The reason I’m asking is that this is demeaning to the proud citizens of Columbia, South Carolina. (Of course the spelling is slightly different, but it sounds the same in conversation.) Lately it seems that the these poor people have had little more to worry about other than the thought that the big bad country south of the equator has usurped their name (and perhaps their very soul). Imagine their misery when they travel abroad and in response to the common question “Where are you from ? they reply “Columbia, and are mistaken for a South American ! Something this horribly embarrassing can easily ruin a whole vacation. Perhaps, the citizens of Colombia could take a new name. After all, how attached could they be to a name based on a Portuguese Explorer whose arrival precipitated the rape, plunder, subjugation and murder of the indigenous population throughout the entire continent ?
How about Colombosians… or maybe Colomites ?
I’m sure this would go a long way to ease the present insecurity of the citizens of Columbia SC.

sandie29 says on Jun 20, 2005, 10:34: Can we just do something better with our time!!! Don't people have nothing better to do than to make comments like this?...why dont we worry or do something about things like child poverty, racism, bullying, war....??? instead of worrying on how to call ourselves or wether this makes people unconfortable?...

kernow62 says on Jun 20, 2005, 11:18: We've covered racism. Bullying if verbal we've covered. Child poverty is one we could cover, we've heard of Elmo's childhood, but that is a topic I am open to discuss. Feel free to start a thread. War is for the other forum.

N2Aquatix says on Jun 20, 2005, 12:11: Clear And Present Danger A round of applause for Sandie29. And yes, Kat they do know that Colombia exists. It's where all the cocaine comes from, and they made that movie "Clear And Present Danger" about all the killing that goes on by the cartels and all the military assistance provided by the American government to the Colombian government. You see, it may be over-sensationalized by our media, but at the same time it's very well publicized. It's really a shame because the thing that caught my attention the most was the abundance of hot- at ss latinas all drooling at the chance to meet a white-boy. Never saw any toot, just a bunch of gun-toting soldiers which is definitely cool. Peace through superior firepower! ;)

N2Aquatix says on Jun 20, 2005, 12:21: Have To Check It Out I'll have to check it out. That movie looks like it probably kicks at ss.

kernow62 says on Jun 20, 2005, 13:02: Sandie29, are you planning to start a meaningful thread? I would be happy if there were some more meaningful threads, but somebody has to step up. Sometimes when Platano posts something interesting it is met by "who cares", but I am sure you could find some topic that we would all like to participate in.

MYASSYOURASS123 says on Jun 20, 2005, 14:01: Just another example Just so you would know. Colombus originated from Italy and sailed for Spain. He explored much of the carribean and irony had nothing to do with the South American continent. Some forty years later Spanish conquistadors would rape, pillage and plunder" the continent. The portugese only made colonies in Brazil.

Cerealkiller says on Jun 20, 2005, 15:48: Hahaha In regards to the Mr and Mrs Smith thing...Oh dear, I have never laughed more in my entire life...it was portrayed as a rather shabby, rural place...super colorful, rather humid, sunny...The colombian police speaks mexican (Say what you will, whatever they speak in mexico is a totaly different language when compared to colombian spanish) and all you can see through the windows are palm trees and Bombs...Id say it looks more like haiti. I saw the movie here -as in Bogota- and everyone was just soooo pissed off "horrible film, did you see what they did to Bogota?" Albatross says on Jun 21, 2005, 03:37: Actually "Biche"... I wasn't attempting to create controversy at all, but to point out how ridiculous people like you sound when you refer to Americans as " our unitedstatesian brothers" or whine about how we "usurped" our name from Latin America. I assumed this was obvious... “Democracy - a pathetic belief in the collective wisdom of individual ignorance." - H.L. Mencken |

Colombiche says on Jun 21, 2005, 06:32: Albita querida You obviously didn't understand my sarcasm when writing the beaner peace and using the Unitedstatesian term (which was actually invented by one of the PBH posters as a joke). Most people got the sarcasm in my piece, as I can tell from many of the PM's I got, you were obviously not one of them as I can see. I guess you are one of those people that needs things spelt out A-B-C-D. My point on that thread was to make fun of people who preocupy themselves with such banal matters.
