yellow fever vaccine $$$

How much does a yellow fever vaccine cost more or less in Colombia? I am moving from Dallas to Bucaramanga in a couple of months and am hoping it will be cheaper to get it down there. Here at the county clinics it is over $100 and my insurnace won't cover it.

Yellow Fever vaccine Adrienne. PLEASE don't pay US$100.00 to have it done in the US. It is WAY cheaper to have it done in Colombia. I don't know pricing but I'd be surprised if it costs more than US $10.00.

Have a good trip. You'll love Bucaramanga

Adrienne to be honest you don't need, the yellow fever vaccine, until you travel to parque Tayronna, or the amazon region, i did not get mine until at least a year in Colombia. Colombia is different from Brazil that you do not need one to enter the country, Bucaramanga is the eternal spring city of Colombia, there are not lots of mosquitoes like the coastal regions.

i got mine for free all i had to do was give a donation, gave them $10 000.

Thanks but I am going to get it to be safe. It is recommended in Bucaramanga. Maybe if I was just traveling there, I would not worry but since I will be living there, I might as well do what the locals do and get the shot. I traveled to Brazil two years ago to an area that suggested having it but I never got it. I think it is better to be safe than sorry and for only a few bucks, I might as well since I wil be there permenatly.

I got the Yellow Fever shot in Barranquilla for free at a clinic. This was in order to go to Parque Tayrona. Sometimes they check and won't let you in without the shot. The day we went, they weren't checking, but it was good to know we were safe anyway. As for paying $100 to do it before hand ... Wow, that hundred bucks would go a lot further in Colombia! Save your money and have fun.

Do you need it? I'm not sure that yellow fever is a problem in Bucaramanga. I got it for a trip to Tayrona. Bucaramanga is pretty far from there.... The vaccine is only estimated to be 50% effective anyhow (meaning if you are stung by an infected mosquito, your chances of getting the disease are still pretty good), so if cash is a real problem, re-evaluate if you really need this vaccine.

Some thoughts - DRAFT FOR COMMENT Yellow fever is very very rare in Colombia but on the other hand there is no cure so if you get it you will probably die, that's why you need the jab.
Malaria is common in some parts below around 1000m. By using insect repellent and covering up your body you can reduce the risk significantly, but you must be aware of the symptoms and get to treatment in a major town quickly if you self-diagnose it. If you are going somewhere whre it exists really remote for a long time then take treatment dose, if you are going somewhere where it is very prevalent for a short time take prophylactics.
Denge fever there is no reliable cure but you will most probably recover quite quickly if you get good medical care, so again be aware of symptoms.
Leischmans disease is not fatal but can cause nasty scarring so you need to be aware of the symptoms to deal with them quickly if you get sandfly bites.
If you get bitten by horseflies (tabanos) you wont get any diseases but they hurt like hell.

Man Tequila says on Apr 29, 2007, 20:53:

The World Health Organization estimates 15% of folks with yellow fever enter a toxic phase which kills half of those people. So maybe one in twelve of people who get yellow fever die and the rest recover from the virus.

It is not common, but one would be wise to get the shot if going to Amazonas or many of the National Parks. If you want to go to Brazil, you need proof of vaccination if you have been in Colombia during the prior three months.
