people living on the land/countryside. You have to deal with a different mentallity. And cultural differences occur inside one country this way. A country girl is not a city girl. (Or she must have seen too much soap on TV and adapted to such a lifestyle).
Like stated by dwmte :
"in the cities, you certainly have those who are partially if not totally driven by striving to 'come up the ladder'."

But most in the countryside remain "down to earth" and give different values to life and its expectations.

Like stated by dwmte :
"but in the country, it has been my experience that both men and women seek little more than a good, safe, loving life that they can share with the one they choose to spend their life with. they don't have eyes on the sky, nor are they "gold diggers". hardly, they are humble, loving and caring people who want/seek what is right in life. both for themselves and their families. to hope for a comfortable life is really nothing out of the ordinary...neither in colombia nor in any other country. it is human nature."

........ I could not say it better !!

Find out for yourself guys. Quiet easy to know the way how she reacts when you tell her : I'm not rich, I'm unemployed or I cannot afford to bring with me a big present for you.

When you get a reaction :
I dont want you to be rich, i want you to love me, that will be your wealth you give me.
I will find work and we share what we have
I do not neet a big present, a man that only has eye for me will be my biggest present.

you can bet you found yourself a true woman. It can be found everywhere it is "universal". Only... the chances are quiet "higher" you will find her in Colombia, and more likely in the countryside (I guess, and will find out soon) :-)
And unfortunately more inside the woman with a mentality as before the feminist revolution.... .

creamontop comments on items confisgated from mail

sending into Colombia I have sent twice a package to Colombia

1st time to a girlfriend in Bogota : package address was her working address. package arrived, never opened everything OK

2nd time to a girlfriend in Cali : package address was her private home address. Package never arrived ;-)

Both times I used regular public postal/mail system, so no express mail or specially secured private/mail delivery company.

I wont send any packages anymore to private addresses, corporate addresses seem fine as those in charge of "handling" the packages will not be tempted very easy to open those. Just make sure the company name is on the package. and underneath put the name of the person that has to get the package. ;-)

Otherwise use Federal Express, United Parcel Services, DHL, or whatever : but pay the price !

I dont know IF "they" (customs-shippers-handlers inside Colombia) will open those packages (send through Fed Ex, UPS, DHL, ...). The chances are more low, compared to public service mail system employees. Also in regards of custom handling. Using a private mail system is either working for them and obeying to corporate rules, or getting fired. Also psychologically : customs have a bigger time in loosing face and credibility towards a company compared to a private person receiving a package. ;-)
In any case I would never send jewelry, quiet expensive or special value items through any mailing system towards Colombia. The temptations makes the thiefs.

Concerning sendings out of colombia I have no clue ???? I think a private mailing system would be the best option. and again send it to a private company address.

creamontop comments on Computer and internet costs in Cali

Viewpoint Well I know shuttles, they wont fit into my suitcase haha !! my suitcase is a polyester shell (you know what i mean), Besides I have been looking on "mercadolibre" in colombia. Afterall, When taking a carefull look on this website (similar to our well known Ebay). I guess it does not worth the pain to hassle it with me to colombia on the airplane. I found complete new systems for 690,000 Pesos. (without the monitor though) have a look http://articulo.mercadolibre.com.co/MCO-3132435--_JM

I guess I will travel "light" :-)

creamontop comments on Computer and internet costs in Cali

TO VIEWPOINT :

I will install windows XP PRO in spanish, here in my country. No problem finding it over internet ;-)
The fact is I can pre-build a whole system on my own. For a fraction of the price most people
would pay for a complete system purchased in retail. so why should I bother buying a complete
computer in a retail service ? also taking into mind I can put in everything I want.
I am doing this for my self now about over 15 years. It saved me a lot of money. You pay 1500 dollar for a running fully equiped system.
I will pay +/- 750 for the same, because i am doing everything myself. So put it this way, my airplane ticket is already paid because I invest into some work. :-)
I agree la mama will miss the local support (in case of need). I will reduce the "need" as much as possible.
So in the event she will have a "need" for support it will worth the efforts to pay for it. Maybe this sounds "cheap" to you, for me it sounds "economically" fair trade.

Everything will be pre-configured, disassembled and go into my suitcase. I only need to buy in Cali a monitor, a keyboard and a case to fit everything in. As it will not fit into my suitcase.
In the event some parts are less expensive in Cali, I will buy those parts as well in Cali. That is the reason of this post.

I really appreciate the comment, though it would help me a lot more when you would state hard facts about prices of what you said.

TO EXPATRIATE

Thanks for the website. I have been on it. I have seen they have other "hogar" options. 83,000 Pesos is too much to handle on a monthly bases for me and certainly for those poor folks. Besides they are no technology geeks, so the phoneline that will come into the house very soon will be a simple phoneline the landlord has granted. When the computer will be there, they will have to understand the phone will not work when they log on the internet. And be happy with a webcam and type what they want to say to each other. I believe this is (for those people) already revolutionary enough. I presume (like ROCINANTE) stated 3 hours phoning for 30 $ is for cellular phones. so I just hope landlines are not more expensive in usage for internet dial up.

Expatriate my question was : Is there an ATM inside or close to "la Pasarela" ? I have probably not correctly put my question about this. I am aware there are many ATM's in Cali. And yes to purchase goods that are inside a shop (without IVA declarations from the vendor side) it is indeed necessary to pay them with cash (grins, jaja !!)

Pantip Plaza is computer heaven in Bangkok. For all interested in buying the latest state of the art for a low price, this is a must to visit. You will certainly gain back your travel costs. In the meantime you can enjoy "other" beauties ;-) (also for a fraction of common prices jajaja !!! )

creamontop comments on Computer and internet costs in Cali

some comments and furhter questions TO CASLUG :
Ok no unilimited internet. Sigh.... So I will be looking for something like a dial up connection.
Any idea how much it will cost ? Lets say for 1 hour online ? Or do they give monthly rates ?
total packages of downstream/upstream ? I have heard from a girl in Bogotà she pays about
like she wrties it "65.000 mas iva" for 128K (but constantly online) no dial up, off course this is Bogotà.

TO ROCINANTE :
I understand phoning is not expensive in Colombia compared to our countries. But aferall
we must admit mi novio and la Mama will appreciate to see each other once in a while
and a webcam can do "miracles".
Besides this I cannot go live in Colombia right now. I have 2 children at home full time (I am
a widower). They have their life overhere. Maybe in 19 - 20 years from now, when I
"jubilarse" I will go to Cali or any other "safe" place. Who can tell how it will be in Colombia
by then ? Sure then it will be an option, as my children wont need me anymore on a daily bases.

I dont mind bringing along the entire "belly" of a PC. when I leave my home for holidays,
my suitcase is only filled 50 %. Because I always bring along a lot of stuff from the country
will be visiting. Most of the time i gain back my airplane ticket this way (in profits I did abroad).

TO ECLIPSE :
A laptop would be a nice alternative. Though I believe laptop computers are not for the "common" users
La mama is not a computer geek, and I dont believe she will ever become one. (these are
poor working class people). So a solid desktop computer is a must. And I am able to build
one for them without doubts as long as i can find the surroundings (screen, keyboard,...) in
Cali.

TO EXPATRIATE :
ETB.com seems to be in the XEROX market LOL !! I think I must hit the wrong websites.
Anyway 83.000 pesos will be a lot for those people to cough up every month. So i will be forced
to go for a "lower" quality like a dial up.

you wrote :
As far as hardware, the shopping center Pasarela in the North must have 100 computer stores where you can buy anything computer related, and reasonably priced.

What can I understand to "reasonably priced". As far as I can see a Mall with 100 computer stores, must
have a lot of competition amongst them. Should I consider finding USA prices overthere ?
Or is the average still above the "common" western market price ? Is this shopping Mall comparable to Bangkok famous Pantip Plaza PC MALL ?
As those thai will kill each other to sell you a screw.jajaja !!!
Do they accept Visa cards at la Pasarela ? Or are there ATM's to get money ?

Thanks for further comments.

creamontop comments on Colombians in Germany I need your help!!!!!!!

I only can agree with Europeantraveler.

In any case IF it would be Belgium, you have another alternative (I dont know if it is the same for Germany). When you can proof you are in contact for a very long time (eg. visits from your girlfriend to colombia = like visa stamps in her travelpassport, pictures where you both are on, letters, chat logs you made over internet,... anything is handy and useable), you can apply for a 1 year schengen visa, which gives you the oppurtunity to be inside the Schengen area for 1 year minimum. Within the first 3 months you must go to a notary (attorney) and apply for a document stating you live together (under the same roof) it is called a joint-living-agreement. Sounds like a marriage contract without being married. After this you can extend your visa after 1 year without a problem. Also it will give you opportunities to get a work permit.Besides the proofs you both hand in to apply for such a visa, your girlfriend also must proof she has a job, steady income (not below a certain level), so in short able to support the foreigner she will be inviting into her country. And the last document she will need to fill in she takes full responsability for you once you arrive in Germany. :-)....

do not forget : these are rules for Belgium. I'm not sure if they apply for Germany. Just read extensively the German embassy website at bogotà. And yes not the websites of Embassies inside Germany.
you will get a lot of info specifically to your needs.

If you need help with translating german you just have to send me a PM. (I lived 9 years in Germany). I will be glad to help you out... Und noch VIEL Spass !!

Green cards = for USA, Europe is a totally different world and set of rules. Schengen States have the general document (including general rules), besides this every country has specific rules "on the side".

creamontop comments on What do you think constitutes fluency?

indeed gringoinbogota Being fluent in a language means the words rolll out of your mouth like water out of a tap.

first step is a wide range of knowledge in vocabulary, grammar spelling abilities and "feeling" for a language. In German it is called "fingerspitsengefuehl".

Second step : thinking in the language you speak. (this comes along with Third step). As you will gain time once you start doing it.

Third step : practising. Como "Platano" dijo !

the rest comes by itself. Nobody knows everything about a language. Even the Spanish rarely know their languages at fullest extend.

Concerning yourself as "fluent" depends on what you want to be able to do with a language. You can be fluent in talking gossip but quiet "handicapped" when trying to have a conversation with a chemical engineer in spanish about the latest researches in his field.

Besides this. It is always good to remain modest about own abilities. Keep up the good work utopiacowboy !

Though it is my intention to leave this sh*thole forever once I top retirement age. Colombia is one of my options. It all depends where I will find my "true" love, also where she is from. In any case when it will be a Colombiana. It will be Colombia. She will have the "chance" or "luck" as most see the "western culture" in such a way to live overhere. I will make sure she will be happy to return to "homecountry" once we passed the working period (untill 2026);-). .... and with the pension funds, live will be good in most places in Colombia.... creamontop comments on My trip to Barranquilla

cam0940 There is a thin line inbetween how "foreigners" think about people they visit abroad when it comes to (investing) paying for stuff, and the feeling comming along as being "used". Some really think of their friends/future parents in law/or whatever they could be , are leeching on them. Or have the "feelling" they are being leeched.

It is the same everywhere in the world. When you are "invited" into a private house : don't show off like a millionaire and you wont be treated like one. ;-). It does not mean you can buy a present for "la mama" to stimulate the relationship, in return for her "hospitality". I think this is using "comon senses". It does not have to be an "offending" gift, like it could be when you buy a dishwasher for the mother. But I am sure most mothers appreciate your guesture (like a box of chocolates or something special from your own country) as a token of appreciation.

For some communities on this globe is is very "normal" when you visit a small town, you buy beer/food or you pay the cow they gonna slaughter for the upcomming feast. When you dont understand, it does not mean those people are bad. It means you are Ignorant, and you did not do your homework. So you think you get "fucked" but in fact you are NOT !

As far as it is understandable, in countries (like colombia) where you have a lot of poor people, and a small amount of rich and wealthy. You know what you can expect. When you endup in a circle with rich compared to a circle in poor, the differences in the way thinks will run and end are can be quiet different. Dont make an issue of it. This happens everywhere in the world. It is NOT country related. It is STATUS related. And certainly not CULTURE related.

I would make no problem to pay the COW on the barbecue for the poor !
when they wanna make a nice party for me because they want me to have a good time. god dam I would be ashame of myself If i would not pay for the cow.Because it is for me these people are running their asses off.

I would feel offended and used when I had to pay for the Cow on the barbecue when alongside rich people who can afford to pay it themselves. I would considder them selfish PRICKS!!
I would feel myself leeched and used. And probably would kick someones behind ! And make sure i would throw up on the BBQ ;-)

creamontop comments on My trip to Barranquilla

I think this is becomming a pathetic thread to a fine report Mi peso.

I really wonder what is the "clue" and "benefit" of all these discussions ?

There are leeches everywhere in the world. There are also stupid at sses that are ready to get leeched on, everywhere in the world.
Accept there are differences in status all over the world where you enter as a tourist. The way you behave is the way you will be treated. (in many situations, although this is not a standard rule).
This is NOT a country-wise "cultural" thing.

The same happens to you when you visit other "cultures" (as example Thailand). A guy falls in love with his date (internet or real life), the family wants to see him, they are happy for the hija, they will test him out in many different ways to find out he is a worthy companion for their daughter, for her off spring later in time.

It is common knowledge every woman (wherever you go) want securities for herself and for "her" family. To have a good life upto the standards she/he can get.

As a rule of set. IF you really are so Ignorant about what is going on, take your precautions. What you make at home remains "at home", what she makes (in your country, or at her place) remains hers. she can do whatever she wants with it. Send to the family, .... whatever. You take care of the house, the off spring and her. Maybe you can build in a shared bank account where you both put in something for any purpose you decide up. This way you avoid a lot of shit !! You can bet your at ss on that. It is quiet insane to think you are used after you have the knowledge how to deal with people. In any place on this globe. It means you are only naive, vulnerable, ignorant and finally DUMB !! God dammed I hate this "whinings".

different people, different POV, different reasons Why do foreigners(men/women) want Colombian (women/men)? Why do colombian (women/men) want Foreign (men/woman)? Ask yourself (the majority on this board is, has or is looking for a relation with a person not of his own country (in short).
I am one of them (I admit at fullest extend). I am not writing my reasons in here, this is not my blog.

Is it obvious that : The grass is always more green at the other side of the fence ?
For many people it is an escape out of their own personal situation (culturaly/economicaly/politicaly). A way to change their life and environment to live in. For others it is because they are "fed up" with the counterparts in their own country. And... unfortunately there are some that want to take the advantage of the "good-will","trust","belief" of the person they are meeting, going to meet with or without descent intentions.

I deeply understand the feelings of some ladies on the board. And I regret this is "again" about women, overhere especially Callientes. I suggest the liberated and feminists to start a blog themselves about their "achievements","POV"about foreign man, ..... whatever. As a balance to this blog. I am sure a lot of gentlemen will be eager to receive the URL to read/comment whatever your POV will be.

cut crap safety from hotel is not everything. What sence does it make to pay twice the amount for a hotelbed when you know you will walk on the street the next morning and could get raped ?

Be streetwise. And no matter what hotel you sleep, you will always get the benefit of your knowledge.

but if you behave like an idiot, no place on earth is secure for you. You will pay the price for your ignorance. No matter where, no matter when.

Be smart.... you are not an embassador or a council lodging in the IC. You get out of your "bunker" hotel room, they can get you. You dont have bodyguards so... use comon sense. A good "secure" hotel maybe gives some kind of protection, anyhow when they want you, they will get you, on their territory : The street, a side alley, the pub, the nightclub,.... or are you going to spend your holidays completely inside your bunker hotel room ? I dont think so..... :-)

What to expect ? Can anybody just tell me what price tags i can expect ?

I'll be in Colombia end of February 2006.

I need several local flights.

1. Bogotà to Cali
2. Cali to Barranquilla.
3. Barranquilla to Bogotà (probably) or maybe I can catch my return flight from Cartagena which means taking a bus from BAQ to CTG.

I'm flying air Madrid from Barcelona or Madrid to Bogotà, for only 510 Euro (2 ways). Which I consider a bargain compared to the almost 1000 Euro offered by Aviancia for the same route.
So comparing both prices, hmmm... i do not believe it is full proof reasonable to claim a doulble price due to gaz prices, taxes.Maybe more to bad management or greed ?

Once I receive more information on where to find (in a secure barrio) a rental place I hope it will be appreciated to share this information. I'm going to Cali at the end of February 2006. So I have plenty of time to find. Meanwhile I hope there will follow informations and descriptions of the places which will be available due to the friend in Cali i'm contacting for the moment. Also some local chicas are trying to help me out with rather more "upscale" villa's with swimmingpool. This as I am not going alone but with a friend from my country. And we sure would like our private mansion for the period we will be there. No hassle with lobby's or guests that can be disturbed by our nightly noises. :-))

Don't let you get intimidated by spammers on this board !!

rental prices in Cali Rental prices in Cali on a monthly base should be no more as 1.000.000 Pesos. Over this rate you are abusing the logic and wasting the total income of a local person for 100 %. Because you are white or from another part of the world, there is no need to pay more as anybody else. Knowing you are only there during the night to sleep, consider yourself being treated with respect and pay no more as needed (I would recommend to fix yourself to a rate of maximum around 25.000 Pesos per night). So for 1 Mill pesos you can rent a complete house with swimmingpool and maid to cook for you in Cali. No need to pay more for less infrastructure. Be a tourist but not a milkcow. Be a buisinessman, but not a raper !!

Do not get a hangover I know your situation. I have been through such a stage myself with an Asian flower. I have learned my lesson. Compassion may help yourself, but it does not buy her love pawl. ;-) Consider them in pretty good shape. (23 is not a facelift age). so her looks, her attitudes and everything surrounding this can be a stealing value for you compared to your own age. Nevertheless, future in the States is better as it is (for the moment) in a country like Colombia. And every woman only has the same primary goals in life.
It is called financial security : for her offspring and herself. So maybe this sounds rude but we all know, guys like Donald Trump, or other Big shot money packers have the benefit in such situations. They can get any girl they want. Because of this sole institutional knowledge that money means power. Sure you are not D.Trump. But sending 200 US at glance to an ex working girl in colombia means close to a total month pay for some of them. At least 25 % of a monthly wage. Does any bell rings ?

For your own sake (like told before) keep both feet on the ground. Even when you found in her the true next love in your life. The chances exists once you bring her into the States her eyes will open as she sees the opportunity to find someone else closer to her age. Drop you like a stone and start all over with another dude.

One more thing. There is a lot of difference in ages once they surpass the 27 age barrier. Most crazyness is out of their brains. Those chica's are more to the point and down to earth. 23 is pretty young in my opinion. I would not recommend this for a long term relation with a 48 year old male. But who am I. This is my first post on this board. Nevertheless I have "some" life knowledge, and my experiences with foreign ladies. The most important thing is : keep your money in your pocket for the moment you meet in real life.
Ever heard of scams ?
