Yo Quiero Greenpeace... En Colombia

I've created a Facebook group in the above name.

So far, we have 6,458 members and while the Colombians in the group are very enthusiastic, I can't really understand what they're saying.

Please join if you have something to contribute or even just some cynical remarks that will keep the group alive and kicking.

They're saying "We don't have freakin jobs, we're trying to feed our family , my mother has arthritis and I can't afford the medical treatment,we'll take what ever work we can get , even if it's in an open pit coal mine, so go back home you-eco, freak, but take a slow boat, because that 747 you came in on burns the same green house gas per person as driving a hummer for a year"

I believe that Colombia is too young and does not have the resources available at this time to be heavily influenced by an organisation like Greenpeace.
Do not get me wrong; I am personally very much in favour of the conservation of our natural environment.
Perhaps improving the way that children are educated about environmental issues would sew the seeds for improvement. Like making them aware that recycling makes sense, that throwing rubbish/oil/solvents/whatever into rivers kills the flora and fauna, that removing trees from mountain slopes aids erosion, that the internal combustion engine is creating a hazardous atmosphere in the cities, that crop rotation helps maintain the soil which provides for them, that deforestation will effect the planet, that Colombia's rich biodiversity is under threat. In a country where day-to-day survival seems and often is the most important thing, how do you achieve this? Industry hardly sets an example! Foreign companies come here to mine and exploit knowing that the legislation here is so weak that they will get away with murder. Where are the government environmental watch-dogs, in fact do they exist? If they do, are the cost implications of improving these processes prohibitive? Does Health and Safety exist in most companies?
Education, legislation and enforcement are the key issues here but how is the positive cycle going to start?
Any ideas how this can be started because I am in favour but I do not think that the at times obsessive tendancies of an organisation like Greenpeace is the answer. After all, I seem to remember that they wanted to see the end of Chlorination of drinking water; bullshit!
A more grass-routes organisation would be more valuable and understandable to the people here.
