Will NEVER step foot into Mangos in Medellin again nor recommend it to my customers.

I went to Mangos in Medellin last night with a few guests who wanted to go. I hadn't been there in a year or longer to I thought, "what the heck?".

First, I remember it being expensive but, wow, have they gotten out of control. After a cover of about 15 mil each (I think) and 3 pat-down searches and 2 metal detectors we paid a whopping 150 mil (roughly $80 US) for a bottle of Medellin Rum.

Secondly, and my biggest complaint, after raping us on the drinks we learned that they have a new taxi system in place charging an extra fee. Only the taxi cabs displaying a "Mangos" sticker on the windshield were allowed to come in a pick-up guests leaving. The taxis then charge a 2 mil "security fee" in addition to the fare. It is obvious that Mangos wants a cut of the taxi fare as well.

For those in the know, is that exactly legal? I thought there were government controls on taxi fares? I know it's only 2 mil but it's the principle. What bullshit, huh?

I am sure it won't hurt them in the slightest but I will never ever recommend that place to customers at my hostel. The Saturday crowd wasn't even that good last night.

We have a Mangos here in Miami located in South Beach and they also are CROOKS. I don't know why everyplace named Mangos are run by Crooks but that seems to be the case. Watch you Wallet and Change on the Table if you visit Mangos in South Beach! Mango's SB Waitresses take your $20 or $50 Bill and disappear thinking you meant they should keep the change for a $4 beer. Caveat Emptor

That sure sounds NOT like my type of place!

Recently, I got angry in Cali at the Palmetto mall when I visited another of the 8 bars there. We were out with a big party and they chose that place. It was not my regular one. They had been shorting me on the lime juice for my beer! I poured the lime of 3 mugs together and got 1 shot! Yes, I was one angry Gringo! If I am paying alot for my beer, then don't short me on my lime juice!

tomtom33 why do you think the fee is a good idea if it is breaking regulations on the taxi fees set by the government? I call taxis all the time for people to make sure that are getting a taxi driver that has been recorded and confirmed. This IS a good idea to do this for your customers for many reasons, but only for the 2 mil? It's nickel and diming, and probably illegal.

Colombia has some of the cheapest taxis in the world, but there is a safety problem when flagging one down.

Don’t you pay extra when calling a taxi in Bogota, or taking one from a mall? These are safe taxis and I have no problem paying a little extra knowing I will reach my destination safely.

The one taxi ride I find expensive though, is the fixed rate they have from or to the airport in Medellin.

And whenever I order a drink I ask how much it is first just in case they try to charge me an outrageous gringo price. That way I have the option of leaving before they even bring the drink.

I went to a club once and ordered a pitcher of beer. I think there was more water than beer in the pitcher.

The last time I went to mangos I spent 300.000 pesos. Not worth it.

Thanks for the warning about Mangos. It sounds a lot like some of the more popular clubs in Cartagena, charging US prices in Colombia. Sorry, but however you slice it, that sucks. One of the things that drew me to colombia was the relative low prices. With the dollar dropping and the gouging on the rise, things are changing for the worse. Hate to see it happen even if it is inevitable.

===================================================================

Tasco--you were simply one of the lucky that didn't have a problem at Mangos! How many times you been there? I last stepped foot in there in 2000, in fact that's the last time I spent a dime in a south beach Bar. And many times I would carry(like most miami colombians) a small flask of Rum and only order a Diet coke on Ice from the Bar and throw in my own Liquor. And I never payed a Cover in Mangos, I used to grab a beer at the Mexican taco place next door to mangos and use the Common entrance way behind mangos entrance where they charged the Cover. I bypassed that area and was never caught but I suppose they closed that loophole. LOL I know the angles and the back door alley employee exits to access these SB Clubs! I would never go to Mangos to meet a Colombiana or any Latina for that matter, too much $$$. Better to go to any one of the several Colombian Tabernas in south Miami, Kendall or on Calle 8. No $$$$ Cover Charge, the people are real not the plastic turisty kind you find on south beach and best of all, the Beer is cheap and the women Hot. I have an allergy to Cover charges and will do about anything to avoid or bypass them.I've had a lot of practice over the past few decades. Worst thing, besides the overpriced bars&clubs in SBeach, is the Notorious Beach Towing Company who hang around waiting for your parking meter to expire by one minute then hook your car up and off it goes to the Impound 'til you pay $130 to reclaim it. They are vultures! They put a Tire Boot on a buddy's truck one night and he unlocked his Oxy-Act Tank and Cutting torch in his truck toolbox and Cut the Boot off-left it laying in 2 pieces by the Meter! LOL

Mango's is where the "tourists" go.

Like in NYC, all the scumbags go to Scores (a strip club) because of the Howard Sterns hype on his lost radio show. Even though Mango's is not a strip place. Same thing. Good marketing to Gringo's.

Mango's caters to dumb ass Americans and lets not forget the dumb ass Euro's who want the feeling the of safety Americana in a foreign country. Yes even the Euro's want Americana safety! But sorry pals...you can't have it! Live in fear. Us Americans don't really care for you anyway! Ha!

The only girls at Gringo's are either hookers or those that think they can meet someone to take them to a better life.

Why does this have to be debated over and over?

==================================================================

Black Monday----Good Post, couldn't agree more! I could never understand why Americans travel 1000s of miles out of country then hit the tourist areas like the Zona Rosa where everyone practically is speaking English. Why even leave the USA? I'll agree with Teja - generally, Colombian guys can't fist fight too good. I saw fights any given night I was out - which was 2 or 3 times per week for 4 months in Villavo. My favorite part of a typical fight is when a dude takes his shoe or belt off and tries to beat his opponent with said shoe or belt. Freaking hilarious. The cops are cool too. They break stuff up, put up with a lot of shit, but I can't remember anybody ever going to jail.

Mangos is a place I know I'll never enter. I have been to the Mangos in SoBe, Miami. March, 1992. I remember that because it was my one college spring break, and we saw Merrell Streep (sp?) there. I was also stunned at paying $5.00 a beer at the time. I went to one of the Mangos in New Orleans a year ago. It was during the day, and 2 beers and 2 slices of pizza was $19.00.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That was so long ago, believe he had to anty up some damage $$ for the Boot plus the

parking fine but if I recall correctly,he denied cutting it off. This was before the Video cameras recording everything, today he would really get nailed. At any rate, it gave him great satisfaction to see that Boot clatter to to the street in two pieces. LOL

What more do you want? No Cover charge, free parking, Hot Chicks, cheap Beer and Good Music. Why would you go some Tourist trap like Mangos when there are good places to be had at 1/2 the Price of mangos with better results here in Miami! And with much less competition to boot,,,Mangos may look good to you because you don't know of some of the better places,,,And better they remain that way,,unknown to the tourists

and, then...... the fight started:
________________________

I rear-ended a car this morning. So, there we were alongside the road
and slowly the other driver got out of his car. You know how sometimes
you just get soooo stressed and little things just seem funny? Yeah,
well I couldn't believe it.... he was a DWARF!!!

He stormed over to my car, looked up at me, and shouted, "I AM NOT
HAPPY!!!"

So, I looked down at him and said, "Well, then which one are you?"

And then the fight started.....

When I got home last night, my wife demanded that I take her someplace
expensive....so, I took her to a gas station.....

And then the fight started....

goin_south says on Jul 14, 2008, 00:07:

After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for Social
Security. The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver's license
to verify my age. I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my
wallet at home. I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would
have to go home and come back later.

The woman said, "Unbutton your shirt".

So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair. She said, "That
silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me" and she processed my
Social Security application.

When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the
Social Security office.

She said, "You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten
disability, too!"

And then the fight started.....

My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion, and I
kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a
nearby table.

My wife asked, "Do you know her?"

"Yes," I sighed, "She's my old girlfriend. I understand she took to
drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear she
hasn't been sober since."

"My God!" says my wife, "Who would think a person could go on
celebrating that long?"

And then the fight started.....

Tasco, prices in top end clubs in Colombia are comparable to their counterparts in London. Prices nowadays are not that different. Ill give you an example, last January I went partying to a very nice club in Bogota, ordered a Jack D's and coke and they charged me 30K pesos... which is roughly 8 pounds. Any elaborate cocktail in Mahiki or a drink in Whisky Mist in London is around 11 pounds.

why don't we take this war to the front. that being the world, where genocide, murder, rape and all other heinious crimes are rampant. fighting with each other over this nonsense just makes each and every one of us unsure as to who they want on their back in the trenches.

there IS a war out there. lets use our talent and energy to stand tall against it. on each others side, not at each other's throats. please.

good men are good men...regardless their patria. they should stand together, not against one another.

Papi - don't you realize that the taxis aren't making sh$$ from the 2 mil? It's Mangos. I was just pointing out that they are nickel and diming and their prices are out of control. I own a business and I can appreciate them trying to make a buck, believe me. But go too far and you get negative pub. This is how it works. I went around charging double the price for rooms and nickel and diming my guests then you might see a post on here about my place and rightfully so.

You see, we posts these kinds of things on boards like this to alert other people who might be thinking about going there. Some people, I know, come on here only to start fights, troll, etc. All they can say is, if you don't like _____ then leave ______country. This really doesn't add a lot to the conversation IMHO.

spigrimace says on Jul 14, 2008, 05:46:

I agree its a load of BS for the charge but Ill throw a curveball at ya....I wonder if EXITO, CARREFOUR, the malls and the like also make money on the taxis because if you look close enough, you have to be from a certain taxi company (such as Tax Individual in Exito Laureles) to enter the premises. Maybe that company pays a royalty to be an exclusive taxi service provider. If that is the case, maybe Mangoes figures they give so much business to taxis, they deserve their share as well. Not like Mangoes doesnt have enough already. But to counter, in the states we get hit with valet parking (which Im surprised mangos doesnt force on its clients), coat check, tips for the coat check girl and valet as well. Also who knows if Mangoes owns their building or rents it, but even if they own it, they should try and make back the opportunity cost of what it would rent for. I know a lot of business owners in Colombia that own the building their business is in and make less monthly than what it would rent for. The size of mangoes may cost $60 millones a month to rent. (youd be surprised how expensive the rent of bodegas are - especially closer to the mayorista like mangoes is) In months like July 2008 when you may only have 8 total fridays/saturdays, you must do a lot of business in those 8 days to make that back. And what if there was a ley seca weekend in that month...ouch!
