Working In Columbia-Suggestions for Phone Service and Internet

I will be working in Columbia for 6 months and the job requires that I have access to Hi-speed internet and unlimited outbound international calling. Can anyone give me suggestions on how to optimally accomplish this? If I am going to be renting an apartment will there be further complications getting these services since I am not a resident of Columbia? I can´t imagine a non-resident having an easy time getting these services in the USA so I don´t expect to have an easy time getting them in Columbia. However, that being said, I was able to get these services in Argentina when I rented an apartment for 6 months, but I figured that was because their economy is in such bad shape they were willing to get money anyway they could. This doesn´t seem to be the case in Columbia. I truly appreciate help in this matter.

Shouldn't be that hard You won't have too much trouble getting these services in CO if you're willing to pay some deposits. I use cable broadband and a VOIP phone service with a US number for my international calling. Works great and if you're from the US it gives people there a local contact number so they don't have to rack up international LD calling you.

Phone and Internet access is easy to get, many PSTN provider offering a packet all incl. even you are not a resident and if you get any problems just get a friend with a Cedula who can make a contract for you.
By the Way in what city are you moving to ?

What Companies? Mr. Hollywood,
Thank you for the response. I need to get started very quicky so if you could recommend specific services that would be very helpful. I don´t mind paying the deposits (since the company I work for will be paying them!:). Maybe you can even direct me to their websites and I can contact them from there. Again thank you very much.

Phone and Internet Tom,
I will be moving to Medellin on December 1st and hope to have my connections ready and accessable by Monday December 6th. However this is asking a lot because I also need to find an apartment in these 5 days as well. But I am working on that from Buenos Aires as we speak....
Can you recommend a specific PSTN that is better than others? Thanks.

Email? Antonio, post an email where I can reach you and I'll send you info about the VOIP system and what I know about other services here. (I'm in Bogota, not Medellin, but they're pretty much universal).

One thing that might be a good short-term solution for you is that I know Bell-South is offering wireless internet over their cell network. You could get a phone and internet set up in on day that way. I don't think it's super fast, though, and probably not a great long-term solution.

No problem I know some privat people which are renting apartments out and also some good real estate broker, the first days you will need a lot of time to see some units because of the area and the price.

Really???? Tell me some more please Hi:

I have a research/statistics consulting business that is heavily dependent on telephone activity so that when my customers call me in the US using my US phone number (so that they don't have to incur any costs), I need to have my phone to ring in Cartagena in real time. I've read on this site a bit about the VOIP system but I don't fully understand what is involved. Verizon in NY wants to charge me $1.20/min to receive and make calls which is pretty expensive and they can't even guarentee that I can use their system in Colombia.

If anyone can give me a general overview of this system, it would be really appreciated.

Thanks a lot,

Jeff

Jeff and others --For Voip, check out Vonage.com It will explain how you can call back and forth to the US and Canada for just $25 a month.

Also:
--What does PSTN stand for?

--And how much is a broadband connection in Colombia?? And is it cable or DSL?

--And as far as Voip goes, you need to bring the device down with you or have someone bring or mail it down. Vonage, for instance, will not mail it down there.
