Barichara, Colombia

Write a review | Edit place information | Add a hostel

Close to San Gil (40 minutes in bus) on the road from Bogota to the coast, Baricharra is an incredibly beautiful tiny colonial town, with whitewashed houses and stone streets. There are a few local sights to see.
The town has been preserved by city ordinance as it was 200 years ago. That means cobblestone streets, no high stories buildings, adobe/stucco walls, wooden doors and windows, and no fences.
The town is a hollywood dream and a few movies / shows have been shot there.

Average temperature: 26 degrees Celcius. Tel: 7 | Editing history.

Places to stay:

Posada Dona Flor (0 comments) Carrera 7 # 4 - 05 (1 block from the cathedral, go left if standing on the steps facing the door)
Located in a traditional courtyarded house, this family-run posada is perfect for the quiet budget traveller seeking a comfortable, quiet place to stay. Dona Flor has several different sorts of rooms to pick from - there is a large one with 5 beds that could be used as a dormitory for a reasonable price, but you may have to suggest it or show up with a group of people already as I don't think she's heard of hostelling. If you are looking for a quiet double definitely check it out. Paid $35,000 /night in Nov 2007.

A more upscale option in a beautiful colonial building. Nice rooms with baths start at 25 US$ for a single, 35 US$ for a double.

Travelguides:

Things to do in Barichara: If you're into walking, there's a Camino Real from Barichara to Guane. Guane is very small, one can buy home made sabajon and have a good lunch (soup, goat meat, rice, yuca, pepitoria, etc.) in the restaurant next to the archeological museum. To go back to Barichara one can walk again, take a lift with someone who's leaving at that moment and has a jeep or truck (around 1000 or 2000 COP) or take a taxi for 20000 COP.
