Why is Colombia's Sea So Murky Brown?

Almost everywhere along Colombia's (mainland - I'm not talking about the islands) Caribbean coast seems to have rather murky brown waters - or certainly the entire section of the coast I've visited from Cartagena East to La Guajira (with the notable exception of Park Tayrona, which is quite beautiful).

Why? It's sediments from rivers I assume? Have I been unlucky with the time of the year I've visited and the water clarity?

I just went to Dibulla (near Riohacha). That place would be amazing - coconut palms overhanging empty white sand beaches - only problem is that the sea is BROWN. I didn't want to swim there.

Further West - Sucre / Cordoba / Covenas / Capurgana - is the sea as murky there?

A look at the run off after a heavy rainstorm is muddy in Bogota and other cities. The concept of preventing soil erosion is foreign to Colombians. Gardners loosen the soil around plants so it looks better, never mind that this frees the soil to run downhill to the sea.

Why would you dare bathe in Buenaventura?!

jaramillo says on Apr 15, 2008, 10:34:

Few of the beaches are of coral origin, especially south of Santa Marta.. It's not the coal production:they were the same 40 years ago.
I also think the water has more organic mater because of the rivers (especially the Magdalena).

Sam Salmon says on Apr 15, 2008, 11:14:

It has nothing to do with coal or coral-it's because the sea is so shallow, some of the Pacific side is the same there are large shelves of sand that extend for miles offshore.

Once you get away from the muddy sandy shoreline the blue starts to show.

No, I'm not and that's not the point.

Now how would you like it if someone posted pics of 9-11 'bomberos' covered in dust and ashes and made fun of them?

I always said B/B is not a pretty place, and if you are not form Colombia, you should not go there. It is hard to explain the misery and poor people, this is a very neglected area of Colombia, and it is one if not the biggest port, it is a shame, bu we Colombians are very sensitive about anything shown or said about our dear country.

I guess like the saying says "if you don`t have any thing nice to say, don`t say anything at all"

NY Bombero, this is why you like Medellin and you want to live there.

Simon, tranquilo, he does nor know we don`t like anybody showing the world the places that are no so nice. I think the beaches of Long Beach here in L.A, look like the ones in B.B.!!!! but I won`t take pics.

Maybe NY Bombero would kindly remove them!

The sea is murky because of the alluvial sediment and limestone.
If you want a transparent sea, you have to look for it in drier areas with granite or coral rocks. Like, as an example, northern caribbean. In Italy, the best sea is in Sardinia, granite and dry land.

The sea can get murky in Tayrona too, at least once a year, in the time of stronger rain.

The Magdalena river influences a great extent of territory, from Cartagena to Cienaga and almost Santa Marta. It is a big river, and you have to sail far from its estuary to see some blue water.
The sea gets better in Santa Marta. Rodadero has a blue sea.

About the low Guajira, again there are some big rivers from the Sierra Nevada to take in count: Rio Mendiuacha, Guachaca, Buritaca, Palomino (I may forget some).
The predominant current in the seaside proximity is from South to North.
Also, the sea is usually very wavy, and that contribute to the murky aspect. But, it is not dirty there.

The sea gets better in the high Guajira, a dry land.

So just in case you all don`t know: ..... the last pic or B.B. (I think it is nice, like a painting) that is not really a beach, it is low tide, the tide goes out like 200 meters.

I used to go to Juanchaco, since I was 5 years old `till I came to live here, we had a house there, actually Ladrilleros, so we had to go to B.B. And if you came back with low tide, it was not pretty, and difficult to get out of the boat. Oh the memories!!!!

It is nice to prove what I was telling in my comment.
Look at the post above.
The sea at Irotama, on the way to Barranquilla, still looks murk. The more you get North-East from there, the more the sea looks nice. Of course, better in calm water, like in bahia Cintho.
