Why are we, Colombians, so freakin' neat?

It’s so true that we are so neat. We really need to take showers all day, brush our teeth after every single snack, use after-shave-lotions, deodorants, powder... We can’t stand smelly people around... And I’m a man! ...Ah, and women... Let’s not go there!!! Isn’t that being a little extremist? Are we cleaning freaks? Why are we like that? :-/

definately a colombian thing and one realises this once one has travelled abroad.
In England these people get up and go...the most some would do is brush their teeth. Colombians shower (at least once a day) and we are very hygienic...brush teeth at least twice a day....here in Europe many people shower but I don't think they do it on a daily basis...over here in Europe is all about the image...that is what is on the oustide.....as long as you have the latest garments they don't care whether they are "physically clean".
Colombian are the anthisesis of this....we HAVE to be CLEAN...i love that Outkast song that goes so fresh so clean.....that's us Colombians....so fresh, so clean

From experience I've also noticed that Colombians are very clean people but Venezuelans are by far the cleanest people in the world. It freaks me out. All the Venezuelans I know brush their teeth at least 6 times a day and shower a minimum of 3 times a day. When I was there they looked at me weird when I told them that I only take a shower once a day.

British people have the nastiest oral hygiene. It could be because toothpaste there is so damn expensive. I don’t know but they should really start brushing more often because some of them have plaque on their teeth that has turned brown and green. I'm gagging as I type this.

French come in second place for nasitiest oral hygiene.

BlondeJamesBond, the stereotype with bad teeth in Britain is actually or should I say was deserved. Flouride in the water and the post war shortages had a lot to do with it. As a child I remember we couldn't afford toothpaste so we brushed our teeth with salt or soot! However I note that in general British teeth look quite normal nowadays, perhaps not overly bleached and perfectly straight as in the US but natural.

People from the UK who come on holiday in the US may give the cleanliness brigade a bit of ammo, as a general rule Brits will sweat like pigs when on holiday in Orlando, no ammount of deoderant will keep the body odours down; but at home it isn't normal to sweat all that much. Hot weather confounds us Brits.

The worst BO I have encountered was some huge Russians who came to Florida with the Moscow Circus, followed closely by a former American co-worker who refuses to use deoderant because it is bad for your health.

Agree I think that the whole Colombian neat & hygiene thing (which I agree with) ties onto the emphasis on "appearances" that is including the visual and non-visual end of things. Ie fashionable clothes, manicures, nice scent etc. etc.

When I was a growing up I remember weekend camping trips where my mother would haul out a huge pail, set up an enclosure and have a "bath" on Saturday. Keep in mind she'd had one before leaving on Friday afternoon and would beeline to a bath upon returning home on Sunday afternoon. Same thing when my aunt came.

One of my earliest memories of camping in fact is sitting in the lake, in a "poso" framed by large stones or water-logged logs, having my head shampood by my mother while my father sat in the boat a few meters away chuckling.

I like to keep clean, and I certainly place high value on good hygiene - but I can be a little flexible for a 2-night camping trip (especially if it is spring or fall, and in the summer a dip in the lake works for me).

Awaken...
Dear Vicshere,

Well, yeah, we have to admit it. We live in a third-world country. There have no littering policies at all. People –especially older generations- weren’t educated that way; but, fortunately, now –thanks to improved school curriculums- we have environmental subjects at high school, and students are being told not to throw their garbage out of their car’s window. Personally, I also hope the government focuses on developing the proper laws to control and punish littering.

But, mostly, the purpose of my post was to talk about the personal hygiene of Colombian people. In general, since we are kids we are told to have a very clean appearance (by this I don’t mean to wear expensive clothes, but very clean at least), to shave everyday, to polish our shoes, not to smell to sweat, etc., kind of an army regime (ha!)... And, off course, there are exceptions to the rules. I just wanted to read other people’s opinions on this matter since I’ve seen that this is not how the rest of the world is.

English isn’t my first language, and correct me if I’m wrong, but I’ve heard everybody using the term “neat” when referring to this topic. That’s why I used it. So, please, I don’t want anybody to be confused between “Personal Hygiene” and “National Legislation”. Anyway, thank you everybody for your posts. Controversy is great. Cheers!

BlondeJamesBond and Kat1, show me where I said the british smell.... I don't believe I ever wrote that. They smell quite nice actually. I just said that most have bad teeth and that is probably because toothpaste in the UK is rather expensive compared to the rest of the world.

BlondeJamesBond, I assure you that i brushed my teeth every day twice a day despite the high price of toothpaste. Even if it were to cost £60 I would still use it because my pearly whites are my best asset and I do my best to take care of them and my gums.

Stereotypes exist for a reason and we all know what people say about the british and their teeth. I said "MOST" not "ALL" so I don't see that as generalizing.

I dont think colombians are overly clean and to be honest i find it a rather ridiculous statement, if you go to small towns in boyaca and cundinamarca youll bump into people who are outside their houses doing the shopping and all that who -clearly- havent bothered with taking a shower. Yes the tube in london stinks in the summer, so do buses during rush hours but then again same thing happens in buses here in bogota...I think I blame the strong smells in london on curry...seriously, the more curry the stronger the smell, food and excretions are directly related. Toothpaste is not expensive at all, go to boots or superdrug and you can always get like 2 boxes of colgate for like 3 pounds!!!
Sure some people rather shower in before bed in the evening than in the morning, and yes europeans enjoy baths rather than showers but i dont think that makes much of a difference.
I dont think being neat and clean is part of colombian culture, there are very clean and neat people everywhere. This is a very silly thread.
Ps: Brits and Spanish people do have horrible teeth...and so do americans, and so do colombians when they cant afford proper dental care...*rolls eyes*

BritannicoX replies Sylvie - and a fine set of choppers you have, unfortunately refering to "MOST" instead of "ALL" is still generalising! In your defence perhaps the green-toothed 'Brit' you ran into was Kerry/Maleorange/Londonmale, which I imagine would be enough to damage your impression of us permanently. ;-)

Kernow - I'm guessing in the heat of places like Orlando we Brits also turn the obligatory lobster red, which when contrasted with our yellow crooked teeth, gives us a comforting rhubarb & custard appearance! :-D

I know British teeth do come in for ridicule, I think it's as funny as anyone, but on this thread we were coming across as cheapskates who wouldn't shell out for a tube of toothpaste, so I was forced to put on my BritannicoX hat and step in before it got out of hand.

When I said erlier that as a child we couln't afford tothpaste it wasn't that toothpaste was so expensive it was that we were so poor! Food was a priority I suppose, and we could always get new choppers back then on the NHS.

And when I was in London toothpaste was expensive compared to Montreal. It may not be expensive in other places in the UK but I assure you that in london I paid the equivalent of 6$CAN for a small tube of toothpaste. That is relatively expensive since toothpaste in Canada is usually no more than 3$ CAN. And in Montreal if you pay 3$ for toothpaste it is usually the fancy type with whitening formulas and sparkles.

I suppose nowadays the British are becoming just as vain as North Americans and more are sending their kids to the dentist and orthodontist. Here is an article from TIME magazine in 1945. Kind of funny if you ask me!

“Among 16-to-19-year-old Britishers who dare the dentist, 12% need a complete set of false teeth. Open spaces are as common in the West End as in Limehouse. Bad teeth plague cabinet members and ships' stokers alike. What is wrong with British teeth?
Britain's Nuffield Foundation, hoping to find out, last week gave $360,000 to four universities to look hard into the British mouth. Some suspected that part of the money had best be invested in propaganda against indifference: of the 14,000,000 Britons whose insurance entitles them to dental care, less than 7% apply for it.”

I also think that your British celeb exports such as Robbie Williams, Huhg Grant and the Beatles have not helped your case. hehehehe

Elmo, I would have to agree, at the fiesta here in Orlando there were some pretty ugly Colombianos, of course all the gringos I saw were ugly too including the old guy with the young Colombian hottie (by the way, people WERE staring). To be balanced though there were quite a few ugly ass Colombianas too, some with only a couple of teeth, others with big rolls of fat on display, so the stereotypical image of the Colombiana is busted. There are beautiful and ugly alike as well as those in the middle ground, there are those with nice figures and fat ones too (perhaps US food and habits).

Everybody had a good time though. That's the main thing, enjoying a good party! Colombians know how to do that for sure.

You will note I didn't post a photo of my ugly face!!!

Elmo.... re: "Why are colombianos so freaking ugly?" -- Like I said on another thread, I don't know what is happening, I didn't think colombiano men are lookers at all (you know usually colombianas have a reputation for being pretty but not the men), but I tell you, this weekend at the colombian festival in Toronto I saw a lot of very handsome colombianos. Taller, more muscular, a lot of green eyes, tan skins, I was very pleasantly surprised. Some of these guys were fresh off the boat so you can't even say that it is the Canadian food that made them grow tall. A lot of these guys could have easily have passed for Puerto Rican or Cubanos but they were wearing the flag so I know they were chibchombianos. I wonder if there is something in the tap water in colombia now adays and the new generation of muchachones is starting to look more promising. There weren't that many Lizandro Mesas (man he can sing but damn), more guys along the lines of Juanes. there were a lot of guys with that Jonh Leguizamo look (you know average colombian ni pa qui ni pa alla), but there was a fair number of male hotties to be fair.

As for the girls, I noticed most of the colombianas tend to be very slim, also the new generation is getting taller, to be fair, my honest opinion from a girl's POV was that most of these girls ranged from somewhat pretty to very pretty..of course, most of them were really making sure they capitalized on their assets, you know, the clothing, the makeup...etc.

Maybe colombian people are becoming very vane and taking a lot of care of themselves, I don't know.

They don't all shave or some of them shave only during swim season etc. I don't care whether a woman shaves or not. I'll go to Rio or up the Amazon. I'm a bush-eating koala.

I love to be ambushed. I've got special tools for getting through the bush.

A long and painful hair, you don't notice these things in the heat of the moment, it is only afterwards that it becomes painfully apparent.
