Why do colombians think that yawning means you are hungry?

yea I was at some Colombians home last year in Cali, I yawned and they asked me, are you hungry? I said no not really why. All the sudden they are up running to the kitchen getting me a coke and some snacks. I couldnt figure out what all the fuss was about.

Twenty-five years ago some cop pulled me over and searched my trunk for no reason. Do you know why?" Standard reply: "Looking for Jimmy Hoffa would be my guess".....or, if they were rude: "Looking to see if there is an occupant with some sort of intelligence ...." ....jajaja...not really, but i wish i had sometimes.....=)

Man Tequila got it right. Colombia is not the U.S. When I was a student in the Universidad de Antioquia, a public school, I mingled with students from all socio-economic backgrounds. I soon found out that many were hungry. I would casually invite a friend for a cup of coffee and an empanada, as if we were just killing time, not to offend him or her, but I knew damn well the guy had had no food that day. Fatigue in Colombia often comes from malnutrition.

I don't know the rest but usually in my house is because when somebody yawn they follow with the sentence " tengo un hambre" that is why I associated yawning with hunger and tireness too.

MT mantequila has a good point. i do the same when in Colombia. You'd be surprised how many people there are actually hungry but they dont say anything about it. I know alot of them cant afford breakfast,and some live on one meal a day.
Anytime Im in Colombia and i see someone that looks hungry i offer food, no one on this planet should go hungry.Hunger is unacceptable.

Scotty, Col _81 I've seen people Yawn after a Big Meal with consistency but never when they are hungry. After a Buddy of mine ate of one his Mother's huge Italian Spaghetti Dinners, like clockwork, in 15-20 minutes he would start Yawning and he was asleep within 10 minutes! Guarandamnteed! Thought it had to do with one's blood/energy being diverted to the digestive process but they(scientists) say no conclusive evidence to why a person yawns.

Just because a lot of colombians are hungry and that they also yawn, does not mean hunger causes yawning! I've never yawned due to hunger it always happens when I'm sleepy. Now hunger or lack of food causes drowsiness and drowsiness causes yawning, but many other things cause drowsiness too. So hunger doesn't directly cause yawning (again, not scientific here).

I corroborate the yawning = tired = must be hungry explanation, because my Colombian fiance always says things like, "I'm so tired, I need to eat some meat / sugar." Food to him is more closely associated with energy than it is to me (and most Americans, I think, who tend to associate increased energy with lots of sleep or chemical substances more readily than they do with food). Consequently, if you're tired (yawning), it must be because you need to eat something (you are hungry).
