4 Americans Strangled in Mexico AP
Mexico (May 15) — The bodies of four U.S. citizens were found strangled, beaten and stabbed in a van in this border city, two days after they reportedly left their Southern California homes for a night at the Mexican clubs, U.S. officials said Thursday.
The victims, ages 19 to 23 years old, were found tied up on Saturday, but their deaths were not reported earlier because they were under investigation, said Fermin Gomez, an assistant state prosecutor in Baja California.
U.S. consular officials in Tijuana said the victims — two men and two women from the San Diego and Chula Vista areas — were U.S. citizens. The state attorney general's office in Baja California said one of the women was Mexican.
Their deaths are the latest in a string of violence in Tijuana that authorities blame on a bloody turf war between drug cartels.
"I just don't think kids should be going to Tijuana right now," Chula Vista police Lt. Scott Arsenault told the San Diego Union-Tribune. "They ran into the wrong people, obviously."
Bernard Gonzales, a spokesman for the Chula Vista Police Department, said a friend told the women's parents they were headed to nightclubs in Tijuana on Thursday night. They were reported missing the next day when they did not answer their cell phones.

the MSNBC version indicated that one of them had cocaine in her system, and a relative admitted that they knew several drug dealers in TJ.

Escape Artist says on May 15, 2009, 16:05: Anyone who considers any of the border towns in Mexico a fair representation of what the real Mexico and Mexicans are like obviously has not ventured out into the "real" Mexico. Growing up in one of the US border towns and then traveling further into Mexico as an adult gave me a totally different perspective of what the country and people are like. If you have only been to Tijuana, Nogales or Ciudad Juárez you are looking at Mexico through a very narrow window and not giving it a fair shake. It would be like going to Buena Ventura and judging all of Colombia based upon your knowledge of only that city. You would think all of Colombia is an ugly and dangerous place when in fact we all know different. EA 1 funny, 0 helpful. |

Man Tequila says on May 15, 2009, 16:24: Tijuana is a dangerous city. So was Buenaventura, last time I checked. An ignorant person might generalize the dangers of Colombia based on, say, an incident in La Guajira. That person does not exactly become a sage when talking about Mexico. Should the North pay the South Reperations in the USA? Should we go back and make the Aztecs pay reperations for the slaughter of countless other tribes within Mexico's borders and what used to be Mexicos borders. Come on. sanandressi says on May 16, 2009, 06:06: Mexico is where Colombia was in the late 80's with Escobar. You can thank Colombia for Mexico's problems since it was the COLOMBIAN cartels who decided to ship drugs overland from Mexico because Pappa Bush did such a good job in stopping the drugs in Florida in the late 80''s when he was drug czar. So I have read anyway. Of course, if there is no demand there is no supply but that still does not justify growing a product that has no nutritional value and destroys the human body. I have no use for Colombians who justify drug production simply because there is demand!

Man Tequila says on May 16, 2009, 07:00: Mexicans argue they are not a failed state as one may still travel anywhere in the country. Some Mexicans blame Colombia for expanding trafficking, but Mexican criminals are also resourceful and I think this argument somewhat exaggerated. Given the tremendous failure of the drug war, and the enormous waste of resources and failure of policy -- it is hard to credibly blame this on Florida's policies -- if they worked so well in Florida, why not elsewhere?
