Work in Medellin

Hey guys

You have talked me into going to Medellin. I am looking at language schools like EFAIT and NuevaLengua (Leaning towards EFAIT). Now I have another question for you.

What type of work can someone not fluent in Spanish get? I am talking about work other than teaching English. I am going to look into teaching English but I want to know if there are other types of part time jobs available. I am just looking for a little money on the side to pay for food, transport, cheap dates ;) etc. I am hoping to take out a student loan for the language school, so granted that comes through I shouldn't have to worry about paying that until I get home.

Are there any Language exchange programs, where I exchange English lessons for Spanish lessons for free housing? They have those in other places, im not sure about Colombia.

Thanks
Keith

Keith,
First of all, good luck finding a Colombiana who's interested in cheap dates. That said, I hear you man, it's a good goal. I know you said you weren't interested teaching Spanish, but if you're wanting to make some cash while you look for something else (sometimes it take a little time to make those links, you know?) you should ask for Hugo at USA English. It's a business just around the corner form Parque Periodista, it's on the same side of the street as the park...I want to say on Maracaibo...as you're heading towards the train from the park. Anyways, he's a really nice guy - Colombian born, New Orelans raised - and he can set you up with classes where you're actually prohibited from speaking Spanish while you teach them. The pay was nothing special, but it was something at least.

Sell minutos...

The "lovemedellin website" is a piece of crap made by some moron who has only been to Medellin once...you'd be better off reading the Lonely Planet advice from a guy who never even came here!

I went to study at EAFIT last year. I would thoroughly recommend them. The class was small (myself and a canadian girl) and the teachers were both really good.

work wise....i can't really help you out - I was staying in Robledo with my wives parents. I know there are a lot of debt consolidation companies from the US which have offices in Medellin. the pay is really good as far as Colombia goes - up to 2.5 million pesos a month. Thats enough to live well. I can't remember any names of the places though. I'd need to get back to you on that.

oh....i never heard of any english in exchange for accommodation before. If you go to EAFIT though, more than likely you'll get signed up with a language partner. man, i'd love to be a single man in Medellin.

bam bam...if teaching at eafit interests you, i highly recommend the llano grande campus. they asked me to teach there but i had a bar/restaurant close by (FLOT) and was teaching english to the children of campesinos for free and found it far more rewarding than joining the status quo and providing more services to the rich.

you'll find llano grande to be heaven on earth and find your stay to be more culturally rewarding than the campus in medellin. that is, unless your youth addicts you to the night life and club scene. any questions e me at dwmte7 at yahoo.com
