Monteria, Colombia

Write a review | Edit place information | Add a hostel

The departmental capital of Córdoba, it is a medium sized argiculture city.

The region is one of the primary cotton growing regions of Colombia. The town itself displays a lot of middle class wealth. The city is well taken care of and new improvements such as the riverside park make the city a nice place to hang out for a couple of days.

The city is a convienient stop off between Cartagena / Mompos and Turbo.

Population: 380,000 Elevation: 18 meters. Tel: 4 | Editing history.

The area around Carreras 3 and 4 and Calles 34 and 35 has a lot of cheap hotels.

Hotel Central (Calle 34 #3-44) offers clean onsuite fan-cooled rooms from 30,000 per night. Phone: 7811690, Email: hotelcentralms at hotmail.com

Things to do:

Visit the park that runs along side the River Sino.

There are some photos of Monteria here:

From Monteria you can catch a bus to San Antero (from Monteria Terminal), from San Antero it is only 5 minutes to Playa Blanca (1000COP by moto-taxi). Playa Blanca is a huge beach destination for Colombians, expect lots of partying at the weekends. The beach itself is not the best in Colombia but the water is strangely warm.

The San Anterio bus continues to Coveñas, which is an upmarket beach resort.

In this area you can also do boat trips up the River Sino.

Alternatively you can catch a bus from Monteria to San Bernando del Viento where there are jeeps to take you to Playa San Bernando which is a colossal stretch of sand.

Practical information:

The main plaza of Monteria is situated on Calle 4 and Carrera 29. The banks are all near here and Calle 3/Carrera 30.

There are lots of Internet cafes near the main plaza and in the area around Calle 35 and Carreras 4 and 5.

There is an excellent pizza restaurant in Monteria - maybe the best pizza in Colombia? Piccola Italia Express, Calle 29, Av 1 (Pizza was 16,000 to 18,000 for two).

Along the river front (and the river sino park) there are lots of bars and restaurants between calles 35 and 29. It is a very lively evening spot.

Getting around & transportation:

There is a new terminal near Calle 41 and Carrera 5. A taxi from here to the area of hotels near Carrera 3 and Calle 34 costs 3,300COP.

There are regular buses running to Monteria from other cities. If your coming from Mompos then change at Sincelejo and catch a bus from here. From Baranquilla buses take 8 hours and cost 50,000COP.
