Ha Ha. Very true. I have had one since I was a little kid. Don't ask me where I have it though. I always thought that the fur on the leather was a little creepy.

Peace,

You maybe a Colombian, but not a Paisa. El carriel is really from Antioquia. How about you colombianogringo. Paisa roots for you?

No. Mitad Rolo y mitad Opita.

Aunque si algun dia logro me voy a vivir a Colombia, creo que sera a Medellin. Bogota es un mierdero completo y Neiva es muy pueblo.

Sorry. I accidentally posted in Spanish. For the benefit of our non-Spanish speaking friends.

No. Half Rolo (Bogotano) and half Opita(Huilense). However, if I ever manage to move to Colombia, I think it will be to Medellin. Bogota is a madbhouse and Neiva is too "small-townish".

I saw once a Paisa with one carriel and a few drinks on him, he was taking toy bills to cheer up a Ecuadorian band that was playing Andean muisic at the flee market behind hacienda Santa Barbara.

The guy will take a toy bill from the carriel and will raised it high in his hand, so everyone will see him, when putting the bill down he will say Viva Colombia Carajo!

. It was a nice afternoon, I am sad somehow I lost the pictures.

My negro, I'm sorry con excuse me, but I think the carriel is from Antioquia, and I guess that if you're a pastuso, you don't have to have one. And speaking of carrieles, did you get that one from China? Cause it looks terrible. So, if you don't have sombreo vueltiao, you're not colombian, huh??

Also, I remember the grandfather of my wife wearing a "I'm drunk and I lost my horse" t-shirt. The story was that that really happened to him when he was younger, but the funny thing was that the t-shirt was in English, from Texas. So Paisas really are like the Texans of Colombia?

Desideria (Moderator) says on Jul 12, 2007, 01:35:

It's not a real machete, it's not that sharp or big (just about 75 cm in length). It's just a decorative item. No problem they never took a look . I've also brought an axe from Finland in a suitcase, recently. No problem.

I'm not off to Finland this summer any more, just taking a cruise to Riga next week with a friend.

Desi

I think "mochilas" are more popular than carrieles...I've only seen carieles on paisas, but mochilas I've seen everywhere specially on Bogotanos que se creen Hippies...anyway, they're just as ugly.

Cerealkiller says on Jul 12, 2007, 07:15:

I love mochilas theyre comfortable, everything fits in there and chances are no one will try and steal it from you because it looks so humble. I dont think of myself as a hippie and chances are not many of the people who war them consider themselves hippies...The mochila has become a colombian fashion icon, and everyone wears it...Webmanco I wouldve added the alpargatas and a ruanita but I dont think many people actually wear the full gear.

i used to have some great photos of finqueros/campesinos with their scopetas and huipiles and carrieles. you're right, they typify antioquia in particular. there used to be a place down below la playa in the area of estribo where they made fantastic ones. late 80's early 90's. they would have as many as 15-20 hidden pockets. some were even made from jaguar others from nutria. now most often they use cow hides. up in el retiro, you can find some great ones also.

with all due respect to the creator and owner, the one pictured is really....well, medium to ho hum. if you look, you'll find killer pieces. there's an estribo store in oviedo (medallo) where you might see some good ones. too, down by the nutibara there's a leather store (can't think of the name off hand, it's famous throughout colombia) but there you might see some of the finer ones. the ones from jaguar--que pena--are the summa bono.

I always find Mochilas cut into my neck if I wear them across the body. My husband uses it sometimes but don't think he would ever wear the hairy one. We bought vueltiaos lst time and they adorn the walls of the house. Would look like a right prat wearing one of those in WAG'sville (Essex). Might wear it to Carnaval del Pueblo in Aug tho!
