Hello all,
Maybe going to Bogota soon. My previous journeys were on various US airlines (American, Continental etc) but this time I'll have few days and a certain Avianca flight has a very convenient arrival time.
Well, I'm being a bit paranoid about giving my money to any entity outside of my cozy gringo world. Basically I have two fears:
1. If I book through the web (say, the Delta website or maybe Expedia), is it likely that Avianca is going to screw up so that when I show up at the airport they don't have my reservation or don't have a seat for me?
2. Am I likely to experience a huge delay with Avianca (like, say, half a day or more)?
Anyone who's flown Avianca a lot-- I'd appreciate your input. Thanks!

jorgegdiaz says on Jan 29, 2008, 13:06: A friend of mine had same luck with Quantas flying Sidney - LA. They bumped him to first class due to overbooking and he got mad because his travel mate didn`t. They both had a 16 hrs flight in first class :) Man with hole in pocket feel cocky all day. |

Monpirri says on Jan 29, 2008, 13:22: Yep, every airlline at one time or another have problems. Avianca has a new managment. Annette Taddeo for US Congress 2008 |

Mr. Hollywood says on Jan 29, 2008, 13:25: I haven't flown Avianca in a while but, in my experience, the worst managed airlines are actually the US majors. I've never figured out why the US government keeps "saving" US airlines when they go bankrupt. How about a little survival of the fittest and only the strong survive?

Monpirri says on Jan 29, 2008, 13:39: Thank you for letting me know about the date. I flew in December 2007 Annette Taddeo for US Congress 2008 |

Monpirri says on Jan 29, 2008, 14:19: Oops, you ignored the other part of the quote, "I ask that before posting or saying said remark that it’s going to affect the future of a Colombia product, to stop and take a deep breath, buy DirectTV or any other Colombian TV news or media, or fly again to Colombia and double check a prior “awful" experience." Gator says on Jan 29, 2008, 14:26: Avianca is much improved with the new ownership-if you still worry try COPA but you WILL stop/change in Panama City, Panama. "Brevior Sltare Cum Deformibus Mulieribus Est Vita!" . |

Monpirri says on Jan 29, 2008, 16:37: Terry2, I guess you are also right because the call it something like first class, I do not know how I got there? Annette Taddeo for US Congress 2008 |

tomtom33 says on Jan 29, 2008, 16:51: Thanks. It was in 2005 that Avianca screwed me and never fixed the problem.

droble77 says on Jan 29, 2008, 17:53: Haven't had any major problems or delays with Avianca so far. One time, I got a free upgrade to 1st class because they accidentally assigned two people to the same seat although how that can happen with a computerized system is beyond me, lol! :-)

Monpirri says on Jan 29, 2008, 18:54: Tomtom33, I'm really sorry you had a bad experience with Avianca in 2005, anyway if you read the story above it says Avianca had financial problems and Efromovich bought it in 2004. Annette Taddeo for US Congress 2008 |

tomtom33 says on Jan 30, 2008, 01:48: Mon, I fully realize that no company can keep everyone happy all the time. However, my experience with Avianca was so similar to my experience with other Colombian companies. I can only do the Colombian mind fuck for so long. And, if they are so fucked up in the areas of ticketing and customer relations, how can they keep their planes in the air?

eywed says on Jan 30, 2008, 03:21: I have only used Avianca for one trip to Colombia but they were great. Between the Wife , Mother in law and Father in law and Step daughter They have used Avianca alot. Never a delayed flight, any lost luggage or anything . Ok onee thing, When my Daughter was only 2 she flew down to Colombia with the wife and did not have to pay so they did not give he a meal. My wife asked for one but the flight whore said no to her. People were refusing their meals and the flight Whore could not give a little girl a meal unreal. I dont blame Avianca for that. it was no big deal either. Ay Hombe!!!!! |

eywed says on Jan 30, 2008, 03:25: And yes it was out of Miami and we like that airport. I'm ducking as I know the $hit will hit the fan after I say that. Ay Hombe!!!!! |

tomtom33 says on Jan 30, 2008, 03:56: Actually, I don't mind MIA either. The eye candy is amazing, and there is enough good stuff to eat.

jorgegdiaz says on Jan 30, 2008, 05:46: I`d rather travel Avianca than Continental, Airtran, America West, Aerolineas Argentinas, or Air France. Man with hole in pocket feel cocky all day. |

nine inch nails says on Jan 30, 2008, 08:13: No worse than AA. In fact they left the MIA gate extremely early when I went down last year so I had to go out the next day and pay $100 change fee. Flight scheduled to depart at 3PM but pushed back from the gate at 2:15P airborne at 2:45P!!!!!!! First this has ever happened to me but would fly them again now knowing this. Flight staff very professional and courteous. get down, get down |
|
tomtom33 says on Jan 30, 2008, 08:31: There is something about leaving early in Colombia. Once I was flying Avianca CTG-MIA and they were calling for me to get to the gate nearly 1 1/2 hours before scheduled take off. I got to the gate, passed security, boarded the plane, and we left nearly an hour early.

|
Papi de Alejo says on Jan 30, 2008, 09:22: I've traveled quit a few times on COPA ant they seem to leave early as well. I guess in the post-9/11 era, flights are closed at a definitive point before scheduled departure and if everyone is on board why sit around for the departure time?
|
|
Man Tequila says on Jan 30, 2008, 09:30: Avianca offers a lot of flights, but then seems to cancel a high percentage of them. When you go an hour earlier, it is because it is a different flight, with a different flight number. I have a suspicion that a lot of flights are canceled because of low sales. I was supposed to leave MDE at 2:00 this afternoon with Aires. When I called yesterday to confirm, they told me that the flight was now at 4:20. If you look at Aires schedule to CTG, they run flights all day long. There are maybe 5 or 6 departures scheduled per day.

Mr. Hollywood says on Jan 30, 2008, 10:46: I was at a tiny airport in Panama not long ago with my family. We got there WAY early and checked in, then were about to wander outside to go get some food. There was actually a baseball game going on on the runway. Luckily, one of the airport hangers-on told us we should stick around. About 15 minutes later, the baseball game was broken up by the plane landing, several people were unloaded and we were herded on and took off, a full hour and 15 minutes early. I pity the fools who showed up only an hour "early" to find out the plane was gone for the day.
