Who was it that has been taking his bike out of the country every six months?

I remember a post but can't find it...who was the regular here that has been renewing his imported bike permit every 6 months at the border and every 3 months inbetween at DIAN?

Wanted to get an update from him....

Thanks!

Must you actually take the VEHICLE out of the country or SIMPLY go out yourself? I understand from previous posts/comments you didn't need to take the vehicle across the border, but just cross and return.

Alma said that the DIAN made him spend the night in Ecuador. There is a post recently asking for information about Ipiales and Pitalito. Just search for those two towns in the Google search.

Thanks guys for the comments so far.

Raay? Alma del Norte? Can you hit me with a PM to let me know how the continnued process is going and if there has been risk of denials?

Sloop - it is my understanding that YES, the bike must go because they actually update the permit and check the bike VIN and tags to all the numbers on the permit or something like that. Have never done it, but going on references I remember from previous posts.

You might want to PM Alma. He is on the road on the way back from Ecuador so I doubt he is checking the site frequently.

right...I'll do that then hope that Raay chimes in or shoots me one. If anyone else here is doing the same, let me know! Would like the updates over the next few months before I go back home over the holidays to bring one down myself!

Ok... I am sure that knowing the right people, I guess you could collect your paper and keep your motorbike inside your garage for a few days...
It is Colombia after all.

Yeah, I don't see why not, I would just hate to go all the way out to Ecuador and find out your contact has been transferred and the new guy won't do it. Besides, traveling cross-country here is beautiful - not exactly a negative to have to take a trip every 6 months!

My contact? I don't have one...

Who told you that your contact should be there on the border to Ecuador? What about a taxi trip to the Rionegro airport to collect your papers. Would it be better?

But yes, go on, ask Ray if he would take a trip to Venezuela again for those papers...

Anyway, your choice, of course.

Ecuador, Venezuela, whatever, wherever...

Will just have to take a look at exactly what is required for the papers. Maybe DIAN in the airport can sign them off every other pass issued as if it left the country? Who knows...but this would be the reason I posted, to find out.

At some point, isn't it worth simply buying the bike in Colombia? Is the one you want just not available?

Good point Gator - I just don't see the reason to do it DIShonestly when al it requires is a trip out of the country once a month. This is not a bad deal for someone who has a touring-style bike, and likes to travel and enjoy countryside trips on said bike!

ColombianoGringo - This exact bike is sold here, but for many factors I would rather import one. For one, the price to buy this bike in the US, out the door, with shipping to Medellin, would run in the range of $7800 USD...MAXIMUM! The COP cost here in Medellin is the USD equivalent of about $12,500.00 So there is reason one. Reason two is that if I ever go back to the US, it is easier to just ship the bike back than it is to sell a higher-valued bike down here.

Texx..............no need to worry about the bike being confiscated if you have the permit............they either give you the permit or they don't...........however, I would'nt spin around without it.

I had said in a previous post that there is no need to take the bike out of the country to get a new permit. That is only because I did it in Cucuta. Dian need to check the bike and take an imprint of the vin #. They do this in Cucuta. You can go into Venezuela by taxi, have your passport stamped in Venezuela, in and out and have it stamped again at the Colombian side. Then bring the bike over to the DIAN office.

How many times can you do it...??? I don't see any reason why it could not be done for years. The impression I got from the DIAN guy was, there was no way he would'nt issue the permit and he does so many cars and bikes every day, there is no way he would remember you coming back and forth. He is there solely to check the vehicle's vin and issue the permit. He does'nt give a crap if it's your first one or your 20th.

When I shipped the bike out to the US again they quoted me $500. Fine.

Then, when I got there, they added on a bit of this and a bit of that. Very frustating f**kers at the cargo shipper. It ended up costing about $1100 as you need to get a new crate made of Colombian wood which has to be checked for contraband. The crate that I brought it in on was no good.

I saw a lovely Africa Twin for sale on 33rd last week.........$10,000. The thing would be still worth $9000 after two years. I was only in town for a few days, so I don't know if it's still there. I'll be back next week and will check for you.

.........Its useless to argue with ignorance

Hey Raay! Thanks for the email and the post here!

I spent time reading your posts today, and looking at every word to gain what I could from it. This summary really gets to the point, and I appreciate it! To summarize, I am not to worried about getting it in or even driving it here. I am living her on a long term contract and visa, and the ONLY thing I worry about is getting it back in every 6 months...which is doesn't look like is an issue according to your experiences so far! The bike returning to the US will probably not happen anytime soon - I would probably wreck and destroy it or it will die of old age before I need to send it back. But worse case scenario, seems to be a bit more expensive to get it back then to bring it. Any suggestion on shippers? Worked with JJ's out of Miami before, and they have put the price at about $800. It is a smaller bike than yours, and you did it for $500?

Thanks for the idea on the other bike, but I have a desperate need for my new Kawasucki Versys! I have owned a lot of bikes, and am super-keen on this one after mounting the thing up at Kawasaki Poblado and reading the amazing reviews from all over Europe and the US. I have YET to find a negative thing about it, and it fits into what I believe to be a perfect bike to ride down here.

I think I've seen you maybe over at Champions? We'll have to hash out some bike stories when football comes back on, the first round is on me! Could use a good riding buddy on occasion also...

HI, back in town after getting muddy at the farm in Huila.

I've now gained temporary importation at all the border crossings and in Cartagena after importing by boat. Ipiales-Tulcan has to be my favourite; friendly, efficient and good-looking!

I delivered my peice of paper to DIAN and told them I was leaving, got stamped out at DAS, stamped in by the Ecuadorians. I rode my bike into Tulcan without importation permission and stayed the night. I crossed on a Sunday and the Aduana appeared closed anyway, but I couldn't be bothered with the hassle. It seems that Ecuadorian police at the border take weekends off because there was noone around, but they came out of the woodwork on the Monday. I got stamped out by emmigration, stamped in by DAS and then went to DIAN. As I had been given a further 202 days entry to the end of my visa, there was a bit of confusion about how long I should get for the bike, but we agreed on 3 months in the end.

I suppose I could have stayed in Ipiales whilst officially not in the country, but just didn't feel comfortable with the idea even though I have a cedula. Next time I might leave the bike in DIAN's parking area and take a taxi to Tulcan for the night. It wasn't really any hardship taking the bike, but I'm glad I did it on a Sunday when I had an excuse for not having Ecuadorian paperwork.
