Why must you buy the whole bottle?

Whats up with many of these places selling you the entire bottle of liquor? I tried to do some hopping from lily pad to lily pad and could not find many places to sell me a shot.
The places I found that had what I wanted, I would have to buy the whole damn bottle or nothing. After owning a bar here in the states I tried to show some of these people how much money they would make if they shot it out rather than force you into an entire bottle.
They would not budge.
Out in llano grande this one place had my favorite. It sells back home wholesale $96.00.
He had one bottle on the shelf for $375.00 us. He would not shoot that bottle out. So I asked him, how many bottles he has sold? He said only one. I said its good shit ya know? If you shoot it out you'll get more people buying it and then you will sell more! I had my funny lil hunny with me so I said..Ya know, I'll buy probably 7 or 8 shots now.
NADA!
Help me out with the cultural or the thinking here and give me some arguments why you gots to buy the whole klondike?

Catfish...........I can understand why you have not been to many bottle places in the U.S.
Thay are typically classy establishments and are quite selective who they allow in.

They are also more expensive. Doormen would take one look at your sorry ass, and point you in the direction of the farthest away beer and shot joint.

In New York, L.A. and Miami they have become quite plentiful. There seems to be a sort of status thing with the people that sit with a $200 bottle of Smirnoff or a $250 bottle of Johnny Walker Black.

Call me a wuss, but, if I'm going to get a bottle of anything, it must be Moet or occasionaly D.P.

When you get down here next week I'll spring for a bottle of Pilsen for you, that liquor s*t gives me the wee wees............

A Colombian Taberna in west Miami sells A'diente by the bottle and I cringe when I see it for this reason; it encourages overindulgence. I've watched people at the Table with that Full bottle sitting in front of them and they know they can't take it home(strict open container law here in florida) so the closer it gets to closing time, the Shots start coming fast and furious as they "Coño, Paid $85 for that damn bottle and they aren't leaving a drop behind". If they were paying $6 per shot they would, IMO, be more conscious of the Number of Shots they are throwing down. True, they would be making maybe $30-$40 per bottle more. Our Streets in Miami would be much safer also, no small thing. I've wtached these guys who have the bottle at the table practically float out the Door they are so Gassed up. IMO, the practice, for this reason alone, should be outlawed. These guys should think ahead and simply bring in a few empty coke bottles and transfer what they don't drink into the coke bottles and carry it out their Lady's
purse or coat sleeve.

FR-Dui Laws are really enforced here in the Miami Area so many won't take the chance. In the old days I would, after a good night of drinking, put the seat back in my Van and listen to the music for a few hours. Now if the Miami Cops catch you with the keys in the ignition doing this, you are in a world of trouble and they nail you for intent, that you may drive. Now, if by rare chance I am caught with having more drinks then will allow me to drive safely, I simply disable my car by pulling off the distributor wire and call my Emergency road service and have them load my car onto the Car hauler and deliver me and the car to my condo. The Tow truck drivers let you ride with them so no problem. I don't have $10,000 to give the attorneys to get me out of a DUI predictament. Mostly, I just don't drink much anymore. Here in Cartagena most bars will sell you shots if you want. I think its because they get more tourists and therefore they have to be more flexible.

But the Catfish35 experience is prevelant in so many things here. The mind set is so closed to new ways of doing business or just being flexible to accomodate a customer.

Example, just the other day I went to this place in Castillogrande that sells really tasty, large chocolate chip cookies among other things. I bought a couple. Their ice cream looked good so I asked for some vanilla to go as that's my lady's favorite.

The lady reached for a cone and I explained to her that I was alone and driving and couldn't hold the cone and safely drive at the same time.

I asked if she could put it in one of the cheap plastic cups right next to the cones? She said the cups were only for maltedas which cost 4 mil pesos and the cono is only 1.5. I asked if she could make an exception this time as I was a repeat customer. She said she couldn't.

I said "ok. How about this as a compromise. I'll pay the 4 mil pesos for the cup and you give me the same amount of ice cream as you would on a cono. That way you make an extra 2.5 mil profit and my lady gets some ice cream." Can you believe she wouldn't do it!

I felt like Jack Nicholson in Five Easy Pieces ordering a chicken salad sandwich just so he could get a couple slices of toast. Take the chicken, the lettuce, tomato and the mayo and stick it up your ****!!!!

That deal with insisting to sell the whole bottle seems a bit strange, but some of the justifications make a little sense.

Some have said they see that in the U.S. Not in Pennsylvania, unless things have changed a lot since I left. Although there was an ongoing movement to abolish the state stores, so maybe has changed by now.

But, buy a bottle in a bar? License GONE, at least closed for a while. That was probably as bad as selling after hours, to visibly intoxicated, or to minors.

I think private clubs were only allowed to stay open an hour later, and by law, non-member guests were not allowed to spend any money, only members. It was for many years only clubs could serve on Sundays. I doubt that you can buy a bottle, even in a club, legally.

Six packs beer – bar only

I have not been in Vegas for a very long time, but the booze was free if you were playing, and food was very inexpensive. But I never visited any fancy clubs.

Pennsylvania Liquor Control Boad was always notoriously tight-assed about booze.

At one time PLCB agents would hide across the border in Maryland to catch people buying cheaper hooch and cigarettes and crossing back into the Commonwealth. They would radio ahead, with vehicle description and license numbers, to state troopers waiting across the state-line.

You could actually lose your car, in addition to stiff fines.

The PLCB was the largest purchaser of alcoholic beverages in the World, with their monopoly of liquor stores, and even the bars had to buy there.

750 ml bottle of rum (5th) has about 25, 1 ounce shots in it. A bottle of Caldas in a typical bar in Colombia (night club) is 70,000 pesos. Some places more, some places less. For a bar to make more money by selling by the shot, rather than by the bottle - without taking labor into account - would be by charging more than 2.800 cop per strict 1 oz shot.

I think the owners of bars and nightclubs know what they are doing; selling liqour by the bottle. It is calculated. And for the consumer in Colombia, it is pretty cool to be able to make your own drink, have Coke and jugo served gratis by the pitcher. Ice every half hour. A plate of fruit, etc. And if you don't finish the bottle, you can take it home.
