Will be visiting Colombia on a whirl-wind tour in July. Since no entiendo mucho Espaniol I need a good phrase book for the basic travel phrases (I need a taxi, where is the washroom, get your hand off my ass, etc).
Can anyone reccommend a good one? Maybe one attached to a guide to Colombia?
Gracias, amigas y amigos. ...
Hola,
Been living and working in Trinidad for the last 4 months. This gig ends in June, then I am planning to visit Colombia in early July. Land in Bogota, spend a few days, fly to Cali, Medellin, and then to Cartagena and Baranquilla. See the whole country in a week.
Any travel advice would be greatly appreciated, amigas y amigos. It's a whirlwind tour, but I am scouting out the possibility of moving to one of the Colombian cities.
If anyone her ...
What is the best way to get from Caracas to BAQ? Should I fly out of Caracas?
I am planning on leaving Port of Spain Trinidad to get to Venezualla, then to push on to BAQ and maybe Cartagena. Any advice would be mucho appreciated. Gracias. ...
Hola, amigas y amigos! Crazy Eagle has returned. Hope you have all been fine and well during my absence.
Anyhoo, I'm now down in Port of Spain, Trinidad, working like a gringo dog, and planning to trip down to Caracas over the Easter holiday, and then to push on to Baranquilla.
So, what's the best way to get from Venezualla to BQ? Bus? Safe? Will there be problems getting over the border, either from FARC or from the Colombian border guards?
Any ...
Hi gang,
Probably be in Trinidad in a month or so. How mucho will it cost to travel from Trinidad to Colombia? During my time off I would like to tour around Venezuala, Colombia, and Curacao. I'm open to flying & boating. Gracias. ...
I read that the hispanic population in Miami is now over 50% of the total, including a lot of Cubans, Colombians, and Puerto Ricans.
Can anyone tell me what it is like living for a gringo in the Miami area? ...

In Cartagena, Colombia, children who accumulated handicaps due to misery or illnesses were left to their own devices. Pascal Affolter from Zurich has built for them, brick by brick, a high quality foundation.

What happened to our PMs? Are they ever coming back?
The following appeared in the news recently:

"In Colombia, beauty can kill. Drivers ogling attractive women rather than paying attention to the road are one of the South American country's leading causes of car accidents.
Distraction was the No. 1 cause of the 115,000 road accidents in Colombia last year. They cost $US250 million ($A340 million), according to the Road Safety Fund. ...
Uhm, I've been gone for a while, busy with other things, but now that I'm back I can't find my private messages. Nor can I send them. What happenned? Run out of storage space?
If you are living in a place without hot water, is there some kind of gizmo you can get so you can have hot showers and baths? I remember someone writing something about this a while ago. Gracias.
Colombia has many good universities, some fine scientists, and physicians. But like every country, this must vary by region.
I'm sure Bogota, Medellin, and Manizales have a higher percentage of individuals with degrees than say, Cartagena. But what about Barranquilla and Cali?
Does anyone have an opinion on this? Even impressions are worth something. ...
Here is a good film to watch, if you liked Apocalypse Now. Its based on the legend of El Dorado, invented by the Indians to divert the Spanish on a quest into the interior. This is why Colombia has so many cities in the interior, like Bogota. The conquistadores were searching for El Dorado. ...
In terms of climate, people, culture? Is it sunny? What is the racial mix? Gracias, amigos and amigas.
OK, what about Bucaramanga? Lots of sunny days in that city? I have already ruled out Bogota because of the weather (except for visits). But if Bucaramanga is nice and sunny I might consider living there. Gracias. ...
What is typical Bogota weather? Do you get blue skies every week? Sunny days? I already know its kind of chilly. I may be moving to Colombia, so I must look before I leap. Gracias, amigos & amigas. ...
Is this guy doing much to improve the country? All I know about him is that he is a hardliner against FARC. It seems like Colombia needs:
1) more business friendly environment (lower taxes, less red tape)
2) free trade with USA & Brazil
3) better police/judicial system
4) infrastructure like ports, roads, & rail so rural farmers can make a living getting legit crops to market, not growing plants for white powder.

Guys,
We have to be careful about what and how we write on this forum, or else we will drive alway some of these smart Colombian women that add so much to this site - Colombiche, Adminn, Desi, Paisa29, WorldCitizen, Lucia Rojas, and others.
I'm talking about some of the cruder messages that might be considered degrading to Colombianas. If you would not want to read a message about your sister or your gringa friends, don't post it. If you must write about it, save i ...
Can anyone tell me what Bucaramanga is like? In terms of culture, people, ethnic mix, climate, architecture, night life? Gracias.
Everyone talks about the weather but no one does a damned thing about it.
I hear that Bogota has a lot of grey days. OK, but what about Cali, Medellin, Cartagena, and Barranquilla? Are the skies usually blue in these cities? Gracias. ...
Does anyone know if this school hires Canadians or Americans to teach? Or do they just hire Brits? Gracias.
Not many people know that when the English and the French fought over what is now Canada, most of the Native Canadian tribes sided with the French.
The reason was that when the English landed to trade guns, tools, & jewellry in exchange for meat & fur, they would do their business and leave. The French would trade, and then, with typical Gallic joi de vivre, there would be a big party. So, the Indians thought that the French were just more fun.

Just curious: are there any north americans here that have gone native and settled down for good in Colombia? If so, what were your motives? And would any of the rest of you consider leaving the great white north behind you and putting down roots in Locombia? ...
does anyone know of an international school in Santa Marta? One that teaches high school subjects in English. Gracias.
Hi gang,
Does anyone live here, or has travelled there? Where is this department compared to Bogota or Medellin? What's Bucaramanga like, in terms of climate, culture, ethnic mix? I have heard a lot about the other cities and departments, but not this one. ...
Hey, does anyone have an email address for the director of this place? I am looking for a job teaching high school math in Colombia, and the email I have for this place is not valid. I have this:

But like I said it doesn't work. Does anyone know of a contact at this school?
Gracias. ...
Is Colombia still exporting oil? If so, they must be making out like banditos these days, with the price of oil going thru the roof. Is there an oil-rich region of Colombia?
I read somewhere that Colombian music has three roots: Indian, Spanish, and African. Here in Canada I have heard these South American Indian bands playing this haunting music with flutes and pipes, but I do not know where they are from.
Do you hear this in Colombia? I love electronic music, and think it would be fantastic if someone created an album with Indian and Spanish melodies on top of synthesized rythym and an African beat. ...

Hey, does anyone have any input on what it would be like to live in these two cities? I know Cartagena is an old port city with a castle and cobblestone streets. Are these good places to live?
Another guy posted a very disturbing story (Jobs in Medellin) about how his girlfriend was "let go" from her job after refusing the advances of her boss.
What are the options for a woman in this situation? If I knew a woman in this situation, I would first get her to document everything and try to enlist the support of others in the office. I would get her to carry a hidden tape recorder to record this sc*mbag's words. If the tape captured something I might play it back to him ...
If we move to a large city in Colombia from North America, what should we bring with us besides our passport?
Are there some things that are hard to get down there that we North Americans are accustomed to? Or, some things that our new Colombian friends would appreciate as nice gifts?

Hey, any Canadians out there who are living in Colombia? If so, I would love to hear how you enjoy living in Colombia compared to life in Canuckistan. I am a canuck who might relocate to Colombia to teach at a high school. Just wondering about the major differences between life down there and up here. ...
My impression is that poverty is a problem in Colombia, and that the trouble with the rebels has diverted valuable resources away from infra-structure and has scared off much need investment in industry.
Two questions:
1) are there any signs that the rebel forces are changing thier ways, or being increasingly marginalized?
2) are there any new free trade agreements on the horizon, with large trading partners such as USA and Brazil?

I am seriously thinking of working as a teacher at an international school in Bogota or Medellin once I graduate next Spring. My Spanish is currently limited to "dos cervesas por favor" and "gracias", counting to 10, and not much else.
Can a person get by in Bogota with little Spanish? What about Medellin? Do you folks recommend a many Spanish lessons as possible before coming over? ...
Just wondering: are there a lot of Paisas in Bogota? Do most Bogotonos seem to come from somewhere else, like Medellin?
I have heard that Paisas are known for their business skills, but I have also heard that Colombia is a sexist society.
Do Paisa women participate in business? Do you commonly see female business owners and managers? ...

I am interested in visiting Colombia in late August/early September, OR over the Christmas break.
I searched the net for some airfares (Canada to Colombia) for Aug/Sept, and came up with cheapest at around $1200. Does this seem to you to be about the lowest? Or are there some deals that I am missing? Would Christmas be cheaper?
Thanks! ...
Can anyone provide contact information for the Columbus School in Medellin?
I would like to apply for a job teaching high school classes at the place, but my browser does not read their website! And the email address I have for the director does not work!

My impression from some of the posts is that when a Colombian woman and a gringo get serious, she is usually the boss of the relationship. Something about the martiarchal nature of Colombian society, I gather. ...
I hope to follow my namesake Cristoforo Colombo to the shores of Colombia, except unlike Cris Colombo {aka Chris Columbus} I will know where I am.
Which city would you recommend? Bogota of course is big and cosmopolitan, and has many fine aspects. But what about Cali and Medellin? What can be said for them? ...

What in the world do all these terms used to describe Colombian women mean? What is a "paisa"? And what are the other categories?
Hello everyone,
Does anyone know where I could get a list of Colombian universities and colleges? I am interested in teaching at one of them. I have an MBA, plus some degrees in economics, and someone told me (rightly or wrongly) that I may be able to find work teaching at a college or university.
In one year I will also be a certified high school math teacher, so another option is to teach at an international school. Does anyone here have an informed opinion of w ...
