Lisa's right, it's a rather larde rodent, closely related with guy (that is eaten, especially in the south of Colombia. in Cauca and Nariño), I don't know it's English name either. In Cali there was a street in the south, in Pance, called "El Callejon de las Chuchas".

Fugdis, yes, watch out for spiders, frogs, lizards and snakes. I'd wear longsleeved and gardening gloves. Or, sit on the patio and drink tea while my men do the job....

Seriously though...you might Seriously though...good chance you could encounter scorpions around rotting wood. There also might be venemous centipedes. I don´t know if they are down there but they are common higher up. I have them living in my roof and occaisionaly they drop into the living space. I haven´t heard of any dangerous spiders. There are wasps that are worse than scorpions that sting tarantulas paralizing them and carry them off to their lair to feed their young but again I think they´re at higher elevations such as Kilometer 18. Also not likely any venemous snakes in the city and no chance at all of rare poison arrow frogs. The chucha is a possum and is the most frequently encountered mammal in the area.

Scorpions yes I found one in one of the bathrooms in Cali. It was a small one, about 3 cm. long but the first one I've seen. There are spiders, plenty of them, but none that are lethal (as far as I know). Just remember that in a jungle like that everything is either poisonous, irritating, gives you a rash or makes you itch.
