They chose Colombia because if you want to see the Caribbean, you go to Cuba or the Dominican Republic,
if you want to see the Andes, you go to Ecuador or Bolivia,
if you want to see the Amazon jungle, you go to Brasil,
if you want to see the Pacific ocean, you go to Chile or Panama,
if you want to see the Pre-Columbian cultures, you go to Peru or Mexico.
if you want to see snow-capped peaks, you go to Argentina,
if you want to see vast plains (llanos), you go to Venezuela...

but if you want to see all of these things in just one country...then your destination is definitely COLOMBIA!!!

After backpacking through most of latin america several years ago i was pretty sure I wanted to move down here. Colombia wasn't really on the radar screen, even though I'd loved my trip here. Ultimately I decided instead of heading straight for Argentina (my planned new home) I'd travel again to the places I liked the most on my first trip. Colombia was first up (basically a geographic necessity/ though I knew I 'd have a hard time leaving) -- but, a couple weeks in medellin was it for me. I have not plans to leave.

Rural Colombia reminded me of Rural U.S. 50 years ago. Yep,, except the cars are newer.

And of course cell phones. Pictured is a RARE dual holder.

Secondly, everything in Rural Colombia needs repair or replacement. My construction abilities are,,, well,, lacking in the U.S. but OUTSTANDING in Colombia.

Reasons I came:
1. Bad rep in news. No place can be that bad (esp after talking to people who traveled and lived down here, I knew there was much more than we were hearing)

2. Juanes

3. A talked about plethora of ESL teaching jobs

4. diversity of climates and such

5. friendliness of the people

Why I am still here, ah, thats a whole other post that I should write after a few more months/years, IF I am still here.

Miamimike is right,, plus, I'd say the 15k USD is on the lower side. I've heard as high as 50K.

One reason you might never have heard of it before is because It's illegal.

Me? I'd tell my best friend I was in love and when divorced I'd try to get as much sympathy as possible,, maybe a few dating references.

I've been told several stories about individuals who have "thrown their life away" on some hot young chick in Asia. Yep,, divorced the wife, which means bye, bye half the assets and then, after spending a bunch of money on their new wife, watch her leave.

This has been going on for years,, but not necessarily "for cash",, nope,, for love and it is a consideration when you're getting married.
