Witchcraft and exorcism in Colombia

Today my wife received an email from her sister and she was telling me about it. It seems that her mother had a priest over to the house in Monteria yesterday to perform an exorcism. I asked her, WTF? Was the devil in the house? So then she tells me this story about her brother and this chick he is involved with. They have a baby but my mother-in-law is convinced that it is not his based on the history of the woman and her family. Also, it seems that her brother's fertility is questionable which makes it even less likely the child is his. This pissed off the woman who apparently enlisted her grandmother, a bruja, to put a hex on my mother-in-law. After this, they found different items in the patio of the house and adjoining the house including a crucifix with my mother-in-law's hair wrapped around it and a dead black cat with a piece of her clothing wrapped around it. There were also some other items that they found, little packages of things that had some kind of black magic significance. After this, they called in the Big Dog, to try to rectify the situation by casting out the evil spirits. My mother-in-law had been complaining about mysterious chest pains where she felt as though she could not breathe but these have abated after the exorcism. The thing that cracks me up about all of this is that to my wife and her familiy, all of this is perfectly normal. Nothing unusual at all about having a spell put on you and having an exorcism. What does everyone else think? Do you have similar stories? Come on, Kat, I know you're a Black Magic Woman.

Only one small data point A Colombian friend warned me not to leave my first-floor bedroom window open, even though it's got sturdy bars on it. His reason? Someone might drop some kind of black magic thingamabob into my room.

He was serious.

Oh yeah I could tell you some good ones, they all are to do with my paisa ex and her family. Brujas all of them!

The thing that makes me laugh is the lucky aerosol sprays with the indio charms that will help you win the lottery. They also used the bathroom as a sort of shrine with all sorts of little amulets, statues and candles burning 24/7, it was hotter than hell in that toilet. It was all perfectly normal for them too.

One of my ex brother-in-laws was bewitched by his wife, that is the only explanation any of us could come up with because he is a well-built handsome guy and she is a little short fat ugly woman. Apparently mother-in-law hit upon the correct candle or aerosol or something because she disappeared.

It isn't just Colombians though, a good friend of mune from the Bronx is a santaria priest. We also have a lot of pellars (white witches) in our family, I even have an adder stone, or milpreve that belonged to my great grandmother. The most I get involved with is herbal and stone magic.

Oh I always where one sock inside out just in case the little people try to take me. Don't think that works for the FARC though.

Shortly after we moved into our hose I found some chicken feathers and blood on my doorstep surrounded with salt. Nothing happened to me, but the blood is a bitch to remove, so I put a doormat over it.

FREAKY STUFF! Utopia,
I have heard of stories like this before. I have a friend from Holland who's girlfriend is originally from Surinam.
When he visited Surinam with her to meet her family he witnessed a similar ceremony to this, some kind of exorcism to ward of the evil.
This kind of freaked him out a bit, especially as there is a market stall there that deals specifically in selling ingredients and instruments used specifically for this kind of black magic.

He did also witness some strange things with what I can only describe as witch doctors. People with serious health problems (I'm not sure what) being cured by the hands of this witch doctor in a very strange ceremony.

From the impression I got from my friend this was very common practice there.

STICK TO THE PATH, DON'T STRAY ONTO THE MOOR!!!!!

I heard a couple scary ones too My first boyfriends mother supose to had receive a spell from this man who wanted to marry her and take her 3 houses. That was like 5 years ago but they found out about it just a couple years ago.

She said she used to have terrible nightmares and she used to smell sulphur in her room so she thought it was her husbands soul (i know it sounds weird, it does to me since I feel I am pretty skeptical but thats their story). Then they started hearing things in the house but all of them thought it was the soul of the dead father. Well it so it wasnt, it was caused by the spell of this man who was trying to marry her. They went to a witch and she described them the man's appearance and told them what the man was doing to her. She also described how they met, and told him during that afternoon he used his skill of "praying" in the black sense (i have no idea what that means but I guess it is spelling a person just by saying words or something like it), and thats how he got her from the beginning.
Another thing is that this priest came to her house without knowing her to tell her he felt somebody was going to damage her really bad. So basically with the help of the priest and the witch (strange combination) she got out of that.
1 year ago one of her clients who works at la Fiscalia (the evil guy does as well) called her and asked If she was alright? So she said yes, why? So the women told her this guy was talking at work about all of the money he spent on witchery on her and how it didnt work, and how he was very mad at that.
The thing is that the lady, my first bfs mom, isnt crazy or nothing else, she is the sweetest and loveliest person on earth, but it seems all of this is true... at least for them.

And another persons story was that this girl who was very succesful at my university all of the sudden started to smell reallly really bad, and then started to lose lots of weight and to get really sick from her stomach, she lost many pounds and she did look terrible ( and she wasnt anorexic from what i know). I was told that she went once to bogota to visit her family and one friend of the family told her mother that she was going to die soon at least someone helped her. So they took her to a witch and this lady gave her a white egg and a glass (vaso) , and did some prayings and then told her to move the egg close to her body from the feet to the forehead, and then when the girl looked at the egg it was black all of the sudden, then she broke the egg and from it came a worm and some dirt... suposedly it was dirt from a grave and someone at the university gave her that on a dark drink ( like a coke or coffee).

Now in my family there were never beliefs of that kind, or of any kind ... so this arent my stories, and they were told to me from people i have considered very honest and not liars... so I dont know... I just have decided to think there are somethings I cant explain and I wont even try... and that I will ignore them or I will be living scared of somebody doing crazy weird things to me

i wrote on this not too long upon arriving at pbh...i don't think many people took notice so i won't regurgitate...suffice to say that i have personal experience on this subject...since that night in la casa de mi abuela en el zuldemayda 10 years ago i know there are things out there that science cannot (and will not) explain to me....this is a subject that is never given a chance as it's instantly ridiculed....i keep a very open mind on this...plus i've also seen a ufo in armenia...not kidding either

adrimm says on Jul 2, 2005, 13:57:

Sustos and espantos My mother's side of the family heartily believe in ghosts. They were afraid to let me sleep in a particular room becuase it was aparently haunted. Somehow I suprisingly (accoording to them) survived my week in the house with nary a problem. I guess I seemed skeptical of the story becuase I was dragged off to the office of relative (a lawyer) who, sitting behind his immense desk, in his office with a view calmly proceeded to tell me his experiences with the ghost.

It was just so funny to see the man, in his suit and fancy schmancy office being perfectly earnest about hauntings, where a lawyer here at home would have quietly been encouraged to "seek help".

I'm not anti-spirit, my own experiences with close deaths have shown me this, but to see the "supernatural" aspects to openly embraced, and blamed for sooooo much is rather amusing.

Did anyone hear the story of a family who was forced to extortion, and allowing the daughter and wife to be raped by a guy claiming to be a demon? He was convincing enough that they stayed under his thumb till a relative in another city caught wind and went to the police.

maleorange says on Jul 2, 2005, 14:16:

i would like to say When black magic comes up everyone is interested in it and many people including myself believe that it works. Please rememebr that if some thing so negative works then powerful healing loving magic works. There is a book called healing prays by larry dossy. It shows scientifically how the healing energy works on people animals and plants. We have so much magical power to do good. Even some thing like a smile can lift someone out of feeling life is bad. A few words with love said (we all know how an aggresive look is powerful and bad words said are powerful) are powerful in helping someone. If you know someone that has a hard life close your eyes and see them surrounded by love. All someone in the black arts does is use there imagination in the wrong way (never do that as there is a spiritual pay back and some thing abd will eventually happen to you) I am basically saying with love we have power to change our lives and other peoples

UC, forgive me here for being naive, but what is this spell that Kat has on everyone??

quindioman says on Jul 3, 2005, 11:18:

uc i don't know why this is so common and prevalent amongst not only Colombians but some latin american countries.
My mum is bang into all of this (hebal baths and stuff like that).
I was very sceptical of all this at the beginning but even nowadays I still get the occassional night where i'm being "disturbed".
i was fine and for 18 years of my life never experienced these problems but since that particular night where me and my cousin were haunted i started experiencing these worrying symptons..... coincidence? I'd like to think so but there are too many for this to be a big coincidence....no....i am for the best part convinced that there are malignant spirits (and if there are malignant spirits then surely there must be good spirits without one you can't have the other)
I don't have to go very far to get someone to back me up....my fiancee has always being banging on about the fact that her ex has put a nasty spell on her....she sounds extremely convincing and has been told by reliable sources that in fact there is some "work" that was put on her...in fact she had an "accident" in December where she "accidentally" shot herself above the left knee with a 9mm from point blank range....apparently she was meant to have killed herself...she didn't die...but she spent most of december in hospital and lost a lot of blood as well as that banging backside she had.
UC it is very weird all this talk of witchcraft (particularly if one has been bought up in a western society) but it is very normal in colombia...perhaps....just perhaps these guys might be talking truth

kat1 (Moderator) says on Jul 3, 2005, 12:05:

Don't worry guys...even though i am a firm believer that this stuff works i wouldn't practise this stuff if you promised me a million pounds.
My conscience stops me doing a lot of things i would jump at doing.

For gods sake Kerry, you are neither male or I suspect orange. You talk enough absurdity to offend even a half wit. Before you post your garbage, do us a favour, please, run it through the spell checker and what is more important the thesaurus.

In all of your past aliases you have and continue to use the incorrect gender and grammar in certain words in your every post.

This is to my certain knowledge your fifth alias and I am sure it will not be your last. You have given up the right to any semblance of maleness and you will remain what you were born, female. You are also incidentally, a disgrace to every female in the UK.

My stated facts, although interesting at times, are generally, in this case also very revelant.
