here's another venue where mr. uribe can shine. commute the sentences of these people in jail for rediculously long sentences for non violent crimes. the 'have not's' in colombia are up against horrible odds. staying alive, staying healthy and not getting in trouble. it's made worse, because they can't buy the court, pay the bribes or have recourse to defense attorneys.

how many men and women in colombia's jails are there for stupid non violent crimes.

common mr. uribe....these are colombia's children...they weren't born rich like you and the pther politicians...give these folks another chance. boost your ratings across colombia...not just amongst the 'haves'

Yes, helping to heal their wounds assists the FARC, but in a battle armies allow the injured to be recovered from the battlefield to have their wounds mended. To place a person in jail for mending wounds does not sounds ethically correct.

However, this shows an interesting aspect of Colombian culture. Beauty pageants or queens are so interwoven into society that you see them at every level. During the San Pedro festivals in various parts of the country, practically every town/city, department, organization, company or school has a queen. There are queens for grade schools, the local branch of a bank,etc. Heck, even an old ladies garden club will pick a queen. I must admit that I'd never heard of them having one in a prison, but it doesn't surprise me. If it brings these women a few days of joy and distraction, then good for them.

Wow, that is very sad. I tend to find this sort of thing very hard to understand. People smiling and trying to enjoy under those circumstances seems so unnatural to me, but then again i'm pretty nihilistic. If I were that doctor (and I have to say she did not seem/ sound like a real doctor), or some girl put in jail for years for something rather minor, I'd be in bed 24/7 or on my zillioneth suicide attempt.

Well of course, every doctor has to do the hippocratic oath and cannot be put in jail for offering assistance. However, there is a fine line between treating sick people and supplying medicines, prescriptions etc. without reporting this to the authorities. In little Colombia everyone knows who is a guerrilla/ paraco and who isn't. I am just playing devil's advocate here.

Well, I don't think any of them were proclaiming their innocence, but it shouldn't be surprising that most of the ladies cooped up in that jail got a raw deal. Some of the worst criminals in Colombia are NOT in jail, they're holding office or running a company, lol! ;)

The sad part is that many of these ladies would have been better off working as a prepaga/postpaga, at least that's legal, and seeing this video makes me understand better why THAT is so common down there as some of those sentences do seem pretty stiff for the crime committed.

and don't think for one minute that those gals there aren't abused by prison staff...remember, these are the gals that can't pay their way...not bribes, not the court, not barristers, nothing. their bodies are the only fall back they have. pity.

really brother, i know we're on the same side. the abuse of women is heartbreaking...especially the defenseless. sure, there are some mean, criminal ladies in there, but the whole energy that came through was of the problems of the disenfranchised. si o no?
