Colombia > Santa Marta > El Dorado bird reserve
This reserve has 18 endemic species of birds and is the most important place in South America for birders. It also has 4 endangered frog species and similar endemism in butterflies and other classes. Just near the lodge one can see the 5775m peaks of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta above, and the Carribean below, one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the planet.
Accomodation can be booked through EcoTurs Colombia (http://www.ecoturs.org), the cost is US $85 per perosn per day all inc, but big reductions for Colombian nationals, researchers etc. Although near Santa Marta the access is very difficult. There are regular bus services to Minca but from there one needs a jeep and there are none available there. From Santa Marta a jeep could cost as much as $250,000 pesos. A moto would be cheaper for a singel person. EcoTurs can organise the transport.
