Name: Mompos
Region: The caribbean coast
Telcode:
Population: 34,500
Elevation: 33
Temperature:
Description:
Mompos is on the banks of the Magdalena River (the major river of Colombia). Mompos used to be a stopping place for boats on the way between the coastal port at Baranquilla and Bogota. When steamboats were introduced they used a larger branch of the river and Mompos lost its importance.
Santa Cruz de Mompox or Mompos was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. It is not far above sea level in the middle of swampy land. The city saw originally founded by Andalusians and a lot of the architecture still has Moorish features. The houses are mostly built around large courtyards and the city is full of small squares.
