It can be far from any "real" experience, can be superficial, can be "cold".
You can hate the people living there.

But it is cool and clean, you have a nice breeze blowing almost constantly, it is green (to be a city), air is clearer.
It is silent and private.

It is not a tourist place where to look for real Colombia, but it is a damn nice place to live.

I always read here that Poblado is now over run with Gringos, yet every time i go there (which admittedly isn't too often) I never see any gringos.

robi666 says on Mar 22, 2008, 12:24:

Durito, I see your point.
If you go to Lleras on Saturday night, you'll happen to see a lot of gringos. How many of them are not tourists and live in Medellin, or better, live in El Poblado? Not many for sure.
Also, there is some place where they use to meet. As an example, there is a corriente place restaurant en la 9 near El Parque where they use to meet for lunch.
Outside there, you can rarely spot one in Oviedo or El Tesoro.

But, I would say not the 0.01% of the population in El Poblado is gringos.

"I am a citizen of the most beautiful nation on earth. A nation whose laws are harsh yet simple, a nation that never cheats, which is immense and without borders, where life is lived in the present."

durito says on Mar 22, 2008, 12:30:

Sure. Given the amount of hostels near Lleras these days I'm sure there's plenty out in the bars and clubs. Though, it kind of surprises me that backpackers can afford to go to these places.

But, like you and Pepe said, there's very few living there, which certainly kills the assertion made by some people that gringos are contributing to rising real estate prices.

Medellin Traveler says on Mar 22, 2008, 12:34:

I didn't see any gringos out on the streets over my first three trips, not including backpackers in Parque Lleras. On my fourth I met two guys walking into Hotel Portabon, on business.

The backpackers may hang out close to Parque Lleras, but I've never seen them step one foot into any of the establishments.

I'm on the streets most of the day and no sight of a gringo invasion.

I have a lot of family that lives there and all their places are awesome. I also have family that lives in some of the newest buildings in Los Rosales in Bogota, but I much prefer the ones in Medellin. I wouldn't guess that Poblado would be a great tourist destination, but I'm not really on the tourist vibe when I go there. I am usually hanging out with family and eating a lot.

I've never seen any Colombians, beside paracos/mafioso, show off because they have wealth. But, you can usually tell when someone has money by the way they carry themselves.

Medellin Traveler says on Mar 22, 2008, 14:36:

In this specific case, yes. The whole crew was criminal.

El Jefe acknowledged my presence after seeing me around town for a few days. None of the gang talked to me, much less made eye contact.

After about the fourth day, El Jefe acknowledges my presence by asking me how I was doing in perfect English. Afterwards, the gang was allowed to acknowledge my presence and look in my general direction.

I guess I won him over after they watched me drink like RAAAY. They got a kick out of how much I was drinking at the bar, shots, beers, and mixed drinks.

There were five bodyguards with El Jefe at all times, along with girls, girls, girls.

The bartender shook her head everytime I ordered another drink.

Then.... El Jefe paid for my drinks.

Afterwards, I met my paisa friends after work and we went out for dinner and drinks in Parque Lleras and I tried to convince them to join me in "dine and dash" after dinner :O) They thought I was loco, but got a kick out of it.

in north dallas, if your car and watch do not equate to atleast $75,000 combined, chances are that you are out of your league. if your home/condo is not in excess of $350,000 AND located in the right neighborhood (school district), you are out of your league. and that's just the wanna be's....

I know what you're talking about.

I also have a place in Santa Marta. That's a different life and I love to change: two months there of different life and I am back to Medellin to rest.

I was living in Cartagena on my sailboat when I first got to Medellin some years ago. I did not know what to expect. I was looking for a place to live in Cartagena or Santa Marta, but I was never satisfied with what I was looking.
When I got here, I immediately sensed that this would become one of the best cities that I have ever seen. It was a kind of feeling more than rational thought. It's the people, more than the place.

So I decided to visit a property sold by Conavi (Bancolombia now) and bought the apartment in 10 minutes. My 315 sqm penthouse went for around 90k dollars and I spent 10k to renew it... would be around 320k to buy it now. Good move...

When the mob decides to call in a favor, factory exec Antonio Badalamenti (Alberto Sordi) finds himself in the unlikely role of Mafia assassin in this Golden Globe-nominated Italian crime drama that deftly walks the line between comedy and tragedy. Tapped by a Sicilian don to perform a hit in New York, the inexperienced Antonio must somehow carry out his mission, all the while keeping his criminal connections hidden from his unsuspecting family.

I work in a business (film production) that is easily applied in Colombia, so I'm quite excited about the whole prospect. Of course I wish I had been hip to the place sooner though. Even 5 years ago would have been an enormous difference over today's prices.

This forum is a great source of inspiration. Wade through all the usual crap and there's some incredible info here from some very knowledgeable and smart gringos. It's a joy to read the real scoop from people who've lost the rose coloured glasses and tell it like it is.

Thanks again.

robi666 says on Mar 22, 2008, 19:10:

"Enrique: what percentage of the Medellin population lives in el Poblado, and it is a large or small sector of the city?"

Have him get in touch with me. We can switch jobs for the winter months in Chicago :O)

Cheers Terry says, "I work in a business (film production) that is easily applied in Colombia, so I'm quite excited about the whole prospect"

Interesting. Maybe, we can work on a project together. I'm into film producion as well.

tejasmarcos says, "chicago is a great city for the states. it would be one of my picks as well if i was from medellin."

Agree. Chicago is a great city, and I see so many similarities between Medellin and Chicago that if I moved to Medellin it would be like living in a sister city, which I am still working on here in chi-town.

robi666 says, "Yes I did, although I cannot remember if it is good or not. Wish I could see it with you, I miss the old Italian comedies..."

Where do you get your fix for foreign films in Medellin? Cable?

Discussion during dinner and the Bulls game last night was about Medellin, my friends are very interested in what's happening in my favorite Colombian city, as well as a project that I may develop into a feature film for Bernie Mac and Cedric the Entertainer, it's a comedy that I pitched last year to several producers. I've been too busy with things Colombia for a better part of the last 12 months... but they like my pitch and have asked me to develop it further I was the only NMG at the table..... it was a great time on their dime :O)

Why people like to talk bad about Poblado?

Because they can`t live there, they are jealous.

gringoloid says on Mar 23, 2008, 19:53:

Lisa Zee.................why do we have so many threads on Poblado and where you should live in Medellin? We don't talk like this in Bogota.

Lisa Zee says on Mar 23, 2008, 21:00:

Because nobody has been picking on a specific area of Bogota.... yet.

El Poblado is bigger than you can imagine, is not just parque lleras.

Robi666, not exactly, but I know the area, very beautiful pics.

ColombianoGringo says on Mar 23, 2008, 21:05:

Yeah. It seems like they keep pushing "Poblado" farther out.

Lisa Zee says on Mar 23, 2008, 21:15:

I don`t think there is any land to be build any more, some areas are overbuild.
When I was growing up, El Poblado was the best area of Medellin, and still is, but before there were big, huge houses, some areas still have them. El Poblado has many different sections.
I read a post about it here.

Lisa Zee says on Mar 23, 2008, 21:30:

Oh yeah, Have you ever been to "El Club Campestre" I wonder what is the value of that gorgeous place?. I went to many "qinceaneras, and weddings, and I loved to go swimming there, I can only get to see it from my apartment, but have not been inside there in years.

Lisa Zee says on Mar 23, 2008, 21:37:

Pobrecitas!

ColombianoGringo says on Mar 23, 2008, 21:58:

I went there a few times as a kid with my cousins. We mainly went there to swim as well.

robi666 says on Mar 24, 2008, 02:10:

El Club Campestre golf court is what you see in the first two pictures, Lisa, I thought you got it. Aren't we neighbour?

http://www.clubcampestre.com.co/

To be using it permanently, you have to pay 20 millions of pesos. That's a fee that will make you an owner of it. I don't know which % of ownership is associated with the fee. the ownership will be transmitted to your children.
Else, you pay a monthly fee, like 700,000. That's for you and your family.
Then a small fee for each activity.

Technically, El Club Campestre can never be sold. That's why if you possess an apartment in front of it, you'll have one of the best view of Medellin forever.

You get into the ownership of the Campestre in Llanogrande as well.

I believe Pepe's piece of land, and land in general, can be sold at around 1,000,000 pesos per m2, if it was not developed.
Go figure the price of El Campestre. What is it? 15 ha? 150,000 m2.
Gringo prices for sure... :)

robi666,

Depends on the area but 1,000,000 pesos per m2 is to little, I would double that and more, several times the above I expect.

morphus says on Mar 24, 2008, 06:49:

Ctg Bound says on Mar 24, 2008, 06:59:

PepeA,

The mansion wouldn't be worth anything.

The last information in regards to El Poblado is over a year out of date, lots were generally going for about 1.8 million a square meter then, lower down, not up on the mountain.

morphus says on Mar 24, 2008, 07:58:

Ha Ha...Beverly Hills! If it was'nt for the cheap booze and prepagos, Poblado would be as exciting as Scranton, Pennsylvania.

robi666 says on Mar 24, 2008, 11:23:

Poblado is not exciting at all, Morphus.

After all, you know that Parque Lleras is just a small zone that happens to be in El Poblado but has nothing to do with the comuna itself. Which is a residential neighborhood. Silent, reserved, clean. No party on the streets, not even on new years eve.

Ctg is right, the mansion would not be worth anything. And yes, I was too conservative in my evaluation.

pedro says on Mar 24, 2008, 13:39:

When I first came to live in El Poblado, I thought it was a bit sterile. I wanted something with more flavour.

I had a change of circumstances and ended up living in a decent estrato 4 street in Manga, Cartagena. After six months of this, I'm ready to make a run back to the conjunto cerrado.

Sometimes you get tired of the noise pollution coming from the street. Because of the lack of trust of strangers in Colombia, opening up the front of your house and having passers by looking in the window can be a problem. A more exaggerated problem for a gringo, depending on what stuff you have in the house.

You don't want to make too many enemies in that kind of environment, given the easy availability of weapons in Colombia and the fact that anyone could potentially just walk up on the street and shoot into your house.

I can completely sympathise with the desire to insulate a little bit from society. You can then choose to engage with it on your own terms.

Having said that, I like Laureles better than Poblado. It's greener, flatter and more walkable. I like the vibe of people in Laureles too... just my personal choice.

I know families around Colombia that provide cellphone minutes or whatever from out their living room window. I'm used to a non-Colombian level of privacy and could never see myself doing that.

¡save pow wow!

robi666 says on Mar 24, 2008, 14:09:

robi666 says on Mar 25, 2008, 07:34:

No, Marcos, it is just that some people judge without knowing him.

For example, just a week ago, a well known PBHer from the coast was telling me and Ray that Morphus is evidently a ped.
Ray and me were shaking heads, asking how could he be so sure.

Morphus always asks for cedula to his victims, pardon, his girlfriends. He is straight for me.

Tejasmarcos, its just pure speculation. I always said the girls were 18 and over. Somehow that got misconstrued with being a pedo. Maybe they are just breaking my balls or maybe its just wishful thinking. They would love to see me go down but its not happening. I don't break any laws. I can't get in trouble in Colombia anyway. My 18 year old girls would be devastated :)

robi666 says on Mar 26, 2008, 16:21:
