Mompos, Colombia

Write a review | Edit place information | Add a hostel

Mompos is on the banks of the Magdalena River (the major river of Colombia). Mompos used to be a stopping place for boats on the way between the coastal port at Baranquilla and Bogota. When steamboats were introduced they used a larger branch of the river and Mompos lost its importance.

Santa Cruz de Mompox or Mompos was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. It is not far above sea level in the middle of swampy land. The city saw originally founded by Andalusians and a lot of the architecture still has Moorish features. The houses are mostly built around large courtyards and the city is full of small squares.

Population: 34,500 Elevation: 33 meters. | Editing history.

Places to stay:

Hotel Aurora (0 comments) Calle Real del Medio, #15-65 Private rooms available.
A good budget option (40,000 for a double if staying more than one night). Basic rooms with fans. A very friendly women runs it who encourages her guests to stay all night to party.
