Is it just me or is anyone else getting fed up with all this BS of European politics, Isrealis, Arabs, Liberals and Conservatives?
Not directed at anyone in particular and I even have a great interest in these topics (at times) I just think its becoming more and more common here where it doesn't really belong. I come to PBH to talk about all things Colombia, not about some liberal election in France or who is right or wrong in Isreal.

quantum says on Jun 15, 2009, 07:57: Well, PBH has evolved into such an engaging forum, that its only logical that other topics will be discussed, but in the off topic category. For the reason it was created. So if u want to stay exclusively on the subject of Colombia, then stay away from off-topic......seems to me, that some of the more interesting and engaging debates are shifting over there....... quantum 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

RogueOne says on Jun 15, 2009, 09:08: It's an imbalanced world - and the forum is not likely to ever be likewise. Some posts seem to replect a narrow view of the country, continent, and world. I believe it's better that many here are so broad minded and have rich experiences to share.

Rocco81 says on Jun 15, 2009, 09:58: Well I don't mean to say that we should never have these discussions. I like hearing opinions from all over and from all types of people and in the course of these threads we'll end up covering a miriad of subjects anyways. I just get tired of the amounts of Euro and USA bashing. It seems that even though this is a Colombian forum there is more talk about USA and Europe and the politics of the two than there is about Colombia, which is why we are here anyways. Lcacique says on Jun 17, 2009, 13:50: There is too much to list, but here's a tiny sample of some of the things I like about the US. Most of my friends and family live in the US. As my friends and family are very important to me, it is nice having a large percentage of them living within the same borders. English is my first language and it happens to be the principal language spoken in the US. The second most popular language - at least where I live - would have to be Spanish. Thankfully, it is my second language; therefore, if it overtakes English I will still be very comfortable. In my neck of the woods, I love the abundance of fresh/local produce as well as award winning artisan cheeses, wines and beers. I appreciate the diversity of the geography of the US. I am thankful to live in an area where I can drive a very short distance and find myself in the high desert, coastal rainforest, on top of a tall mountain or alongside a lake or river. I like the fact that the diversity of our people - unlike some other countries - is extremely visible (at least in some communities). I love the fact that I can attend a Greek festival in the afternoon, stroll around a Japanese garden in order to work off the souvlaki, eat at a Moroccan restaurant later that night for dinner, catch a Cuban concert and finish the evening off in Chinatown with some strong drinks and appetizers. I enjoy witnessing how these cultures our partially preserved in a foreign environment; yet, I also enjoy seeing them intermingle. Variety, though it seems to be shrinking in some senses, is also a nice perk about living in the US. I like the community-based art house theaters that screen independent and foreign films. I love the diversity of American music. I love the kids that wrestle with the majors by releasing music out of their basements on their own labels. I love basketball. I like the fact that I am afforded certain rights that allow me to enjoy the aforementioned examples. I like the fact that the justice department functions fairly well and that when an agent of the department abuses his/her power they might actually receive a fitting punishment. I like the fact that - as of yet - the US is not a theocracy. I am thankful that citizens are allowed to protest even the most powerful of groups and/or individuals. And I am grateful that it is a very rare occasion that they are murdered or imprisoned for doing so. I like the fact that "Americans" are generally pretty charitable and philanthropic, coming to the aid of those in need. I would wish him no harm and never participate in any effort to silence him. We do try to resolve our differences at the ballot box and for the most part we respect the result. He won and now we live with the result until the next time.

Lcacique says on Jul 9, 2009, 00:56: aztec: I wouldn't say I won. The candidate I chose based on the time honored "lesser of two evils" technique won. I never claimed that Obama was the messiah and I am not the least bit surprised by the disappointment that I feel with respect to some of his decisions. I think it is rather ironic that one of your first comments that referenced me was one that begged the mods to delete my account. Maybe you never really meant it. Or, maybe you have grown. Or, maybe the 4th of July has you in some kind of patriotic mood. Whatever the reason, let it be known that I sincerely appreciate the fact that you would defend my rights and not seek to silence me. I find most of your politics and philosophy disagreeable, but - as a human being - I would never seek to silence you nor would I want to live in a world where you were not allowed to have different political/philosophical beliefs.
