Crazy Eagle comments on In Colombia July 4 - 12

Hey Tavioto, I will be spending a few days in Cali. Why not drop me an email message at the above address?

Crazy Eagle comments on Romanticizing Colombia. The painful truth.

my dos pesos The hottest I've seen, in no particular order:

Andorans (from Andorra, North of Spain)
Brazilians
Colombians

All Latin types, best with some black in their background. However, I am a blue-eyed gringo, look Kraut or Russki, so to me the Latin look is very exotic.

Must admit Romanians are very cute too...

Crazy Eagle comments on Marriage Woes

Document her insane behavior in as many ways as possible before going to court - audio tape, video, witnessess other than her family. That is the key to getting custody and minimizing the financial hit you will take.

But don't let her know you are planning divorce until you HAVE YOUR EVIDENCE. She's schizo, I know one personally, and you cannot reason with them, but they can act normal for short periods when they feel they have to pretend that they don't "know" that there is a vast conspiracy against them. Good luck amigo.

Crazy Eagle comments on Hola de Cali

Cartagena, Medellin, or Manizales Cartagena has a lot of historical things to explore. Medellin is supposedly very interesting, and Manizales is picturesque university town.

I am also a Cancuk. What did you think of Cali?

Crazy Eagle comments on Strategies for dating "good" Colombianas

statistically ... THere was a study done, trying to find out what age diff is best in a marriage. The standard used was divorce rate. They found that older the woman was over the man the higher the rate of divorce. The lowest divorce rate was for men 7-10 years older than the woman.

Females mature faster than males.

remember Lincoln Don't go, Elmo. Remember that dream Lincoln had about being assasinated? History is full of pre-cognitive dreams. But, there is also evidence that these are dreams of what might happen, not what will happen. In other words, they are more like warnings from the future, not previews.

Crazy Eagle comments on Colombian culture and diamond rings

diamonds a marketing scam The most successful campagin in the history of business. De Boors started it all. Diamonds are NOT rare - they are just shiny rocks. De Boors buys up diamond minds and shuts most of them down, to keep the rocks off the market so that the price remains high. In places like Siera Leone different groups kill each other for control of the mines. In many European countries married people just wear a plain ring - no shiny rock. Remember that Simpson episode where Skinner falls for Homer's sister in law? He goes to the diamond store and the clerk tells him "a good rule of thumb is three years salary." Yeesh.

actually ... Spig wrote: "But what I thought was interesting is the guy with the gun obviously had no clue how to handle it. If I were a robber, I´d jam the gun in your back or at the back of your head."

Actually thats totally NOT how to use a pistol. The police and some soldiers know that someone with a gun can be disarmed quite easily before they can fire a single shot, if the pistolero is standing close to you. Its because when you grab thier arm they must a) decide to fire, and b) the signal must travel to the trigger finger. All this takes time, more time than it takes to grab the gun or swing a club. That is why you see cops with guns drawn standing several yards away from suspects - they know how easy it is to be disarmed. An ex British soldier taught me that, from experiments they did in the army using cap guns.

Now, I'm not advising people to fight muggers! But I'm just saying, if you feel you have to, then this is good information.

GIB wrote: "Many of them are bored to death here and who can blame them. It is the same small place everywhere you go. Same music, same food, same dance, same people. The biggest reason I have found for people leaving is that they were bored."

Uh, GIB, I thought you loved living in Bogota. Now you are bored? Somehow the word "boring" does not really come to mind when I think of Colombia. Is Medellin boring? Cartagena? BAQ?

Crazy Eagle comments on The real scoop on Colombia. .

Colombiche has an out here.... She asked for "the name of a country where natives and blacks have political power and live in the best neighborhoods", so that would exclude countries where 99.9% of the population are natives and blacks, because in these countries there are not even nearly enough whites to run the shop. Giving places like Haiti as examples is kind of like pointing to some hell-hole reservation as a place where American Indians have political power and live in the best shacks.

Crazy Eagle comments on gringos, tenga cuidado!

Politically Incorrect I used to LOVE that show, until Bill Mahr struck a raw nerve after 9-11 and lost his show :-(

So yeah, well put Tinto. Sometimes I read things here that are informative, insightful or funny, and they make up for those posts that make me wince (insults, name-calling, accusations, etc). Man, try to remember that other humans are reading your stuff!

And Colombiche, I have tried hard to stop "speaking sweepings on the Colombian women" and now I am working on not "discussing like keeping its pigs dolares." Hope I pull it off.

Mario & Colombiche Also Desi & WorldCitizen too. That brings the total up to 5.

Like I said earlier, we have to remember that we are guests in Colombia, and must behave ourselves! It is far too easy to write things that leave an impression of disrepect.

Aguila Loca no entiende muy bien I wish Colombians would post in English for the benefit of us ignorant gringos who have not yet mastered the language. Otherwise I think I'm getting accused of "speaking sweepings on Colombianas".

But I know enough to sense pain in these messages. You women are right, we have to be careful about what we write, and always respectful of the country we are all so interested in.

Crazy Eagle comments on No need for advice but a thought

Colombiche, what?!? Since no entiendo mucho Espanol, I had to use Babelfish to translate your message:

"That sweepings, really that all the days this bond except the pain to read it, this is not a pagina on Colombia, this is a pagina so that the foreigners come to speak sweepings on the Colombian women and to discuss like keeping its pigs dolares."

Well, I did not intend to "speak sweepings" on the Colombianas (I suspect that something was lost in translation). I have no doubt there are plenty of good women in all stratas. But, one must be careful and I have heard of some heartbroken boppers who ended up with smaller bank accounts.

depends on how you were raised? I agree Mario, and I did say that I'm sure there are good poor girls too. I'm just repeating what a nice Colombiana told me - that I should avoid dating very poor Colombianas because they are more likely to see me as a meal ticket or a plane ticket.

She advised me to find a nice educated girl, and she told me that she would never even think of asking her gringo boyfriend for cash. OK, she is a lucky person I'm sure. But I disagree with Roci's post, and I think this Colombiana knows what she is talking about. And, I have no interest in using anyone, and I certainly don't want to be used myself.

Crazy Eagle comments on No need for advice but a thought

One Colombian woman I know advised me to simply not date very poor Colombian women. Her advice was to only date educated ambitious chicas. Now, I am sure there are good poor girls too, but I would have much less in common with them. But if I was dating one of them and she asked for $$$, I would be suspicious and ask why she needed it. Then, instead of giving her money, I would buy what she needed, or otherwise make sure that it was spent on what she said - food, medicine, education - and not on fancy clothes and parties.

Crazy Eagle comments on The nerve of some colombianos

good points Colombiche Colombiche wrote:

"I can't believe how condescending people can get on the grounds of economical prowess. Please explain how different this is from racism or classism? At the end of the day, it boils down to a person feeling superior to another person because they have something the other person lacks (whether it be $$$, white skin etc)."

I have noticed that the most racist/classist people tend to be the most insecure people I know. They need someone to look down upon, in order to boost thier low self-esteem.

Colombiche, I used to live in Toronto, and while I liked some aspects of it, I found many people exceedingly snobbish about money. I saw people bragging about their credit cards, how much money their wives made, how much their car costs, etc. Got so disgusted with this that I left. Unfortunately, I also left behind a big gorgeous black woman (sigh). I have blue eyes and fair skin, by the way, so I'm not prejudiced against anyone, including chinos ;-)

Anyhoo, different places have differnt cultures, and I'll bet that some parts of Colombia are more racist/classist than others.

Crazy Eagle comments on Racism discussion at a COL university BY COL students

multi-cultural I grew up in Canada, and in university knew a lot of people from different countries. One of my best drinking buddies was from Kenya. When I moved to California I lived in an area with perhaps 20-30% blacks (mostly yuppies) and noted many times how blacks seemed surprised that I would converse with them completly relaxed as though it were nothing unusual.

The blacks in the States tend to have their own sub-culture, with different vocabulary, pronounciation, music, and values. In Canada, because there are far fewer, they are far more integrated.

My guess is that in Colombia some areas are more integrated than others. Antiquoa has a very white bread rep. Caslug, did you see many mulato students on campus? Any studying to be teachers? Probably more on campuses in coastal towns and in Cali.

Crazy Eagle comments on Xmas in Bogota

I don't know what it is like in Bogota but in San Francisco it is awesome! In Union Square they erect a giant pine tree about 200 feet tall (I'm not kidding) and decorate it with huge green & gold & purple decorations the size of a basketball. Christmas music plays everywhere. What an incredible city. One Christmas eve I gave a homeless woman who petitioned me five dollars. She looked like a junkie, but hey it was Christmas.

poser hypocritico I'm not sure if anyone has to get bored in Colombia and head for the USA. What about spending a few days in Bogota? Its a big city. Or heading to Cartagena for the heat and the beach? Then there is the Dominican Republic, Cuba, cities like Rio, Buenos Airies, and more.
